It would appear it's back up now, albeit slow. Even the website went down for a good 3-4 minutes, though I imagine that's probably the backlash of all players trying to find out what went on :^) |

Well, if your business depends on your online service being available, and your hosting arrangements are not achieving the required level of availability, time to change the hosting arrangements!

I think you are probably correct.
Other sites unaffected, probably not a backbone/Telco issue, so finger of shame points at hosting provider. |

What if, I dunno, the issue is a few layers deeper? Internet isn't a straight tube, simple tracert at different times of the day shows that there can be 30 jumps easily to reach CCP's servers and this route can change in thousands of ways to avoid congested bits of network but there are also choke points which cannot be always avoided, usually between 2 networks at any level of service. If one chokes out operator A <-> B link, they will try to first go around it via provider C, D or E. Divertiong traffic to other routes which are already in use can cause choke points becoming overwhelmed with legit traffic and it wouldn't take long to knock them out as well in a coordinated attack. Usually providers manage to filter out malicious traffic in 10-30 minutes, but those are minutes which can cause disruptions towards a single data center which can hold from dozens to thousands of services affecting all of them.
TL;DR: internet is complicated and it cannot be fixed with a spanner or yelling at customer support. |

6) so many people angry that couldn't understand a joke even when thrown right up in their faces.
Enjoy the post, there are no seismography PHDs here.
The funny thing is that I told everybody about the Volcano and CCP locked my thread. But when CCP Fozzie spoke at ATXII live that he would return for the next match IF the volcano didn't kill everybody there, nobody did nothing.
CCP Fozzie, you're the man.

Deck Cadelanne, don't mind her / him / whatever. Let's just imagine we on the phone with the provider while the lava doesn't melt the lines / cables / routers / buildings |

Enough said.

Too many connection problems lately (in the UK). The last two weeks I've had dozens of socket-closeds, before that I'd maybe had two or three in a couple of years. Traceroutes are always the same: the problem is in London, the last hop before ccp's servers. |
