How long is the control tower scene supposed to run? I've just terminated Probe after 20 minutes of tower shooting (maybe you shouldn't have fitted lasers on that leviathan ;-) )
For serious: The scene plays out with multiple pans and angles (with ~1 fps - no surpise there) until it stops with a amarr battleship in the foreground (abaddon or armageddon - I'm bad at this) and the tower being pummeld in the lower left corner. No camera movement, just the ships shooting at the tower. After 20 minutes of disco lightshow, I quit probe, since apparently something is going wrong... |

20 minutes is definitely way, way too long.

The first time I ran it, the window with the scenes wasn't opened in the foreground. I finally got to it by manually opening it from the task bar, but I got some insane 15000fps for the first scene in the report. The scene loading felt also much slower than in the later runs (not caching, I restarted), and it crashed in the end.
The next time it ran without problems. I get rather bad framerates and a lot of stutter on hardware that easily runs the game itself, but I assume that the scenes are more demanding on purpose. |

The screensaver mode is awesome.
However, if you use two screens, the screensaver will stretch over both screens (good) but with the camera center being the middle, e.g. where the two screens intersect. This means that the focused ship will be "cut in half", making it less aesthetically pleasing.
Ability to set "center monitor" that is used as camera center (the same way the in-game left/right slider works except simpler) and then have the scene extend to all other monitors from there? Please?

While I really love this idea, I think it'll need alot of improvements. Running a 780 Ti, along with i7 4790k@4,2Ghz & Samsung SSD 850 Pro - and it took me ages to load up the first fleet. Other than that I'd love a screen detection. Since most users have at least two screens nowadays I'd recommend blacking out all the screens, but the main one, so you get reasonable benchmark results.
edit: I think you're also using better textures or slightly better shaders in Probe. Please give them to us. |

The long initialization the first time you run EVE Probe is a know issue.
This is due to the application downloading the needed resources for the scenes. You will find that subsequent runs will be much different.
We'll see what we can do about this, but we still wanted to get the EVE Probe out now and get feedback (and stats).

So I run EVE using DX9 because awhile back DX11 would crash and I never bothered switching back. I noticed that Probe studders quite a bit and has frame tearing. Neither happens when I play regular EVE. I presume Probe is running DX11.

Yes, EVE Probe runs DX11 if the machine supports it. It will fall back to DX9 if DX11 is not supported.
It also runs without V-Sync, so you will see tearing you wouldn't otherwise see.

:mac: - I guess at least 70-80% of EVE's players are Windows users. Since OSX has very horrible driver translation for NVidia, I'd just ignore them for the Probe Beta. |

It will not auto-update. For now, at least, we will simply post a new thread here if we have an update.
If you do run it as a screensaver, it will not send the performance results to us. Apart from alerting us of crashes, it is purely for your viewing pleasure.

As pleased as I am that a tool such as this exists to provide a way to measure and directly compare the performance of different cards under Eve, I don't find any of the tests to be a very good facsimile for its real loads. Ok it's a tool designed to allow the run and test of a checklist of effects; but as a benchmark approximating use, your fleet3 'large fleet' is barely a small gang; It does not tell me what I'd need to recommend; whether to render a fleet of 250 drakes, all firing (as an approximate minimum for a one-time regular fleet engagement). Let alone performance once 200 boots (archons - with drones, cyno and bridging in ~1000 subcapital support, firing, doomsdays - all at the same time).

Mine doesn't want to get past the "Preparing renderer" stage in a timely manner. The bar doesn't move and if I alt-f4 the process after 5-10 minutes and restart it, it'll get a little further each time. I've rebooted and there's nothing to suggest why it's slow. it has a screensaver built into it.. good job at reading and actually checking what you are installing before spam clicking next in the installer.
back to the actual program, i ran into a few problems.
1. the second scene never actually runs for me. first attempt it loaded to 65% sat there for 2 minutes crashed. second attempt it loaded to 95% sat there for 2 minutes showed a frigate then crashed. third time it went to 95% showed the frigate and skipped to the next scene. in the results it claimed it was successful all 3 times at 8fps, but it never actually ran the render.
2. the third scene once i finally got it to come up basically got stuck in an infinite loop and wouldn't stop playing even though in the results it claimed it finished with an average of 12fps. never was able to get to the 4th scene. |

I'll just launch some probes from my probe while trying out probe. Maybe because the ships were named after the titans out of Greek mythology. They're just re-using the names of them.

How about a re-enactment of B-R5RB to set the scale? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lvB2nRGMl2c Our focus for now is squarely on measuring the engine performance with various types of content - we know the really heavy fleet fights perform poorly even on powerful machines but for now we wouldn't necessarily get more useful data from such scenes.
Over time we'll add more scenes, with more specific tests, but also larger ones, throwing everything in there. We'll probably have scenes designed to bring any machine to its knees...

Also, IMO the news about the probe release should be posted on the news on the EVE online launcher or something so it gets a lot more exposure. |

How is the FPS Calculated?
I'm Running FRAPS during the tests, and I notice that the FPS as shown on screen is much higher then the results.
Also, when I overclocked my video card in 25Mhz increments. I actually see lower frames in some scenes and barely any increase in others.

The probe ran "fine". Results were easy.. Fleet 1: 3fps, all others: 1fps.
All I can say is that EVE seems to scale pretty nicely, since my everyday (small gang fight) EVE experience has fps steady-ish between 30-60.

I had a couple of PC's that both ran with results of between 4 and 15fps but eve runs fine for me on a day to day basis with quite a lot of the options set to high or medium so i think this is testing worst case scenarios...

That said, I usually get the biggest problems when undocking/warping to a station (especially when dualboxing). None of the scenes of the EVE Probe had a station in it. Maybe that is something worth looking into? :)

I then closed down a tool that creates multiple workspaces for windows called Dexpot (1.6.14 Build 2439 in this case), and ran it again. It seemed to complete fine.
Note: When I was running this, I had everything else running too (A linux VM, teamviewer, skype, teamspeak, an Eve client, SoundWire, EFT, about 10 chrome tabs, etc.) basically, just like I would actually play Eve.
I'll try it again next time I restart my PC, before everything is running.
Is running this multiple times helpful to you guys? Like I if I run it 10 times trying to narrow down what caused that crash or another program that may foul it up? Or would you rather us only run it once and then leave it?

cool, tried it;
overall impression is that the benchmark tool is a lot more choppy than actual game play. The other comment I have is that the fleet sizes in the benchmark would probably lean to the "small gang" sizes. The POS bash should be re-done with 50 sentry ishtars, for example. another suggestion: two full cyclone fleets firing missiles at each other. Those are the situations where in addition to server-side issues, graphics stress compounds the experience into "hide all brackets, gfx -> lowest". |

Hmm, what are those little semi-transparent things flying around ships in fleet fight scene? At first I thought those are pieces of ships ripped away by explosions but they seem to change direction of flight like drones or ships and they have trails. ALIENS???
Btw, for some reason tower scene makes my gtx780 crawl at mere 21 fps, is that overall amount of disco in that scene that stresses GPU so much? Other scenes have little jitter but decent fps ranging from 48 to 111.

I do love that you guys included a screensaver function, and it really looks sweet on multiple displays. It makes me really wish I could actually play eve that way.
I am definitely looking forward to the use of this to test new engine features, like the demo you guys did with nvidia showing off hardware tessellation. |

I let it run while cooking dinner and it finished the download. The scenes seemed more laggy than normal gameplay on a NV660. POS was the worst at 14FPS. Oh, and maybe add a borderless window mode? I think many people will be using this mode.
In case there's more people on a slow connection, the cache folder ended up at a size of 675MB for me. Maybe this helps in guesstimating download time. |

I thought it'd be somewhere in the program, but it just adds an option in the windows screensaver menu. |

The screensaver file saves to .../system32/Eve Probe.scr and should show up in the screensaver selectionscreen in Windows.

What I also request, like others;
Make it possible to run multiple instances somehow (I normally have 2 going).
Also, maybe add a setting to the Probe that says something like: "system setup for gameplay" but then better versed.
When gaming I have all kinds of stuff open on my PC;
- torrent stuff - video player - huge excel sheets - access database - power tools (synergy, taskmgr, etc) - browser with huge number of tabs (including massive flash stuff)
Maybe make it possible for us to add that to the log manually when that setting is used for the test.

Mostly the video player and flash would affect the performance since they could have processes running on your GPU. Other than the most obvious that Windows would start swapping because of low memory.
Also, edit is a great thing instead of having c-c-c-c-breakers =)

Having logserver running seems to have convinced the EVE client to behave. |

Because I installed it on a relativly fresh installed notebook with Windows 7 64Bit and after starting eve probe nothing happens. In the taskmanager I can see the process for a few seconds but then it justs closes again. If I start the screensaver I just get a black screen. It shouldn't need EVE installed, but we may have messed something up. We'll investigate this. On my home PC it runs without a problem

Are you sure you get those metrics right or are my eyes lying to me? These FPS numbers are averages for the scene as a whole - the stutter comes from irregular frame rate. We'll be working on smoothing these issues out as much as we can. Since the FPS are fluctuating wildly, I hope you are collecting more than just avg frame rate, i.e. number of frames rendered each second or render times + standard deviation. I mean, the eve client has always had dips in the fps when objects spawn or despawn on grid (or even just opening a context menu), but the stutter in Probe is even more severe.

Can we get a link to the new version? I tried re-downloading the version linked in the original post in this thread, but I suspect I just downloaded the same version I already had. I'm still getting the same behaviour where the client starts, then quietly closes a few seconds later. I see nothing at all happen; perhaps its because I'm behind a corporate firewall and eveprobe can't download anything it needs? |

Honestly, EVE Probe isn't that large of a file (excluding the assets it downloads after installation). Couldn't you fine folks have the launcher team put a little icon or link somewhere on the launcher for EVE Probe which, when clicked, runs EVE Probe? The program the EVE Launcher links to actually checks checks for a new update prior to running the program. If there is an update it prompts the user to accept the update and then runs the EVE Probe "launcher". If there is no update it exits quietly and runs the EVE Probe "launcher". If EVE Probe has never been run before, then said link would install EVE Probe. This way EVE Probe is included in the EVE files but not natively installed in case the user does not wish to utilize the tool.
Broken down:
- Current EVE Launcher (link to EVE Probe)
- Installation/Updater Middle-man (if not installed, checks for newest update and installs it. If installed, checks for update. If up-to-date, exits quietly and handshakes with the EVE Probe Launcher)
- EVE Probe Launcher (downloads assets as needed. Checks if EVE is running and gives a warning to the user that EVE clients will affect EVE Probe performance)

As to avoid confusion on where to discuss the latest version of EVE Probe and considering the fact this thread has become redundant, it gets a lock.
