I played around with Evemon yesterday trying to plan next steps for one of my alts and to my surprise getting basic skills needed for production of modules and ships including capitals would take only 25 days. I checked Evemon blueprints browser for stuff like usual pvp modules, frigs, cruisers, BC, BS, caps (orca, thanny, etc) and with those 25 days of training I could produce them all.
Now, I understand that after getting bare entry levels of skills one must train the hell out of them to squeeze maximum efficiency regarding time and minerals used in manufacturing stuff to be competitive but for pure joy of making something by myself for myself is that really all it would take? Just 25 days and I can start building my own thanny?
I'm not asking here about profits, minerals, market, logistics, POSes, teams - I don't care about any of those things.
My question is: is there anything else to make stuff beside few days of training and BPC? Something I'm missing from just looking at skills required for blueprints? Invalid signature format |

Well, not much of competition if nothing else matters but the fact of making my own stuff :) As I said I don't care about markets and costs and profits, it's just for fun of trying something I never tried before.
Sometimes there's much more to activities than just skills so I wanted to make sure. Thanks for confirmation. Invalid signature format |

Most of the complexity in Indy is the acquiring of minerals (especially the massive quantites needed for a cap), the market analysis, the selection of profitable items, the timing, etc.
If you want to just build a carrier for fun, buy a BPC set (make sure you aren't been scammed, it's not that uncommon to find BPC sets that aren't complete), get your minerals to a lowsec station/POS and build away. Full build, components and ship, will take several days, depending how many manufacturing lines you have (affected by the Mass Production skill) |

Large quantities of minerals and BPCs are not a problem, I have access to both. And yes, it just for fun of building, not for making money. Going indy is on my bucket list but I always thought it's very complicated and requires long training. And after Crius freed us from slots scarcity I have not much more to use as excuse to not biting the bullet :) Invalid signature format |

Have fun then. :-)
Station/POS slots are gone with Crius, but characters still have a max number of simultaneous jobs which they can run. The number of manufacturing jobs you can run at the same time is 1+(Level of Mass Production skill) + (Level of Advanced Mass Production skill) |

Hehe, I knew there is something, there's always something. Thanks for pointing those skills out, already added to plan which now shows 81 days at current remap. That's more like good all Eve I know where everything is pain and suffering spread over long periods of time :)
But bare bones entry levels still seem attractive enough to go for it. Invalid signature format |

Don't get Advanced Mass Production to 5. It's faster to train an alt up for several more jobs than to get that skill from 4 to 5 for one more. If this is a once-off build then getting Mass Production to 4 (5 jobs) should be sufficient. |

Yeah, I realize that but I always put level V into plans just to have an idea of how much it would take to get into perfection. AMP V is 33 days on this remap so it would definitely be more sensible to spend this time for another character (I still have 2 empty slots on that account). Especially that new character could be just specifically mapped for indy stuff should I decide to go seriously this route.
I have many skill plans with 1 or few skills to take to level V, those are perfect when you don't have more pressing training to do or you just need long skills for time away from active playing. I'm sure I will appreciate at some point taking HACs, Recons and Black Ops to V :) Invalid signature format |

Just FYI, using 5 run BPC packs which are pretty standard, you will be doing 38 jobs (mostly 5 run per job, but some 1 or 2 runs per job for some odd components) to make all the components needed for a Thanny. A five-run job on a capital component with TE 20 (which is pretty common to get these days) runs just over 12 hours at station. This means that on a single character with 10 manufacture slots available via skill, you could build all the components within 4 days just by casually running 10 jobs per day.
Thanatos BPC takes 10~12 days depending on TE level, so all in all, you are looking at about 2 weeks project to make your own Thanatos. Pretty neat. :) |

T1 manufacturing is surprisingly easy from a skill requirements standpoint. As long as you can acquire the blueprints and minerals, building T1 stuff is a breeze. I generally gave up on buying T1 hulls (unless I'm in a hurry) once I realized how easy they were to build myself. It takes a bit more effort, but it saves me ISK. One only needs level 3 science skills to manufacture T2 components, which doesn't take very long.
Though outdated now (Material Efficiency skill points were transferred to Advanced Industry, though they are completely different), as a reference only, I had an old post on Basic Skills (you'll have to click a few times to get there, but there is more useful info on the trip).
For what it is worth: Level 4 science, about 6 months (dual-trained): http://eveboard.com/pilot/Yuyi_Yamato Level 5 science, about 40 months (dedicated account): http://eveboard.com/pilot/Vivian_Solari |
