Ice Fields (dont have the card here so cant double check) gives each ship in the region -1 to shields, am I right in thinking this will remove any ship with 1 shield in that region?
My regular opponent loves to play that card offensively. Sig Removed. Lacks Eve related content. E-mail us with any questions. -ReverendM ([email protected]) Yarr, CCP pirated my sig... |

I'd say it doesn't destroy your ships, because no damage is done to them. Would say it just removes all defenses from those ships, like flying around in a ship that has only got 1 Hull point left...

Edited by: Hunters Presence on 06/08/2006 16:18:30 Based on a literal interpretation of the rules, nothing bad would happen until the damage dealing step of a battle. At which point, it would have been dealt 0 or more damage, therefore destroying it. -----

If effects can make a ship's defenses 0 (I know the amarr destroyer can do it to attack), then I'd imagine the ship would instantly self-destruct, just like if you played a news to direct damage them, because while no combat took place, their shields are still 0.
An offical response would be good, but I'd say it kills them, as there's nothing that seems to say "This card cannot drop a ship's shields to 0".

Yeah that is a real loophole in the rules. Actually it goes furter as damage is only dealt in a region where combat actually occurs. So unless the oppenent also attacks the region nothing happens to a ship that has news or other penalties on it bringing it to 0 or less shilds.
Im not quite sure that is what is intentet though. It just seems... wrong.
Personally we have been playing with a house rule that says that if a ship has 0 or less shield at the end of ANY phase, it is destroyed. The game just seems to play better that way.

Hmm, so that would mean you can't direct damage a ship sitting back in someone's homebase, unless you suicide run a ship there so there's combat?
I still think reducing to 0 shields via ice fields and other such cards, means insteant popage.

That makes sense, How can you fly around in a ship that is exploding?

Exactltly. Thus the house rule. But its stractly talking NOT according to the rules. But until I find something that breaks the game if using that house rule ("If a ship has 0 or less shield at the end of ANY phase, it is destroyed.") i'll be using that.

I play by that house rule as well, though its only come up twice. First time I did it automatically, MTG-mode. -----

From the rulebook, card anatomy, page 14:
Shield > The shield strength of this ship or starbase. If your starbase structure has a shield bonus, it is added to the shield of your starbase. If this ship or starbase is dealt equal or more damage than its shield’s total strength, or if its shield is reduced to zero, then it is destroyed. All shields fully recharge at the end of each phase.

So the house rule is a real rule. I kinda remembered having read it when we decided upon it. Never could find it again though in the rule book. Thanks for finding it!

Your house rule is still missing something: the moment the shield hits zero, the ship/starbase goes boom, rather than at the end of the phase. The destruction is a direct result of the ability/damage resolving.
