Most of us are using some Google sheets. I noticed many problems with the Importxml function. The problems arise if you using the new sheets and the more sheet user you have.
I understand that if we have bad internet or too busy evecentral for example we dont get results. If this happens the results are already cleared and therefore the sheet is unusable. Is there a solution to keep the old values?
I suspect the problem in the design of the function by Google (including some bugs in special when it comes to arrays). Anyone knows something about the caching strategy? Anyone knows whether each user fetches with the importxml from local PC? (The old sheet was better with importxml) How to fix if the importxml if it is stuck permanent other than editing the range of the ID's for example?
Possible fixes: Someone said to move the importxml functions to a locked page. The disadvantage is that only one user does the updates and if not online the sheet wont be updated and unusable. Infact you dont need Google docs as single user.
Replacing the importxml with a sript. is a good idea but what is a good solution? Trigger the script with a button to get results. For this we need an info about the last sucessfull xml import i think. Trigger with the timer. Does the time trigger at once if its outdated and someone opens the sheet? Does the timer trigger for each user? What happens if the importxml returned error, do we need to wait till the next time trigger? I hope that someone has a better solution.
Another problem i encounted is with the assets and Google script. As for now the scriptfunction Xml.parse will be discontinued and replaced by the non debugable XmlService.parse. Has anyone written a good assets xml parser with XmlService.parse and is willing to post it?

Please don't take this personally but this question or something very similar gets post here several times a week.
RANDOM SOAPBOX ON! Let me say I think Google Sheets is a great idea but people are really expecting it to do stuff that it wasn't designed for.
I still find it interesting that people keep trying to use a free light weight public service for things it wasn't made for then are confused when it doesn't seem to work right. You're wanting the responsiveness of an application but are unwilling to pay for it. If what you are trying to do is really that important you'd be willing to pay something to have it hosted and crated or create it yourself with a proven tech.
Also just another thought did you think that maybe the reason Google made the changes to how the import works was to prevent, in their opinion, people from misusing/abusing the service? SOAPBOX off.
Hopefully some one also tries answer your more direct questions as well but since probably half of them need to be directed to Google IMHO to get the answers or to possible fix the issues you are having I'm not sure if anyone will. a script is a better idea.
You can add in error handling with it, so if you don't get data back, it just stops. Woo! CSM 9! http://fuzzwork.enterprises/ Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |

https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2750367 may be of interest.
It's not that hard to adjust to use the XmlService.parse service. The basics are very similar.
(https://github.com/fuzzysteve/eve-googledocs-script/blob/master/EveCentralPrices.gs has an example of how to use it) Woo! CSM 9! http://fuzzwork.enterprises/ Twitter: @fuzzysteve on Twitter |
