Ive been doing level 3s for a very long time in a zealot (overkill i know) i can blast through even the hardest ones in barely any time at all, a few months ago i started level 4s in a raven and some of them take over an hour and the gates are so far apart it feels like a chore.
Has anyone worked out which is most profitable on a time to completion ratio as im thinking of going back to 3s as 4s are getting repetitive.
Look forward to a few replies guys, thanks again.

I havn't actually done this on paper, but I estimate that I make around twice as much per hour doing level 4 missions as I do level 3s, not counting LP, which would probably make the gap larger. Level 4s are a tad boring though, so if I'm missioning and get sick of slowboating around in ye olde raven, I go blast through some level 3s in an AF. But yeah, I believe that level 4 missions are 2-3x as profitable over time.

an assault frigate can handle level 3s? thats cool, id have thought the dps too much to handle on some missions, well done to you. How do you manage the harder ones with such a small ship etc?

Well for the tougher ones (Massive Attack, Spy Stash, etc) the poor little ishkur really can't handle the dps dealt, especially when it is accross all damage types. In these cases I use a Brutix, or just skip the mission for something a bit quicker. But for most level 3s, AFs are just fine in my experience.

Level 3's can be run so quickly that they could possibly be worth more ISK/hour than level 4's if you don't run them very quickly. But if you have level 4's down and run em easily then they are prob a bit better than 3's. I havn't done the math, but I plan to when I get enough time to run missions a lot again.

It takes a slight paradyme shift in your apporach to the l3 mission. You use high transversal to your favor. AB is necessity pretty much. Kill webbers before they slow you down and allow the bigger guys a chance to behead you. AF's also have higher resists so when coupled with small sig radius, missile dmg is reduced significantly. Harpy's can snipe so well that sometimes you finish the encounter with barely a scratch on shields. Other af's like retribution are extreme tankers. Basically, size and speed are your primary attributes. They get the mission to the point that your ship can handle it.
try it and you'll find its actually not hard at all. Especially if you are familiar with the missions you do Krav ===== Close encounter of the Hijack kind? Impossible. Unless it is as bad as I think... And if they were out to get m-- |

Also an assault frig with resists boosted towards the damage your enemy is using helps a ton; say like a Ishkur(kin/therm +% resists), against say Serpentis(kin/therm damage)

Having been running both level 4s and level 3s for a long time I can honestly say that the level 4s are much more profitable over time, its all about the loot and rate of LP gain. Some level 4 missions (old pirate invasion, for example), will give you a fortune in recycled material + 1-2 rarer mods, do not discount the selling price for battleship loot also.
I make and sell a BS about once a month from recycled loot, which tops up the porift margin nicely, thats just not possible from level 3s, on level 4s you get a lot of junk cruiser sized loot, on level 3s its mainly frigate crap which has a much lower mineral return.
Its all about time, i play in 1-2 hour blocks, so can normally squeeze in a couple of level 4s or 4-5 level 3s, doing them both in my Zealot also.

A few weeks ago I got a Dread X-Large Sheild Booster off the Extravaganza which sold for 135 mill, a ZMA1000 implant from an important mission which sold for 200 mill and a Dread Invulnerability Sheild from WC which sold for 325 - add all the other named loot and bounties got close to 800 mill that day (is the most I have got in a day)
Missions are a means to an end - if you want fun, PvP imho
