Hello,
An interceptor fit for speed and agility can orbit incredibly fast. That's okay, because light drones can also fly incredibly fast. However, there's currently a problem in Eve whereby drones ordered to attack a fast-moving interceptor are not smart enough to carry out the order. They will do the following when ordered to engage an interceptor orbiting above 3000m\s:
1. MWD to the target at high speed (pursuit speed) 2. Reach proximity to the target 3. Attempt to orbit the target at a much lower speed (orbit speed) 4. Fire at the target and miss (even with 2 faction Omnidirectionals with Tracking Speed scripts running) 5. Realize the drone is out of range, return to step 1, repeat forever
This results in the drones not applying any actual damage to the interceptor and playing "eternal catchup". I put this mechanic to the test last night by having 2 Ishtars and a Vexor Navy issue launch Warrior IIs against a cooperating Malediction who orbited whilst trying to kill the VNI.
*** Relevant fittings\Skills *** Ishtar: 3x DDA II, 2x Fed Navy Omnidirectional with Tracking Speed, Warrior II x5, all relevant drone skills at V VNI: (This one is me) Same as above, I'm simply not yet done with Gallente Cruiser V so the tank fittings and hull bonuses are a little different Malediction: 2x T2 Nanofiber, 1x T2 Inertia Stab, T2 Low Friction Nozzle Joints, 1MN MWD II
These three sets of Warrior II were unable to apply enough damage to get the Malediction below 80% shields, though 10 of the 15 drones were easily able to keep up with him - they simply weren't applying any damage due to following the flawed combat procedure above. Though I'm ordering my drones to kill the Malediction, they aren't smart enough to do it.
I learned of a workaround from corpmates which overcomes the problem. If you repeatedly mash the 'Drone Engage' button, the drones will overcome their own stupidity and do the fo llowing:
1. MWD to the target at high speed while firing 2. Actually succeed at applying damage
I should not have to give the order more than once for the drones to carry it out. This is a bug and a flaw in core drone mechanics, and for players who don't know about the bug or its workaround, that lone Malediction would be immortal versus an infinite number of Warrior IIs launched from Ishtars with perfect skills and that's not right.
Please confirm or deny if this is a bug - if it's not I would like to see someone at CCP say "We intend for you to sit there mashing the Drone Engage button to get the drones to work correctly."
