Dear GM's, Devs, Ops, etc, etc
I know that you all work hard to give us as less pain as possible from the constant DDOSes eve gets. But isnt there anything you can do about it? Upgrading bandwidth's, get dedicated DDOS protection, anything?!
This aint fun anymore, every evening we are struck by this and it comes to a point where me and others dont go out on roams anymore because we know the DC is going to wreck us... And if it aint us who doesnt roam because of this, its the other groups and or carebears. So this all is killing for the content creation.
Please do something, I aint paying CCP for having a DC every evening!!! |

Yes, I'm sure there's plenty they could be doing about it and they're just not, in the hopes that f**ktards like you will quit.

Learn how the internet works. The answer is no. There is nothing they can do.
They can mitigate the issue with more bandwidth but that needs a lot more money. And if companies like google can be DDoS'd then that should tell you there is nothing they can do.
A DDoS attack it typically a ping or other type of flood. You send more info then the bandwidth can hold and it causes the network to choke. This is like complaining that a street is flooding because of heavy rain and asking your city to do something about it. They can't. As it doesn't matter how much bandwidth you get, big botnets will just add more bots and flood you with more. if ccp could fix this, they would be rich beyond compare. As then EVERY company in the world would want the technology. So no, they can't fix it. And even if they are adding more bandwidth, its not they flip on a switch and boom you have more. They have to lay new cables, and upgrade infrastructure. Again cost money. Just deal with it.

You ever heard of google being down due to a DDOS?! So you believe CCP simply doesn't care and rather wants to lose players?
Or do you admit that you were simply in a state of rant when you created this thread and that you are completely unreasonable about this?
Google is not one huge serverfarm like TQ. Google has no permanent connections. Google can afford multiple huge serverfarms easily.

Fun fact: there is a thread stating that CCP is searching for bigger better servers. I'd go looking for it, but I'm at work and there's a handy little search bar up in the corner there. Good luck! |

It's not true that there is nothing CCP can do. How much it will cost them is unknown.
But taking a glance at Cisco's (a major network hardware provider) white paper on DDoS, it lists some of the ways to mitigate an attack (for the nerds):
Stateful Devices, Route Filtering Techniques, Unicast Reverse Path Forwarding, Geographic Dispersion (Global Resources Anycast), Tightening Connection Limits and Timeouts, Reputation-Based Blocking, Access Control Lists, DDoS Run Books, Manual Responses to DDoS Attacks and Traffic Scrubbing and Diversion.
http://www.cisco.com/web/about/security/intelligence/guide_ddos_defense.html
I think CCP is already starting to implement some of these.
By the way, those doing these DDoS attacks are probably reading these forums. Please stop giving them your tears. How about denying them that satisfaction and maybe even re-subbing... |

Yes. And it's not enormously effective for trying to defend a server located in a single location while still allowing a large number of time sensitive connections from a wide variety of locations. Because that legitimate traffic looks very much like the illegitimate traffic.
Google mitigates DDOSes by employing several techniques that are simply unavailable to CCP. For example, you don't care *which* server processes your Google search, but I'm pretty sure you care about logging into TQ rather than SISI. "It's easy to speak for the silent majority. They rarely object to what you put into their mouths." -Abrazzar "the risk of having your day ruined by other people is the cornerstone with which EVE was built" -CCP Solomon |

Oh wait... you are referring to EVE itself and not serverfarms, right? If you quit because something is not working 100% right due to someone else's interference... you have basically validated the whole point behind the interference and give "power" to it.
Here's another way to look at it... think back to the time when gaming first started to venture online. Treat each time you log in as you would if you were still playing with a 56k dial-up modem. Adapt your gameplay around that. Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

The OP is clearly working with the D-Dos people. By posting as a "normal" player suffering he is in fact increasing CCP's vulnerability to ransom attacks and extortion.
I'm a critical person. When something is "clearly wrong" I will rage like I raged with Incarna.
But I will not succumb. I will not allow a criminal to destroy a game I like or it's producer.
You've been made OP. I see you for what you are. Leave this game and CCP alone! |

Well at least CCP is on top of it and try it minimize the damage as much as possible. It's usually stalbe again after 30 to 60 minutes. Or the attacks just stop after some time, I don't know. I'm just glad that I can login again after a relative short time. |
