Hey guys! So, next week I'm going to be working on an essay for my English class. It is an expository essay, which basically means that you write about and explain something (e.g., a cake recipe, and/or the chemistry behind such). My chosen topic is, "Your first day in EVE Online". This is what happens when you tell me I can write about anything I want. I figured I'd post here since this is, in fact, an Out of Pod Experience, even though I'm writing about EVE.
It's been a while since I've been a rook/nugget/noob fresh out of the academy, but I've got a few suggestions lined up for the uninitiated. This is being written for people who will probably ask, "What the hell is an EVE Online?" and so I want to explain things in a way that people who have never heard of this game will understand.
However, before I write anything, I want to hear from you guys. So, what directions would you give for your First Day in EVE Online? Kerono Thalmor Former CEO of Thalmor Corporation |

It's funny, I can remember what it was like being a newbro but I can't remember the specifics of my first day other than realising, during the tutorials, that autopilot was terrible and shouldn't be in the tutorials.
I can't remember much about my first day in EVE but I can remember my last day at school. The principal said I'd never amount to much and I'd probably end up in prison.
I cried all the way home from my son's parent-teacher meeting. GÇ£Some capsuleers claim that ECM is 'dishonorable' and 'unfair'. Jam those ones first, and kill them last.GÇ¥ - Jirai 'Fatal' Laitanen, Pithum Nullifier Training Manual c. YC104 |

Maybe create a throwaway alt and do the tutorials again? As a refresher? Or just create the newbie alt and hang out thing the started newbie chat channel. Newbros say the darndest things! Good questions about EVE stuff you haven't thought about for a long time. "Were [sic] not your monkey and so what?"-á -The Sex Pistols (2006) |

mate ...good luck trying to explain one of the most difficult games to play in the world ..in less than three pages ? one could write a novel about this game ..and the reader still wouldn't fully understand it ...trust me I`ve been playing since 03 ..and theirs stuff even I haven't tried .
probably the best course of action IMO would be to actually explain that this is the game that you don't want to play rather than the game that you do ... you would be surprised at the amount of reactions and opinions that you will get ..you might even find (as I have) that by putting people off playing eve as I have over the years that people will actually want to try eve ...
its human nature .. wet paint DONT TOUCH !!! .... what do people do ??? they touch it to see if its still wet ..human nature |

What Jason said. When I started playing the first couple of weeks I was reading guides and stickies for an hour or two a day and I was still pretty clueless then and even now, after six years I find there are many things I don't know.

I made the first draft. Here it is.
I edited it slightly, I took out both my name and that of my Professor. Other than that, it is unchanged. Tell me what you guys think. All of this was sourced out of my head, but I think my professor wants me to cite sources (apparently, "the voices in my head" is unacceptable). I could dump a shitload of guide links... i think you should add that there`s a wealth of knowledge to be gleaned by actively joining the various ingame channels (if you so wish) to enhance the experience that is eve
like I said in my post its impossible to describe in three pages what eve is about ...don't give the reader the impression that they are on their own as they aren't there is assistance ...you just need to ask ..
old saying ...no such thing as a stupid question... just a stupid answer |

You should mention that EVE is not for everyone. Its harsh, and it can be overwhelming for a new player and many end up quitting because its simply "to much".
Also make it clear that its a sandbox, the career agent missions dosent event begin to cover what you can do.
Would also mention something about while many will advice you to never trust someone in EVE you should not be worried about asking questions in the local chat in your rookie system, help channel or whatever other channels you find your self in.
I would also remove the part about always do something that helps progress your character and change it into something like "always do something you enjoy". Sure the things you listed are ok ways to make ISK, but if someone hates mining or running missions feeling that they "have" to do these things is a bad idea. Especially since your character progress when you learn thing (not skills, your own experience) wording it in a way that makes it sound like "without ISK your nothing" just rubs me the wrong way.
Point them towards the NCQA section of the forums, mention things that happens in the EVE universe (big wars, scams, player rage, events, suicide ganking, awoxing, reverse safari, third party trading... you get the idea). Basically, make the game sound interesting while pointing out some of the things you can do in the game, that are less obvious when your running the career agent missions.
If this is also meant for people that have no idea what EVE is i would also just remove the whole "I have done this and that". Sure, if you were applying to a corp it would look impressive and show that you have done a thing or two, but for someone without any knowledge about EVE those things are completely meaningless and simply takes up space. There is no harm in mentioning these things ofc, but you dont need that much of it.
Good luck
