My corp isn't in null but I want to do some exploration out there.
I fly an Astero with covert ops. I set bookmarks in every system I go to, several AU from anything. I always align to something. I watch local constantly and use d-scan, especially when sitting there hacking.
Can I walk into null sec with these practices and not die or do I have a lot to learn still? What can I do to get better? |

Well, you have the basics.
You will die however, everybody does eventually in null. There will always be that time where you get into a gatecamp you didn't see or where you slack on D-scan for a little bit too long, etc. etc.
Oh, the only thing I can think of now:
Scout.
Just to check what is on the other side of that gate you are about to jump through.
EDIT:
And don't forget to:
Not warp gate to gate cause of bubbles, use off line celestials. Don't warp to any moon, expect a POS on every moon and expect every POS to shoot you on sight. Set and use gate tactical bookmarks (anything off line and more then 151 km should do. So you can see/scan if a gate is clear and make a warp to it to jump). Ahh null. On my very first day, I got bored doing the tutorial career missions, and since I had a five hour timer til I could complete my business mission, I decided to check out the null system they were talking about in corp chat. So I swap out to my rookie ship, and headed out. Made it all the way to the station in system where the corp hangs out, and docked up. Was cool, a good experience. I did leave null for a little bit, to get some skills trained up as I was just not accomplishing much, but I did get on kill mails, and even got the final blow on one.
Now I am back in null, finishing up some skills, scouting for the corp and this weekend hope to get my name on more kill mails. Not too shabby for being around for a month or so.-áTo the OP, it sounds like you have a better grasp of what to do in null than I did, and I didn't have the advantage of a cloak. As said above, you are ready.
One thing I would suggest is that you park the Astero for now. It's a little pricy for you to be riding in on your first foray into null. People will target you specifically because you are flying it and you'll have enough on your plate getting a feel for the place without being actively hunted by everyone in every system you pass through.
Hop in a frigate (cov-ops if you have the skill) and spend a few weeks exploring. Once you are not fearful of every little thing, which is normal at first, head on back and grab the Asti.

I have something to add.
Play fully zoomed out. Many people tend to play zoomed in, relying on their overview only. This is really bad, because ...
... it prevents you from gaining awareness of your surroundings. ... you always lag a second behind, because the overview doesn't update in realtime. ... you can't see where to doubleclick-move, as you don't see where something is relative to you. Going on what Mr Epeen said, I wouldn't start with an Astero, Use a T2 covops first as you will be blapped a few times. Even if I had the ISK to use an Astero the only sane way that I would bring it in and out of Null would be through WH's to avoid all of the camps. But in my opinion you would probably make the same ISK in low-sec after factoring in all of your losses. "Your security status has been lowered." - Hell yeah it was! |

As mentioned you seem to get the basics of moving around in EVE.
2 questions to ponder on for you:
- Can you afford to lose the Astero?
- Who do you blame when that happens?

For what it is worth, friend and corpmate that is an avid explorer tends to leave spare ships around in NPC nulsec stations, with jumpclones.
If he gets podded, he can always return easily. [Getting into nulsec is harder than moving around in nulsec.]
Also, he prefers to use wormholes to cross nulsec. A Mobile Depot and a probe launcher come in handy. |

You will definitely die, but that is the only way you will learn how to improve. Personally, when someone I don't know enters my system, I get in a stealth bomber to scout/tackle with one character and a sniper to jump in after the tackle with another. It is easier for me to sit cloaked next to you while you run the data/relic site, then kill you and take the loot you just worked for than it is for me to run the site myself.
Let's say you bring an Astero. I am going to try and kill you for the fun of killing a faction ship.
Now let's say you bring a T2 covops ship. I don't know if you are actually a cyno pretending to be an explorer, so I would rather kill you than risk you light a cyno. The "scout pretending to be a newbie just out exploring" thing has resulted in more than a few BLOP kills. Better for us not to take the chance.
Null is big, and honestly is fairly empty. Once you get into null, it is pretty easy to find a system where you are 100% alone. Start with those, and be prepared to lose a few ships while you learn. Personally, I left for null when I was only a month into the game. I died a lot, but had a lot of fun. I think you should absolutely go for it, because you will learn more than you ever will missioning/exploring in high sec. |

Thanks all for the tips and advice. I didn't have much time this weekend but I did get into null sec. I didn't have time for much exploration. I quickly learned that I should be setting bookmarks for gates so I don't hit any warp bubbles. Most of my time there was spent creating bookmarks and just checking things out. Maybe I was lucky but I didn't run into any trouble. I was cloaked most of the time though.
Thanks again and I'll see you in null sec! |

That's actually a good thing.
Be prepared, now next time you can "focus" on the exploration part as you already have set the bookmarks.
If I know I will frequent a certain area of low-sec / null-sec, I usually take 1 or 2 days just to set my bookmarks. Personal channel: Crazy Dutch Guy Help channel: Help chat - Reloaded Public roams channels: RvB Ganked / Redemption Road / Spectre Fleet / Bombers bar |

Can I walk into null sec with these practices and not die or do I have a lot to learn still? What can I do to get better? Expect to loose your Astero. So better use a cheap T1 exploration fit until you know most of the mechanics in null sec (drag bubbles, interdictors camping a gate and so on).
If you are alone (or relativly safe) in a system make perches on the gates. These are bookmarks usually 150-300km above or below a gate. You can use them later when you travel through the system again and warp to them instead of the gate to see if the gate is safe and then warp down to the gate.
And the most important one don't steal my relic sites ;) |
