That is normal for new characters. Portraits are copied from game to the forums from time to time in batches.
There is nothing you can do to speed it up, so please wait patiently. --

What they mean in a nice way is stop posting messages about your portrait missing ;>
But thanks for the official word on it, reading 5-10 new threads a day about this was getting short of annoying.
CCP. Keep up the good work. If having no portrait means you do better things in game, I can deal with a big ! any day.

Edited by: Rentik on 18/08/2006 16:16:49 This would be immensely more helpful if you would define "from time to time", especially in light of posts like the above, where they're waiting months or years. Could you at least tell us when the last batch copy happened?

Sorry i posted with an odd character (Cpt Iris) last time, this is the character that has been around for nearly a year with no copy. A friend of mine who created an account a month ago within two days had the copy done. I am guessing that it is done fairly often, just some people are not included or missed some how. I would of course like to have a picture on here but it is not that importent to me. I just find it odd that some are passed over, i would of figured it would be easier to just automate the process. I am the darkness in the light. |

This issue has been ongoing for quite some time. As near as I can tell, there either have been no portrait updates to the web site in about 6 months, or there are vast numbers of people that have not gotten a portrait update during that time. Can we possibly get an update about when this issue will be corrected? The updates used to run every few days. Now they've been broken so long that people have come to expect it sa normal that nobody gets a portrait on the forums. Has fixing this item slipped off the to do list?

Seems there is a technical problem causing the portraits updates not to happen (it is difficult to acquire a powerful enough server with a good graphics card that would generate the portraits).
Matter is being worked on though, and hopefully will be solved soon rather than Soon(TM). --

Soon as in "as soon as we finish the new patch deployment, and get a couple of nights of sleep," right? Don't get me wrong, the exclamation point is no less fugly than my regular mug, but it's the wrong sort of fugly Take off every 'Zig' !! |

from what i heard it was all the new "bloodlines" that are the only ones with this happening.. the first 2 bloodlines from each race seem to come up in a day, the 3rd blood line characters are all ! on the forums..
in the end who gives a s***.. it works in game right so whats the big problem?!

Who told you that? You don't need a graphics processor just to copy/crop a picture. On my simple 2.8 Ghz PC it would take about 0.5 sec or less to shrink picture about 80% and copy it to another system in the network. That is about 120 pics a minute. If EVE has 100.000 users it would take 50.000 secs or about 14 hours to copy all pictures from one home-PC to another. Surely that is feasible for a company that has charged some of us 100's of dollars in the meantime.
Come ooooohn!

Who said anything about copying or croping? It's a matter of generating (making) the pictures. --

I assumed that the picture was stored somewhere already and, if so, it would probably be on the EVE server, as most of my things are. So you're saying that the picture is regenerated everytime I fire up the client?

Portraits are generated clientside in the game. They're not regenerated each time you start the game though - that's what the cache is for.
Now, as we're getting offtopice here, i hope your curiosity is satisfied. --

My alt has the same problem. The person you are looking for is t20.
Here's a recap from t20 concerning this issue (post necrophilia ftw):
Originally by: t20
With the new location CCP moved to, came network issues. Constant disconnects from the net and the glitchiness that goes along with it, prohibited uploads that took longer than 30+ minutes. The characterportraits is one of those uploads where frustration and putting even more pressure on our already swamped network administrators didn't quite work.
The problems were at the root of having our internal network, the TQ cluster and the websites cluster + relating database in three different locations. With the move and the new TQ cluster now, however ... everything is at the same location, leaving us with a direct connection from CCP to everything else. There's no connection loss anymore and I can thus stop torturing our admins.
Rendering of pictures on my side, has never stopped. The machine that renders out the portraits is uploading all the portraits that have been rendered in the last 7 weeks. This process should take about 3 days (seen the huge backlog and the huge amount of new characters).
Note that against popular belief that these portraits are rendered "on-the-fly" or "need a clientpatch" these pictures simply reside on a dedicated webserver (http://img.eve.is) .
Deeply sorry for the inconvenience, all should be well on sunday at the most.
Originally by: t20
To shed some light on this: I recently re-engineered the way characterportraits get rendered, as rendering out all the new characters that came in per day was more the renderer combined with the directory crawler could handle. I'm handeling the rendering process differently now by splitting up the one monster task in 21 different tasks. All characterportraits with ending numbers 00 > 09 will for an example render out on mondays and thursdays.
the beautiful part about this, is that i only have 10 directories to crawl instead of 100, giving me LOTS more time to spend on rendering than on actually crawling directories with +10000 files in them.
what used to take 26 hours (and because of downtime, could only be 23 hours MAX) now takes, through this splitting, only a mere 8 hours, but spread widely over half a weeks time.
So to conclude, I would say that instead of instantanious rendering, your characterportrait should, in the next coming week when we've had a full cycle of the new system, render out in the upcoming 4 days of your character creation.
