As I've always flown Gallente, and generally speaking despise anything non combat related skill/equipment wise I really hadn't taken a good look at other races haulers. Until three days ago.
Enter the Badger Mk II. OMG. SIX MIDS?!?! I was in heaven. Then reality hit me as I stared at my beautiful -10.00 sec status (it's even -10.00 with Fed Navy as well as Concord lol). No way was I going to be able to field a Badger in high sec. Soooo... I made an Alt! \o/ Well, actually I cannibalized an existing alt and quickly added all the prerequisite skills to it so that it could fly a PVP capable Badger with all the usual PVP mods etc.
So what I end up with- Badger Mk II, Modal Light Neutron Blaster, Small Nos in the highs, AB/Web/Scram/Small Injector w/ 150 charges/2x Multispec ECM (ecm ftw! not) in the mids, T2 Small Armor Rep, 2x Energized Adaptive Nanos in the lows.
Pretty decent tank, a little under 1k armor, around 500k shields, some antimatter in the blaster. I was set! Yarrr!!!
Having no idea of how it would really work, I tried to find some relatively small ships to harass first. Wouldn't really call it engaging, as you have to wait for them to shoot you first. So I went cruising around looking for some lamer miner hangouts. I found a lot of miners. What I didn't find were any miners with balls. 99% of them seemed pretty content to just let me steal all the ore I wanted.
I'd flip their cans, put all their ore in my own can, leave the belt and sit at a planet or something and scan the belt and wait for them to pop my can etc. It would just sit there. Lame. Every once in a while I'd warp in to check on the cans. Still there, no aggro etc.
Finally I get a guy to engage me. \o/ I steal his ore, and he sics his drones on me. He's in the smallest Barge. I web/scram/nos/shoot the barge. Yarr! First blood! Turns out my tank can hold up fine to 4 light drones. Noobs with no drone skills ftw. I try to ransom him. He's logged off. Pop goes the Retriever. 2x Strip miners for me. 6m for the first haul, plus the ore. Not too shabby!
I poke around the belts some more, but now the word is out in local. Much whining by aformentioned miner in local about jerk ore thieves and monster haulers with gigantic guns on them. Pretty soon this once teaming system's belts are completely vacant. What a bunch of llamas.
So off I go to a new system. This one looks promising! I quickly scan the belts and find a dirty miner and his hauler in a belt and warp in. I quickly flip the can and now I hold all his ore captive! Yarr! I'm amazed as he waddles over with his hauler and tries to retrieve his hard earned loot. I get a twinkle in my eye as his hauler goes down in flames. A few half way decent named expanders (Mark Modified SS I think they were) and some other T1 mods, but nothing special. Then his corp mates showed up. A Megathron, a Dominix, a Ferox, a Caracal and a few frigs I didn't pay attention to. So I ran like my pants were on fire. Turns out if you grab a can, you're flagged to the WHOLE CORP. Yikes. Learn something new every day.
I thought it was hilarious that a veritable FLEET showed up to kill a hauler, and even more amused that they completely failed to kill me. Yarrr. So I dock while they try to camp me in the station and I wait out my aggro, undocking once in a while just to tease them. Carebears hate that.
So after a few hours of looking for a new target(damned miners will *not* scoop their loot back!), I go back to the system I just killed the above hauler to find the same hauler pilot in a Rupture, all decked out in shiney new T1 MINING LASERS. Complete with 3 T1 Hammerheads dutifully orbiting their weenie owner. (If I were those Hammerheads, I woulda just left for the station.)
I scoop his ore again. Now he targets me and engages me with his drones. Yarr! I fight back. I start tanking and nossing and shooting. It takes me a bit but the Rupture goes down in flames.
Because I said so...

So, finishing up, I lost my first Badger Mk II... OF DEATH!!! So what to do now? Immediately build another one!!! Yarrr!!! I have since put the offending miners who blew me up on my buddy list. I know where they live, and will be more prepared next time, hehehe. Turns out you can fit a frigate in the Badger's hold, along with all ammo and mods and other support equipment. Now when I get aggroed by something I can't handle with my Badger, I'll just warp back to the station and grab a bit more firepower.
Anyway, to be continued... muahahahha

Ahhhhhh. I just thought that since half the story was about people being lame for not fighting back, that when/if someone did stand up, you would do them the courtesy of sticking around until the end.
My bad.

Thanks for your post. I am sitting here with my second cup of coffee as impressed with your writing as the Washington Post up on the next screen. I was intrigued by the article b/c I myself am a Badger pirate. You correct--<3 the 6 Mids!!!
I have been operating for about 2 months now between Jita and Tash-Murkon Prime and have noticed an increasing amount of macro miners. Just for the record, while I hate macroers, I take from all :-)
I haven't tried the jamming yet; in my mids you'll find 1x 10mnAB2, 1x shield boost2, 1x warp scram, 1x kin deflect amp2, 1x mag scat amp2, and 1x ancillary ballistic screen. My highs are the same; although I have managed a T2 blaster in there now, and my lows fit a mag field stab2, and either 2 power diags or sometimes I put in a cargo expander or nanofiber ... depending.
When I come across a true macro-er I have to fit 3 x expanders b/c you end up doing real work! I once made 13 hauls on a guy before he woke up.
Oh, and for the record, you are supposed to petition (why ccp considers this y our job i dunno ... not like they pay me anything for this) any macroers you see. So if you suspect macro-activity, not organized farming, but computer-aided reapage, then you are supposed to let ccp know ... and then, as far as I know, their ore is fair game.
Well, I must admit that sometimes the news comes late b/c I'm not certain and I don't like this forced tatteling thing ... but whatever ....
So ... the coolest thing about nicking in the badger is that nobody suspects how awesome you are. I mean, if you were just after the ore (not a good field btw as I reckon I make 1m every 6 hours or so :D) then you should fly in with a faster frig-like ship and just shift the ore to your can and then come back with a hauler of a diff corp. I've been known to do this where huge ops are going on just to annoy the crap out of them.
But in the badger you invite the aggro. The guy figures, I can surely take this hauler. I have drones! I trained, uhh, mining to 5, refining to 5, efficiency, mining upgrades, and all kinds o other crap to 4 or 5 ... and drones, well they got 1 or 2 ... and them other drone skills ... well those are expensive and the rats are weak....
So yeah, my killmails are overflowing with barges and haulers. I do have 2 or 3 cruisers, which is always nice, and I made a Vexor warp off without his drones the other day--a vexor, can you believe that?!
And yeah, I have my fair share of killmails with my name at the top. Kudos to miners who successfully defend their ore. Sometimes I get*****y, sometimes they are just better.
But I liken the whole situation to what if in rl some bloke walked up to you and stole your wallet? No, he didn't break into your house; he wasn't sneaky; he was just this brazen dude who in public, daylight took from you and then moseyed off? Well, you'd prolly look at the guy and determine if he was some big muscle head or some pimple-faced wimp. Obviously you don't know if he has a gun or knows some form of lethal martial arts, but I would say 9 times out of 10 I'm gonna try to get my wallet back ... letting the muscle head walk away prolly. Actually, I'm not gonna care about the wallet at all; I'm just gonna beat the guy senseless for his stupidity. But whatever ... I am AMAZED at, what was the word you used? Oh yes, "SHEEP" -ish behavior that these miners have. They've got 3, 4, 5 ppl that are allowed to attack but they don't. Some mining ops have 1 heavy they call in ... so like a Scorp flies in to restore order for a while ... but I can't imagine that they just continue mining on and on while there's this disruption afloat! Maybe they know it annoys us :-)
Anyway, good luck in your future destruction of undeserved barge pilots!
mike ray
edit--PS - did you use the word, "llamas" b/c of your previous Quake playing? :-)

So glad I could make for some entertaining reading! As I'm new to the stealth assault Badger gig, and dealing with the ROE of high sec and miners and what not, I appreciate your advice. I've also been considering putting 3x Magstabs in the lows and shield tanking the Badger, but it doesn't have too much in the way of shield strength, and I'm used to armor tanking.
Anyhoo, yarrr!!! to a kindred spirit! Send me an evemail in game and maybe we'll go harass some miners together.
P.S. Yes, I'm an old school Q1 player, and I continue to use llama to this day.

Two extra lows for one less Mid, 5mw more PG, 1750000kg less mass, more armour HP. in exchange for 1 point less senser strength, 150tf less CPU (but its not going to be an issue), and 5m/s less speed
...on the other hand using a banana might be a viable alternative.

Great read!
Saw mentioned that you can fit a fully fitted frig inside yer badger. Read elsewhere that when you 'splode, ships inside get ejected into space... So is it posible, that you could jam an interceptor inside, and when next you die, jump into your new-born interceptor and immediately reap bloody vengence?
I think that would be truely fraps-worthy

When you get your ship blown up around you, is there not a 30 second timer before you can get in another ship?
Getting podded and giving away a free Inty wouldnt exactly be the best thing you'd want to record yourself doing.
