Evening, fellow capsuleers. I am in need of advice.
I really love the firetail and used to fly them quite a bit before. However, I am a bit at a loss right now.
To cut things short - the slasher does the same things for 1/16th the price (just hull). Well, it's a bit more fragile, but the speed and dps are pretty much the same, with the same utility slots.
What are your thoughts on that? I'd love to hear if it's still used in something to better effect.
Thank you for reading. |

Oh, right. Sorry.
[Republic Fleet Firetail, take my home~] Damage Control II Nanofiber Internal Structure II Local Hull Conversion Overdrive Injector I
Experimental 1MN Afterburner I J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I X5 Prototype Engine Enervator Medium Ancillary Shield Booster
200mm AutoCannon II 200mm AutoCannon II OE-5200 Rocket Launcher
Small Projectile Burst Aerator I Small Projectile Metastasis Adjuster I Small Anti-EM Screen Reinforcer I

That's one of my firetail fittings. I've also tried with 150s for better tracking, gyro instead of nanofiber. |

The good thing of the Firetail is that it is a Jack of all Trades... making it very flexible and hard to predict. The bad thing of the Firetail is that it is a Jack of all Trades... making it hard to optimize and excel against any other Faction Frigate if you really want to narrow down and maximize for a specific job. |

Someone I used to mooch around with was fair obsessed with
[Republic Fleet Firetail, Mulberry]

1MN Afterburner II X5 Prototype Engine Enervator X5 Prototype Engine Enervator J5b Phased Prototype Warp Scrambler I
150mm Light AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet Phased Plasma S 150mm Light AutoCannon II, Republic Fleet Phased Plasma S
Small Trimark Armor Pump I Small Trimark Armor Pump I Small Trimark Armor Pump I
TD for a web depending on the day. Looks horrible on the face of it but it was surprisingly effective, guess that base speed really helps,
I know what you mean though. Thought it should have become a Rocket ship during the rebalance, reliable DPS would seem to suit its flexibility better.

If you're good at frigate PvP and want a versatile hull, roll with the firetail. Sparemods for fast fitting adjustments are a must-have.
Basic setup is usually ab-dualweb-AAR with either ACs or 280mm arties. From there on you basically only alter the propmod and guns, and suddenly you ace a 1v3 against 3 condors. **** the Slasher, the slasher is a poor man's frg. Just keep in mind that the biggest part of your cost is the tech 2 fitting, and both will use roughly the same. so you're not at 1/16th the price of a tail, you're at half the price of a tail. And the tail will certainly outlast 2 slashers.
Next upgrade - if you feel fancy - is a pimp'd dramiel. Yeah, that's right, the next upgrade in a firetail's role is somewhere at 300m ISK for the cheaper setups. |

well, tbh, if you want to slap a 400 plate on a faction frig, go rocket hookbill, perfect application with t2 ammo rocking 2 webs AND a td.
back to firetail. lots of possible fits really. dual prop with ancillary repper, shield buffer tank with ACs, dual web ancillary repper and 150-200s, web td ancill repper and acs, dual web and arties. often you can also fit a nos or a neut. they're all very effective. I absolutely don't like OP's fit, imo the firetail really isn't meant to active shield tank, and 2 lows on speed mods are wasted for a brawler already that fast, and that has the option to go 2 webs. Also, if you have troubles tracking, instead of using metastasis you can go with 150s, really, and use that rig for something else |

The Firetail is incredibly unpredictable and that's it strength, sure it's not as good of a close range brawler as a Comet and it doesn't have the range control of a Hookbill or the kiting capability of the Slicer, but because of it's unpredictability you may end up losing to one anyway since you simply can't be prepared for all it's fits. It's also one of the cheaper faction frigs and easily one of my favourites.
People have mentioned many fits above and my favourite are: Dual Web with 280 Arties, Dual Prop with AAR, Ab/Scram/Web/MSE with 200mm ACs + 2 Gyros for 200+dps and ab/scram/web/td w/ arties and AAR |

This is a fit I have flown a fair bit and enjoyed, its not exactly the best ship but it has great volley and is fairly unexpected.
