I'm new in the eve world and the time to take a cruiser comes, i have a lot of questions but the biggest one now is what i take Omen that has 4 turret points and 1 launcher for missiles or Maller that has more atributes (CPU, MW, Capacitator, etc.....) but doesn't have launcher, has 5 turret points.
I hope someone can explain me what prefers, thanks for the help.

For me, it's the Maller every time. I just can't fit the mods to an Omen that would make it worth flying. In most setups I've seen the Maller ends up outdamaging and outtanking the Omen anyway, even with the RoF bonus in consideration.
Sad really, because the Omen has a gorgeous frame...

The Omen is more of a damage dealer with a Rate of Fire bonus.
The Maller is a solid tank with an armor damage resistance bonus.

With Amarr cruiser level IV, the Maller and the Omen would do identical amounts of damage using their laser armament. This is because the Omen gets a 5% bonus to medium energy turret rate of fire per level, so 4 / 0.8 = 5 equivalent turrets.
The Omen further gets the use of a single missile hardpoint and up to three light drones, which also increase its damage capabilities. On the other hand, the Maller gets significant built-in resistance bonuses, as well as an extra low slot, which make it a much hardier ship.

Maller til you have cruiser 5, then use a zealot omen works ok for adding dps in a gang (can get 400dps out of it which isnt bad) however it has no tank whatsover

For 1v1 and PvE, maller is pretty much the undesputed champion of this match. Omen would be better for camping gates though.

For PvE your better off with a maller, it's more solid tank will help alot in missions & rating. omen can make a good damage ship in gangs for pvp but you wont get as far as you will in a maller in PvE, id'e still rather fly an arbitrator for pvp though.

Wrong. The omen gets a rate of fire bonus on medium lasers, not a damage one. It increases the damage output by about 33% instead of 25%. That said the Omen can outdamage the Maller, but you won't be able to fit anything resembling a tank while doing so. ---

Buy a maller, fit a nice tank and go kill.
The omen is a niche ship, and extremly lacking in all current pvp or pve scenarios.

There is really no reason to fly an omen, ever. Maller just does the same thing, but better, and with more tank.

Not to be a jerk, but that's exactly what I said. At Amarr Cruiser IV the damage is the same, hence math of 4 / 0.8 = 5. At Amarr Cruiser V the Omen does more damage with lasers alone, not to mention the missile and drone damage.

i actually used to have some nice pvp setup on an omen which was something like
4x HP II SB II, 2x cap recharger small repper, 800mm plate, 3x MFS II
something like that, good for gatecamping and it dished out like 400 DPS

It is unfair how badly a Maller can destroy any type of frigate, be it tech one or tech 2.

Generally i'd say Maller all the way. though I have had some fun recently in an Omen ganking Haulers at gates. And unlike the Maller you dont have to be quite as scared of a sole Af raping you.
High's 4 Focussed Pulse II 1 Arb Standard Launcher
Mid's 1 Web 2 20km Scram
Low's 1600mm Tungsten 1 Small 'accom' Rep 2 50% Hardeners 1 Adaptive
3 Warrior drones
Tanks sentrys long enough to zim around system to system under sentry fire, and gank all but tech II industrials.

no way that fits (although it should imo :\) you need 2 RCU just to get in 4x heavy pulse II and an 800mm aswell also, heatsinks not mag stabs

You mean it's unfair that most Maller pilots end up forced to fit small lasers, which happen to track better than mediums and toast all the little ships?
Come on, don't take away every reason for an Amarr pilot to keep his wrists intact.

In pve, Maller has a better tank but its far from beeing as versatile as the omen. Its slow and only has turrets.
Try and fight stabbers in a maller... now try with an omen... thats right its easier.

If you can use medium autocannons, fly a maller and tank it. If you can only use medium lasers, fly an omen and gank it. --------- In the blindness, a streak fiery thread violently cuts the horizon. Bleeding golden mists, engulfing the blindness from within. Burning the darkness. The touch of dawn. |

Or just buy an Arbitrator and go pwn with some T2 drones, Nos, Medium Beam lasers, and ECM. It's currently the best Amarr T1 Cruiser imho.

Edited by: Myrk Reinhart on 24/08/2006 15:16:09 Edited by: Myrk Reinhart on 24/08/2006 15:15:43 if you go PvP in gang Omen is what i would choose
It is faster and normally deal more damage than a maller and despite what people say it can be tanked altought not as good as the maller can.
I personally fried up a t2 fitted plated maller with light guns with my t1(though named) fitted omen but i have excellent droneskills so this might have been an exception.
For gangs i would always choose omen since it is faster/cheaper/more damage and it is the combined damage that counts for the whole group not the individual tanking ability, but for single pvp i would go for tankability on maller.
just my 2cents
edit: did i mention omen is sexy and maller is ugly?

You're a new player
new player=lower skillpoints and less ISK
Buy an Omen. Mount a Heavy Missile Launcher(HML), and 4 small energy turrets. Remember to get an assortment of crystals for ranges.
Put a Capacitor Battery and maybe a Capacitor Recharger in Mediums
Put some Passive Armor Hardeners and a Damage Control Unit in Lows.
Fill the rest as you see fit, and go fly.
This should do well in .6 and above belts and deadspaces, along with level 1 and some level 2 missions. If you are new, then your skill-level/experience-level should be keeping you in .6 and above space until you're further along.
Hope this helps.

So you are basically saying buy an omen and fit it like a maller?
