So I've taken up the offer of a free 10 days on my accounts, and made 1 more new trial.
I've got an Orca, 3 barges/exhumers, and one of those newfangled Miasma or whatever they're called on the trial account running relays taking the stuff to the station.
Part of the reason I'm doing it is relaxation. I work two jobs, have a child keeping me awake at night and generally a stressful time of it all. I love the Eve atmosphere, I love the Eve music, I -want- to mine...it's a form of meditation. Mind numbing bliss.
The problem is, mining seems even worse than it used to be. A year ago, one Orca bay of cheap highsec ore was 6-7m. Back then a PLEX cost 450m. Now an Orca bay of the same ore is only 10m, but PLEX are 1-1.3bn. To top it off, the Crius refining changes seem to hurt the income even more.
What am I missing? I knew full well it'd not be a big money earner, was never intended to be. I'd hoped to mine enough to just PLEX a few of the accounts, even just 2 would be enough and I'd sub the others, but just seems an uphill struggle.
I've also received warnings from other miners nearby about CODE/New Order, but killboards show no activity near me. How much of an issue are they really? |

I think the IPH mining data is old. A Hulk has a bigger yield advantage over Skiff now. If you go back in this forum over the last month someone posted a spreadsheet with the current calculations for a multi-ship mining fleet.
The isbox fleets are probably focused mostly on ice mining and perhaps do ore mining when the ice is down.
Plex is currently listed at 850million in Jita.
Hulks require a lot of attention. An Orca + 2 macks might be more relaxing and tolerate of RL interruptions.
If people in your area are warning about permits you'd be better off moving somewhere else if you don't want to pay or fight.

Setup a pos and sell compressed ore. Only refine what you cant sell compressed. Move to to like Derelik, Devoid, or Molden Heath if you want to be far-far-far away from code. Or at least on the Jita side of Uedama and stay out of The Forge, and Citadel regions. And get a DST or freighter to move compressed ore... Not safe to haul in a T1. Or just haul it in your orca tanked up when its time to market. |

Thanks for the reply!
I only just downloaded the updated IPH today, is it just not being kept concurrent?
I'll check for the thread you mentioned, thank you.
You're spot on about the attention requirement, it's a non-stop game of wackamole trying to juggle even just three Hulks. I hadn't even considered Macks for the orehold. |

PS: With meh- orca skills its approximately 30% improvement in mining capabilities. So the much large fleets work based on this principal in excess...
4 ships (orca + 3 miners) is like having 4 miners (3 miners + 90~120% bonus yield depending on orca skills) So having 12 miners + 1 orca is like having 16 miners. So having 30 miners + 1 Orca is like having 40+ miners. + the bonus for compressing ore (which can be as high as 30% over normal prices) can make for lots of income.
PPS: Again, I don't approve of mass solo-macro fleets. Just explaining how/why they work.
Also thank you for the reply. I know the faction requirements for POSes got removed, is compression really that much of a game changer over selling basic ore? Surely the amount I mine is still fixed income, does compressing somehow increase the value of the raw ore?
My Orca is 5/5 on mining skills, only level 4 link spec though. Buying a Mindlink tonight when I get home, should help some. Running all 3 T2 mining links.

Ill redefine my compression statement :D
If your selling direct (filling buy orders in jita) Veldspar 17.74each = 1,774 per 100 = 1782 per compressed = 17.82 Per veldspar comparison. (from now on expressed (1774/100veld =1784/1c-veld)
Scordite: 3055/100scord = 2798/1c-scord
Pyro: 6400/100pyro = 6201/1c-pyro
Okay the prices are down right now... But it is monday, they are usually up on fridays last week it was...
raw 1640 -> 1800+ Veld-> Compressed veld raw 2400 -> 3000 Scordite -> Compressed Scord raw 5500 -> 6200 Compressed scordite
Refine all hq ores.... So yeah maby monday is just a bad day. Prices are low cause of the weekend supply boom. :(
But compressing and haling and refining and hauling still result in less and or safer trips per-hold... A 3bulk freighter can hold alot more compressed ore than it can uncompressed with cargo expanders and is much safer for it. Fewer trips = more time spent mining, and the trade off is probably worth even a small hit even if you cant wait till Friday to sell.
The other thing you can do is put up some cheap buy orders of your own and buy from local miners and compress, you can probably get for way under jita prices for raw ore and still profit. |

Thank you very much for the input and help Navie, very grateful.
I'll look at getting a small POS going and try some compression. As you say if nothing else it also facilitates faster and easier movement!
I've got a friend claiming he's making 1bn a day from Ice Mining...is this feasible? It seems to me that unless you're online constantly to know when ice belts come and go, you haven't got a snowballs chance in hell to get in on the action?

I have a similar setup as you do. One orca and three miners in skiffs.
I was able to mine ice for 1.5 hours a day and make what I need for 4 plexes after 30 days and have a nice tidy leftover.
I have not mined much recently because the ice I was mining, White Glaze, has taken a severe hit on price recently. That has led to fewer miners which leads to the ice field in my home systems not spawning until after my usual time to play. I have taken to doing exploring instead but keeping my orca driver and extra miners around just in case.
The best way to avoid the code guys is tank your orca and fly tanked Pocurers or Skiffs. There is always a tasty Mackinaw sitting near by for them to munch on.
