Hi everyone,
Today I tried to do the: Burning down the Hive mission in the SOE epic arc. I know this is kind of a hard mission since for the first time (atleast for me) I gat warp scrambled and webbed (not sure if that's the same) in a lvl 1 mission. Point is, I died the first time.. Now I know how I'm going to complete it, but I was actually seeking advice for what ship to buy now.
At the moment I have about 12 mil, and I was wondering wheter you guys would recommend me buying another destroyer, or try and get a cruiser already? Since getting a cruiser is recommended for the lvl 2 missions?
Thanks in advance! |

Thanks in advance! Hrn.. I had no trouble (except when I went afk in the last room). I completed the whole arc in a destroyer (I had help on Dagan), but a cruiser sound like a good idea for you, if health is the problem. |

Well Health wasn't really the problem. It was kind of my own fault, since I came in too close which is why my rails weren't really that effective anymore, and since I couldn't warp away I couldn't prevent my ship from being destroyed.
However, I was thinking: I might as well buy a cruiser since I might need it after the SOE epic arc. However I don't have that high of a budget. So I could also buy a destroyer first, finish the epic arc and then buy a cruiser. Or buy a cruiser right away, which might make things easier.. |

To be honest if you don't have skills cruiser will die as well. Better ask somebody to help you with that mission (and maybe others as well), there's always somebody nice enough to warp in his talos or whatever has enough overkill to impress newbies :)
And always kill rats that point/web you. Which one kill first depends on your situation, if you fly fast but fragile ship kill webbers so you can use your speed to minimize incoming damage. If you have sturdy but slow-ish ship kill scrambling rats first so you can align and warp away when your tank will start failing.

be aware, cruisers use medium sized guns so they may require some training on your part

When I did the SOE arc I saw the warning about that mission before I ran it and realized I needed a very different fit - long range weapons instead of brawling like I had done to that point.
I ended up skipping out of the SOE arc for a week or two while I traineded some new weapons and a larger class ship. I think it was an arty Rupture. The extra training time made finishing the arc a lot easier with a brand new character. |

There are a few principles to follow in this mission:
When you warp in, take time to observe the situation. The drones will be in two groups.
Use the tactical overlay to determine which group is closer to you and target only drones in that group.
Target the 'Strain' drones first - they are the e-war drones.
Use the 'kiting' method of combat - i.e. fly away from them, forcing them to chase you, but make sure you don't stray out of range.
Lead this group of drones away from the other group - do not in any circumstances fly towards the second group.
When you have killed all the first group deal with the other group in the same way - kite and target 'Strains' first. |

Control + Click is the hotkey to target things on your overview. It can also be used to quickly find the target warp scrambling you. Above your HUD you'll see the warp scramble icon and you can control + click it to lock the target. You can also hover over it to see the target's name and how many of them are warp scrambling.
Warp scrambling is not the same as webbing. Warp scrambling prevents you from warping. Webbing reduces your sub-warp speed (normal velocity that you fly around at). Additionally there are two types of warp jammers:
-Warp disruptors - have long range and provide one "point" of warp jamming strength (can be counteracted with one warp-core stabilizer) -Warp scramblers - have short range and provide two "points of warp jamming strength (can be counteracted with two warp-core stabilizers). They also shut off a ship's microwarpdrive module, if it has one fitted.
AFAIK NPCs only use disruptors so you never have to worry about your microwarpdrive not working. Since I mention them, it's worth noting warp-core stabilizers aren't generally fit to combat ships since they bring their own drawbacks. They are intended more for haulers and other non-combat ships vulnerable to ganking.

When kiting, anything that webs you becomes a priority target, of course. Preferably before they do, and before they settle into orbit around you (harder to track). |

If you choose to kite, the mission can be easier in a frigate, as you'll be faster. Those webbing drones have a speed of 900 m/s, which might be enough to catch your destroyer when you try to kite.
There are basically 4 ways to do this mission:
- Kite (as already suggested)
- Out-tank them, which even a new player can do in a cruiser, assuming you fit it right. (The second group deals ~50 dps before resists.)
- Out-gun them. I.e. kill them before they can hurt you. Out-gunning them solo is more for older characters, as it requires a lot of skill points. But as a new player, you can bring a friend and achieve the same effect.
- Fly around them. You do not have to kill any of the drones in the second pocket. They start attacking once you are 15km from them and it is possible to reach the gate without ever getting that close.
The first time I did this mission, I lost my destroyer, then switched to a kiting frigate and completed it that way. Nowadays I do it in an Assault Frigate and just kill them before they can even lock me. |
