Eve crashes to desktop all the time on my system. None of my other games do this, and I maintain my PC pretty well, so I doubt I have system issues. On the other hand, I don't see a lot of people complaining about this, so I'm open to suggestions :P
I know it's in the known issues, and I know I should submit a bug report (I sent in 6 the other day with the dxdiags and crash dumps and all the other stuff that sounded like it might be helpful).
My questions are:
- How many other people are staggering along trying to play a game that crashes every few minutes sometimes?
- Does anyone have any suggestions for making Eve work better for those of us that do have frequent crashes to desktop?
- Is this something that is actively being looked into/fixed? (If so, should I keep sending more crash dumps? :P )
Thanks for any input. It's tough when you get addicted to a game that doesn't really work :P

YES FINALLY!!!
Dude, you're not alone, ever since "Dragon" came along, I've been having the same issues, but here's the thing, it first happened on my bedroom computer. So later I installed it on the Family computer, and its worked fine for a couple day. But now, its doing the same thing on the Family computer. Its as if there was a virus in the code or something, I don't know, nothing makes sense, I thought it might've been my graphics card; but it has nothing to do with it coz I have a ATI Radeon 9550 on the family computer, its thats pretty good, but its doing it on here too so I dont know

Yea, it's pretty frustrating. All I wish is that I actually knew what the problem is; and of course that they fix it. I don't wanna stop playing this game already, it's too fun, and I've only been playing for close to a month. You go to open something up, or you type something in chat and then hit ENTER, and then CRASH!

Something that used to happen to me with ATI vid cards was that the VPU recovery system in the drivers used to make different games crash. You can disable this and try it that way. (hopefully this helps some of you). Once I disabled this I never crashed in any of the games.

We would think that with a full time staff of game devs and 3 years to make a game run smooth, things like this wouldn't happen as often. :( Sad, sad, sad.

I have been fighting this battle for weeks on my new Dell laptop. It has a Centrino Duo Core, 2gb Ram, 80GB sata, 7900go, etc. This thing runs every game I have flawlessly and just about all at max settings without breaking a sweat but I am lucky to get Eve to run more than 20 minutes at a time. Submitted all the bug reports but that does nothing because this has been a known problems for months and not a single update from CCP. I have tried everything; clean load, different drivers, minimal install w/16 processes running, etc. and nothing helps. Now add to that the daily server crashes and my Eve universe sucks. I really hate to think how bad things will be when Kali is released. It will be months before the game is playable.

I have a brand new Dell XPS M1710 duo core, I have the same problem and get a CTD every 4-6 jumps or undockings.
My 4yo desktop (2.4ghz P4, 128meg Radeon 9500 Pro) plays the game perfectly, my Dell D610 (1.4ghz single-core, 1gig ram, crappy standard video card) plays the game perfectly, but my 1 month old XPS cant?
From what I've seen on the forum, players with similar problems on dual-core or dual-processor computers report it works much better once you you set up a boot option with only one CPU active. So much for buying a top of the line gaming laptop only to disable half the CPU power to play a game.

Dunno if this will help, but is there any way that you can set the app affinity to only one of the cores? I remember that people with hyerthreading CPUs resolved some errors by setting the program to use only one logical CPU, so maybe setting for only one physical core would help, too? Just a thought... |

FWIW, it isn't uncommon to have issues when blending 'old' apps with 'new' technology or even 'new' apps with 'old' technology. Anyone that's spent any decent amount of time with computers can give testimonials of the "upgrade blues" when things didn't work correctly if at all.
The only good news is that usually fixes like turning off 1 cpu core are only needed temporarily until the offending app gets upgraded and you're running a 'new' app on 'new' technology.

Yeah, to me I feel something's "screwy" with dragon...
Usually before, my comp ran EVE just plain fine, stable fps of atleast 40 or more and didn't eat much of the cpu, like 70ish percent.
Now, I get unstable 25-32 and it runs at 91-100% cpu.

Still no official reply on the issue ?
I really like EVE, i have a great time playing it ; But the Hardbooting is really starting to scramble stuff up.
Could anyone DEV, hopefully, have any tips or perhaps a thought as to a way to prevent it, or perhaps what a fix might be ?

I'm also having crash problems. My system is pretty new (slightly over 1 year) and has ran eve fine before, along with all the other games I play. I admit I use wireless and occasionally that's the cause of the issues, but recently (last 1-2 weeks) despite high connection and high signal strength, it crashes to desktop every 5 mins at its worst (about 6 at its best ). I'm soon gonna get my comps wired, and if the crashing persists (which it no doubt will) it'll be obvious were the fault lies.

I have been using this to force EVE to run on one core only and it seems to help alot. Also get the AMD Duo core optimizer. I have included links to both

AMD Duo Core optimizer
Oh just for kicks: AMD Opteron 165 Duo-core ATI X1900 2G G.Skill PC4000

I hadn't heard of the logserver, so I did a search for it (Linky linky).
Sounds useful, and I will start running this when I play. The next hurdle will apparently be to find someone interested in looking at the crashlogs :p
(In regards to all the above multiprocessor/multicore stuff, I have a single core Athlon 64, and the game is nasty crashy for me.)

I accidentally uninstalled eve instead of evemon (lost all my settings ./wrist )
aaanyway... since then i have been getting Connection lost pretty much constantly.
I installed it from a new installer so i didn't have to install all the patches again, so i am quite tempted to fall back to an old one and install the patches individually and see if that helps :/

Blearg! This CTD thing is really really really annoying. I can literally play for about 30 sec to 5 min before it crashes. Basically if there's about a 50% chance if ANYTHING happens, it will crash: lock on to something, something appears in the horizon, warp, etc....
System Specs:
Desktop: Athlon 2400+ 1gb DDR GeForce TI 4800 SE Windows XP Pro
Laptop: Sempron 3000+ 512mb DD ATI Mobile... something Windows XP Pro
I did notice the less busy the server is, the less likely this is too happen (at 10k users, I was actually fine, but at 24k users, I literally can not play). The one other thing that seems to help..... is to have your map on..... maybe something to do with not having to process any graphics. I seem to be able to navigate (autopiloting) and do most activities that require you to not interact with anything in space. Basically combat, and mining are out of the question (well... still possible, but still pretty crashy and very very hard when you can't really move....). The map technique seems to cut it down to a tolerable crash every 15-45 minutes.... which isn't great... but is playable.... ish.....

I am curious as to why you never see a response in any of these threads regarding this problem from anyone working for CCP. They confirmed this was a known problem back in June and it is a sticky at the top of this forum but not one word since. I am on my desktop right now and it runs Eve flawlessly for the most part but my new laptop setting right next to me CTD's constantly. Actually CTD'd twice while typing this. A simple update that they have some ideas or are at least still working on the problem would be a great customer service move after three months.

I faithfully logservered 5 of today's crashes, and sent in the lbw's along with the crashdumps, dxdiag, and such. Hopefully it'll get looked at :)

I had this problem too. (P4, nVidia graphics, in a multimedia type desk top). Logged the crashes, sent the logs in faithfully, they would not admit the problem was theirs. Took me a very long time to solve, but here is what worked for me:
Eve graphics is very inefficient, it raises the temperature of the GPU significantly. Burned out two good video cards before I got a solution. High temperatures makes the system unstable, if you are 'lucky' you get the same symptoms, more than likely, they seem inconsistent. Other high end graphic simulations and games work even if features are cranked up. Used a number of active coolers, but once I got the GPU to stay below 50C/140F the game stopped crashing. It has been 2 months and not one crash, compared to a crash every 5 to 30 minutes. I have not noticed a rise in temp with the last patch (4557).
Sorry, this wont help much with the lap tops. A simple, inexpensive test, is to try to drop the ambient temperature 10 or 15 degrees, if the system seems to stablilize, let the temperature rise. If the frequency of crashes increases with the temperature, odds are good the GPU is running too hot and loses integrity, and automatic error recovery (retries etc.) just makes the problem worse.
P.S. Final solution was an active air cooler from Zalman for just under US$40. (Probably much cooler in Iceland, but haven't been there, so I what do I know?)
