Hey everyone,
I just wanted to say hello to the Eve community and extend an invite to my fellow new players to hangout. I am about half way through the tutorials and loving the game.
I am in my mid 20's, from the midwest and am in graduate school. I play at all different times during the week and am still figuring out what I want to focus on in game.
If you want to run some missions or just be in the same chat send me a msg and lets get to playing! Also, if you happen to have voice chat ability that would be cool too.
Thanks! |

Hi Matt, welcome. Please be sure to read the new citizens FAQ, in particular section 7.

Welcome to EVE! Few things you must know:
- Don't shoot flashy players in high sec.
- Don't turn into a miner or carebear mission runner. If that's what you like doing though, then by all means, feel free to be a juicy target for pirates and gankers everywhere.
- Join a player corp that does something fun (depends how you define fun)! EVE University is a pretty cool place for new bros (they teach you a lot of stuff).
- If you go to Jita, don't take to the locals, don't pay attention to local chat, don't fall for the numerous scams, and always wash your hands after leaving.
- Drone boats, best boats.
- Don't become an F1 monkey for some trigger happy null sec FC (not all of them are bad).
- Don't carry plex in your shuttle. Somebody would be happy to turn your shuttle into space dust in hopes that they'll get the plex (even in high sec).
- Always fly quietly with a big stick fitted to your ship (may require a visit to a temperate planet in order to get said stick).
- Never be afraid to ask questions, even after you become a veteran.

Welcome to EVE. May your journey be long and filled with good times.
EVE's Golden Rules:
1. Don't fly what you can't afford to lose. This means, only undock in a ship (or with cargo) that you don't mind if it good boom in a glorious explosion
2. Don't trust anybody. Trust is EVE's true currency, it's hard to gain but oh so easy to lose.
3. If it sounds too good to be true, it is. If you don't know why something that is too good to be true is a scam, it's a good scam...but still a scam.
4. 95% of the things forbidden in other game...are totally legal in here. Welcome to a place that will make Somali Pirate run for their mother crying.
5. When in doubt...right click it (EVE has many many hidden menus). When still in doubt...ask your fellow players for advice.
But above all:
Have fun and don't let anybody tell you how to play the game. It's your money you spent on this game, play it in any way you want.

The first rule of EVE: Never trust anyone in game unless you are sleeping with them in real life.
The second rule of EVE: A knife in the hand beats two in the back.
I suggest joining a player run corp, meeting new people, and stealing everything you can from them. It will give you a good financial kickstart in-game.

Err definitely do shoot flashy players in highsec. Just make sure you have a warp disruptor and bring your friends. |

Agreed.
They are flashy. That means they want people to shoot them and have made contingency plans for it, and you should consider that. But they are not invincible and you can do hilarious things to them.

Note: The "Don't fly what you can't afford to lose" doesn't necessarily mean you need the liquid ISK. If you have assets (like a ratting boat in secure space) but only like 10m isk, you can fly a couple of frigates, but then you run out of isk.. and then you can go make more. Although having additional isk is good, because it means less pvp downtime. |

Yeah I frequently will fly ships that cost more than my current wallet balance, because my wallet balance is usually tied up in market escrows or other highly liquid assets. For instance right now I have 300m in the wallet, but happen to be sitting on 30 Oneiros hulls (~4.5 billion), ~50 Enyo hulls (~1.2 billion), about a dozen Rattlesnake hulls (~5 billion) and a few other things.
If I have an accident and lose my billion ISK Kronos, I have the assets to laugh off the loss. If I didn't have those assets, I'd not fly the Kronos at all.

Another interpretation of "don't fly what you can't afford to lose" refers to the non-monetary, more figurative meaning of "afford". As in, "don't fly what you can't handle losing". I have seen many players get very emotionally attached to ships, or link their sense of worth and success to never exploding. Doing that never really ends well, so if you think you would be deeply upset if someone swooped in and killed you in your ship for no reason, you should think twice before flying said ship.
Anyway, welcome to Eve! Feel free to ask questions here anytime, and have fun!
