manual WASD flight control is coming in Rhea.
http://evenews24.com/2014/11/14/dev-blog-quick-give-me-manual-control/
fantastic, makes piloting and kiting simpler. +1
But to really make it shine, you need to simplify auto-targeting, because a player flying does not have hands to constantly click on overview to lock targets.
You have a module called auto-targeter. Its never used i believe. Change it so that when in manual flight mode, auto-targeter acquires nearest targets for you based on your overview settings automatically with every cycle.
That way you dont have to take your hands off the controls, and can just quickly switch targets using 1-2-3-4-5 etc and keep kiting.
Im thinking missile kiters, frigates, etc., would benefit heavily from this. |

Meh voice control, with Aura as the ships voice.

I USED to fly ships like this. Look up this relic from the past I used to play in the 1980's. |

OMG
There is a HUGE potential here to fix a very big long standing problem. You bring it up about the auto targeting, but there is something more.
When jammed to death.
It would be absolutely awesome to still be able to shoot when jammed. That is, when Mr Jamalot does his usual thing, be it a player or NPCs, your turrets "go dumb" and lock forward.
That plus WASD control would add an element to this game that would be absolutely epic on the one hand, and FINALLY the counter to being jammed to oblivion.
Imagine that: you can actually have a chance at doing something instead of just having to sit there jammed and scrammed and wait to die. Having to lose ships like that is a very big "meh" experience and I've heard it 1000 times how "I could not do a damned thing then I died. To hell with that".

The though is nice and all and I went through the whole "why can't I 'fly' my ship" phase when I started as I'm sure many new players did, like these testers.
I do think that giving too much weight to an opinion formed from 30 minutes of gametime might be a bit myopic. The actions in the itself is are resolved mostly by dicerolls behind the scenes, the mechanics are basically click and forget WoW style, the flight physics are more like a sub simulator, and your input has a 1 second lag. Without examining all of that potentially retooling many parts of the game engine; the manual piloting is is mostly placebo, except for kiters. This would significantly increase the advantage high agility and speed have in game, and does th overwhelmingly popular kiting meta really need to be made even more attractive?
At least now you can predict interception angles as you can only move your "rudder" every second, but incorporate this twitch play on top of a poor system for realtime combat with latency and the physics themselves, it makes it even more difficult to get interception angles and close for the reactive party in an engagement. Those small gaps in time will add up making it easier to increase a gap rather than close it.
Of course this is just kneejerk, and I'll have to see it in motion but I'm a bit skeptical. I'd rather have them tune the flight system they have in place that fits with th game engine they have going rather than cobble in something . |

Moving this from General Discussion to Features and Ideas.
Also, I like this idea. It gives love to a module that sorely needs it.

A rare word from Dorrim. I'm shocked!
I'm in agreement the autotargetter could use a buff.

I can think of some ergonomic keyboards that make this hard. As I hate said ergomonic boards with a passion (sucked ass being a tech working on users computer with them).......they can deal with it.
And the lead programmer for our It section has this funky ass keyboard where nothing is where its supposed to be. Freakiest keyboard I have seen. No idea why he likes it...I have to spend seconds looking for just the enter key on the damn thing when I assist him.

The idea is to make gameplay simpler and more convenient by paying for it with a high slot.
Yes I can use ctrl-click or set acomplex macro to target things quickly. But i would rather have option to pay for convenience with 1 high slot module.
EVE is about choices and trade-offs. 1 utility slot - either a neut, smartbomb, a cloak, or auto-targeter for manual flight. seems fair to me. |

In case you manage to get into a situation where you get a scram on you, this fight is over regardless of jams or not. It is really rare that you win in that case unless you can tank longer and you get your locks back.
And in case you get jammed and are not scrammed, you are still mobile. Jams do zero damage at any given time. You can do things that gets you free of that target lock pickle you are having.
