Complete noob here.
I just tried my hand at scanning down sites for relics and hacking.
I seem to spend most of my time searching for sites though...almost everything is a combat or wormhole. Am I doing something wrong?

Nope, that's normal. Around only 1 in 5 systems, at least in high-sec, has a data site. Sometimes even fewer, depending on where you are and how many people are around.
Set up some routes from your home base with bookmarks, so you can get a system in your scanning activities. I have set up nice roundabouts through some 30 systems that usually yield one or more data sites.
Also, no need to fully scan down every site. Once you know it's one you don't want, right click => ignore is your friend.

Heh, if you are in highsec then be prepared to be even more disappointed. Data and relic sites aren't as common as wormholes. Also with so many other explorers out there, exploring as a whole is a very questionable source of income. I dabbled at it for a full week last month and deemed it to be an utter waste of time. Not sure about low- or null but that seems to be the only place to go for at least "some reliable" income - at a certain risk of course. But I sincerely doubt that I will get to see 16 sister core probes each time I D-scan a new system that I've just entered.
Exploring in high-sec feels too much like a stressful race to me tbh. |

Yes. Go to lowsec with some friends and look for 4-6/10 DED combat sites. Learn to PVP so you can defend your find from pirates, and find scores like the A-type Adaptive Nano I found in one yesterday, worth over a billion. As a point of interest to learning to PVP, the site in question I stole by running off a carebear multiboxing two battleships cuz he was too afraid to PVP. He missed out on his billion isk module as a result.

Yes. Leave highsec. Problems solved.
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

Don't be afraid to hit low sec for some scanning, you will find a gate camp or two here and there but for the most part you can get into low and do sites, they are better but the "minigame" is more difficult. Be smart about it and you should be fine. Null sec is difficult to get into because the gate camps and bubbles can catch you much easier.
WHs are a good way to hit null but they are dangerous and you run the risk of being trapped in null if the WH collapses. Low grade Virtue implants are expensive but they do help. Get your skills up and don't be afraid to lose a ship because there will be plenty more just like it.
I usually open the star map and make a route that runs through systems that have fewer ship losses and sometimes you'll fly through it and it will be empty. If the system is empty do your thing and if there are pilots in system drop some combat probes, more often than not they clear out the system. The combat probe will also let you find abandoned drones. I have found every kind drone, geckos are my favorite to find but very rare. Good luck.

Peek inside wormholes. K-space data/relic sites now spawn in low class wirmholes. However stay out of w-space data/relic sites. The sleepers will pop you. W-space isn't that scary if ya know what to do. (Hint hit d-scan A LOT!) |

Since he's an 8 day old character, i doubt he has the skills needed to hack the cans in wormholes (hacking/archaelogy) nor the skills to actually scan the sites down. Lowsec is definately a possibility though, aslong as you keep an eye on local/d-scan and are patient. |

There has been mention of gatecamps making it harder to get into lowsec or null. (These actually do exist but are pretty rare).
You can bypass them entirely with wormhole connections. It's possible and not rare to scan down a wormhole in highsec that leads to fairly empty W-space. That W-space system might have exits leading to lowsec or nullsec, or to other W-space systems that have the connections you want.
If you find you can't hack the cans in null, give low a shot. IIRC low skilled characters can succeed at low sites most of the time.
