o/ I'm back in Nippon and I know a few other players who are, thus suggesting a meetup somewhere cute/wacky/terrifying/awful in the heart of Tokyo. Bonus pointsu for hitting multiple categories. Range of December 1-9th works for me.
Currently travelling across country so sparse time for internet. #shamfrudispray

I know a couple of ex-pat Australians who live in Japan and might be keen to come along. I'll point them to this thread.

Sounds like a great idea, I'm up for that.
I'm down in Yokohama, just a subway's throw from mid-Tokyo. As you know there are a Titan-load full of weird, wacky and indescribable places in Tokyo fitting for an Eve collective - it mostly comes down to how many people we can get along as to the places we can go (some of the more aberrant are pretty small); but some initial thoughts:
- Kagaya restaurant: zany one man show (probably only suitable for 4-6 people) http://archive.metropolis.co.jp/tokyo/448/bars.asp
- Robot Restaurant (as you probably know, more a show than a restaurant as food is, nominal. The show is like having your eyes filled with sherbert, a strobe stuck up your nether regions and then being made to watch a Cher performance where Cher is an extra from Ice Pirates or Guardians of the Galaxy - with a lot of sisters, chromed cannons, Gandalf the White, Robby the Robot, the Terminator and the Power Rangers all thrown in). Suggest you would meet an hour before in the psychedelic bar than watch the one hour show. You need to leave after the show as they have 3 shows a night, so another venue afterwards is usually good - if your eyesight has returned. http://www.timeout.jp/en/tokyo/venue/14427/Robot-Restaurant
- Thunderbirds restaurant/cafe - kind of fun and kitschy, although not exactly fine dining, it's Thunderbirds food after all : http://www.japantrends.com/thunderbirds-cafe-tokyo/
- Ninja restaurant - great fun and equally great food (albeit not enough space for overly large groups) http://twistedsifter.com/2011/12/bizarre-theme-restaurants-in-tokyo-japan/
- Capcom Bar, Maiddreamin and LuidaGÇÖs Bar (Dragon Quest) - see them featured in this article: http://kotaku.com/tokyos-most-unusual-restaurants-offer-more-than-food-1147350054
- Planetarium Bar (also see above article) - I quite liked this place
- Sumo/Samurai and trippy (e.g. Alice in a Labrynth) other bars/restaurants. See the below article: http://www.travelience.com/blog/themed-restaurants/
- depending on the size of the group, lots of izeakayas in the Alleyway areas in Tokyo like Yurakucho - these are great places to catch up. See: http://www.timeout.jp/en/tokyo/feature/9714/Tokyo-alleyway-guide
I am good most dates/times during 1-9 Dec, 4-5 may be a little hard as we have visitors from Aus turning up - but I'm sure I can work around any timing.
Drop a post next time you're online and let's see what we can do re arranging the above and then I think I'll set up a standing page for ex-pats in Japan.
And thanks, great post
Cheers

I'd love to go anywhere that isn't simply a bar. Also my Japanese is very limited. Hopefully I'll still be in Tokyo for the next week or two, we'll see though! |

Thanks all for the replies. Currently in Hiroshima and heading back on Sunday.
I think the Planetarium bar is the obvious choice. I agree that not simply a bar is a good criteria, as is someplace not too loud to talk (Robo Resto).
Best options for me: Tuesday evening Thursday anytime Saturday anytime Monday (8th) anytime
So keep using this thread if you have alerts set up, otherwise I'll be on my Evemail a lot more often by tomorrow. Thx.

Agree, there are so many great places in Tokyo to eat amidst wackiness (and they all serve alcohol anyway), I think that should definitely be a primary on the agenda. It's always good to catch up over a meal. Do any of the places I posted take your fancy? If not, there are dozens more places that are just great restaurants, small, medium and large. They were just the obvious classic cool/wacky places that came to mind.

Thanks all for taking this booru and running with it, I appreciate it amid my distractions. The meetup will be tonight, in just 5-6 hours actually, just for the record and anyone who might not have been part of the mail discussion. If anyone who can't make tonight wishes to try again at the times I've mentioned above, I'm totally fine with that too.

Great night guys, thanks to Lel for kicking off. Good choice to move off from Planetarium to more fertile grounds.
For those local to Japan, if you're ever at a loose end and feel like a drink or two, you know where to find me.
Cheers
