Last night, while roaming, I got into a huge fight and lost my frigate. Like a good little n00blet I opened my podsaver tab when my ship went into armor and mashed warp, picking a POCO and warping at 83 km (whenever I go out roaming, I always set my 'warp to distance' default to a random distance)
I see my pod fly away from the blob of orange and yellow, and scroll down my list and pick a random planet and start mashing "warp to" at 83. I'm still in warp, and start mashing warp to my bounce location. I land on grid with the poco from my first warp and hear "warp drive active" followed by my hull alarm, then am suddenly breathing vacuum instead of my own urine infused pod-goo.
After freaking out and probably getting muted by everyone on teamspeak, I calm down enough to read fleet chat, where someone wants to see my loss-mail, and see that I got blown up by a smartbombing proteus.
How do I avoid getting my pod killed? |

You did everything right but were just very inlucky. Personally I would pick a planet or belt but the same thing could happen. Selecting a distance that isn't zero is a good move as well (as you did). |

^ that right there. Also, when you are pretty likely to lose your pod if you are fighting in a bubble unless the other side is too busy shooting other stuff to shoot you.
You did everything right. Bad luck but don't let it get you down!

I assume it was low sec? Warp to a safe instead of a celestial.

Are you sure you set warp to to 83km (83000) instead of 83m (83)? I did that once. Lost a more expensive ship than a frigate... |

is there a way to warp to a safe that allows for mashing? my initial plan was warp to celestial 1, bounce to celestial 2, then warp to safe, since by that time, hopefully any would be podkillers would be bored and would go back to the main fight to blap someone else's pod.
I can't find any other way to warp to a bookmark except to right click the bookmark in my people and places window then hit warp from there, and that's not very spammable. |

There is now with bookmarks in space!
Make sure your UI 'compass' has the blue personal bookmarks, it will now show in space. Right click that and mash warp (easier then scrollign through your right click menu) |

You did almost everything you could have done right(hopefully you did had 83km and not 83m set up). The problem with big fights in low-sec(this is fairly recent) is that they attract a new type of "elite" pvp'ers. The ones that are using smart-bombing T3 ships designed to catch pods and poorly tanked frigates.
You could improve your chances in those cases by warping to a safe(unfortunately you can't spam warp there since the bookmarks in space don't appear in the selected item window) or by warping to moons(i would recommend you this one). A lot of moons have POS'es or they are in a cluster around a planet which makes it a little more difficult to be followed there. Once you made it there, warp to a safe and asset the situation(the POS, if there is one, will not lock you in time). By the way, be aware of this method in null-sec or WH. They might have bubbles around POS'es there.
Have fun. |

You know I would love to here more about the pod saver tab, could have used something like it a few days ago. Is there a guide or other explanation of how to set up an "oh my god get me out of here" tab?
Thanks in advance ... |

From the sounds of it you were caught in lowsec or null by a smartbomb after your pod ejected. The "effect" of seeing yourself warping out in your pod may have been the graphics just not caught up with what really happened. Never rely on the graphics for accuracy of your situation ;). Example, the cloaking effect. Cloaking occurs the moment you activate the module, and it's 100%. The graphics provide you an illusion that it's taking much longer to occur.
This is the kill in question: https://zkillboard.com/kill/42618808/
I'm thinking the Proteus was at the location where you lost your Breacher. Chances are it was this, and he knew you were going down so he timed his bombing. If not, then you were just unlucky to land where the Proteus was.
In either case, in a pod, you're not going to survive a smartbombing.

Glad I am not the only one who thinks it extremly unlikely a smartbomber is lucky enough to sit just the right random distance from a random POCO to pop an incoming capsule. Is there a confirmation for this kind of bug?
Anyway, a Dev once explained that actually spamming the warp-button to get your pod out is actually counterproductive and delays the warp, just repeatedly clicking - but not too fast - is better.

In lo sec they can smartbomb you (and gate-camp), so it makes it more challenging.
In null sec they can bubble you, so you won't get away.
You still try and save your pod.
And I misread this:"Luissen Kalak Kurene" wrote:I can't find any other way to warp to a bookmark except to right click the bookmark in my people and places window then hit warp from there, and that's not very spammable.
Right-click in space, you'll see bookmarks in the menu. Go from there.
Ctrl B is the shortcut for placing a bookmark. For some reason I thought that's what you were indicating . |

Ha ha, from the sound of some replies here someone hasn't been in low-sec in a while. It is very possible that what actually happened is exactly what "Celine Sophia Maricadie" described.
However, hunting pods and low ehp frigates doesn't work by staying cloaked at random POCO's or gates as some people seems to think. First of all, you(they) have a bunch of scouts for intel(both offensive and defensive). Second, the T3 fit is designed to follow the ship(pod) in warp and kill it once it lands. Most people either warp at 0 or 100 which makes the job so much easier(that's why the OP was asked if he didn't set up 83m instead of 83km; thinking about it 83 km is not the safest distance - is like 5km from instant death which isn't much considering the guy has all the time in the world to pulse mwd towards you).
If you don't pay extreme attention at what it happens around you, you'll be probed in no time at all and killed even if you managed to warp your pod at a safe. Bellow is a somehow standard fit of the (new) T3 smart bombing it is used these days.
https://zkillboard.com/kill/42649898/
As for the "get your pod away tab in low sec" is no rocket science really. Make a tab with no brackets, and add only moons in it. Another thing that helps(which one should do anyway when he's pvp'ing) is disable all the (nonsense) effects which make the game look pretty but get you killed because of the added lag(one that instantly comes to mind is ship explosions). |

My personal favourite is to warp to a belt within a cluster first, so any hostiles in pursuit will have to guess where you went. From there I warp to a safe, or bounce to get rid of my timers. If I don't have an insta-docking bookmark, I do a 5 degree scan on a station to make sure it's clear before warping there. |

There is a lesson I learned yesterday when I lost my ship+pod to a gate camp. Stick to one strategy per ship type to get out and not change "midfight". After jumping into the camp I clicked warp (-> too early, I should have waited 30sec something), got pointed, thought ****, and clicked for re-approach gate (-> ignoring the fact I'm not in a cruiser anymore but in a frig with almost no buffer), got killed shortly after, spammed warp, but my pod lost pre-alignment from the re-approach and got popped ... probably just overheat+MWD the moment when the aggression sound happened would have saved my ship.
I'm my own NPC alt.
