Well then! Look at this, I'm making an IGS post. Isn't that wonderful? No no no, this has nothing to do with I-RED, worry yourselves not. It's just me, ol' Katrina, blabbering on about things of no importance. You know, the usual.
So I was checking on my investments in some backwater hydroponic equipment company and caught myself wondering, ' Why did I even invest in this company? They haven't turned a profit for three quarters!' ... now of course the real answer is that they were making steady revenue and seemed to be on the fast lane to success. Perhaps that was just because of my initial funding they received. Either way, that's not the point...
The point is, why did a capsuleer invest in a hydroponics company? What business is it of mine what they do? I realize it's because I have too much ISK, and I feel awkward letting it sit doing nothing. So I invest in anything that looks good. I spread the wealth out into a plentiful variety of investments, to best protect it from isolated industry recessions. But, am I the only one?
Granted, I might be the only one dumb enough to invest in that particular company, but surely I can't be the only one throwing money through shell accounts into baseline companies! It's not our business, and most of the empires certainly don't want us crashing local economies with ISK, so we're not supposed to be doing this... but if you're tricky you can get away with it in smaller amounts like I do.
But what of you, dear IGS? What do you lovely little eggers invest in? Carbonated beverages? Transportation? Mining? All of the above? What is it you put your money into when you're finding yourself unoccupied and needing to throw it somewhere?

I have a few questions!
Why is the railroad underground? Is it particularly hilly terrain? Do you invest in tunneling and engineering companies?
What exactly is a 'deprogramming treatment center'? What are they deprogramming and why?
Uneducated workplaces? Like... sweatshops?
Also, half naked women. I demand explicit elaboration.

Woah now, let's at least have dinner before asking me to reach down below!
It just struck me that you're Minmatar, and probably referring to the business of freedom fighting, which all the exploding trains and tunnels and whatnot makes more sense now.

I invest in just about anything I know that will turn a decent profit. A plethora of various industries all across New Eden. Industrial firms, electronics companies, hovercar manufacturers, food developers, to name but a few. I wouldn't say I do this out of boredom per se. I do like putting hard-earned ISK to good use, however. As I'm sure you're aware, if you can work the system properly you can avoid the chastising glare of local governments when you inject some ISK into a baseliner economy.

This is likely going to sound more pompous and snarky than I intend it to, but...
I tend to keep the particulars of my investments shielded from public scrutiny as a matter of practice. However, the generalities are that I tend to invest my ISK and time in the same places, people and/or causes.

Someone tied up to your highsec dock would probably think of hydroponics as something redundant, or merely a comedic asset to play along, I'd suppose.
The real side of war is different however. Some people out there are rather hungry. and with supply lines off, have to resort to local produce. That's when emotions run high and you don't want the locals to believe everything a person like myself is saying now, do you?

I have a battalion of security troops that I operate under license as a private security firm. Right now they're fully deployed keeping the peace in a high stress environment. That company is mostly operated by the Brigadier-General who heads the TO&E whilst I provide the money and some of the specialist know-how in multicultural security operations that's sort of become my specialty.
Most of the balance of my wealth is invested in Kaalakiota voting stock. That's an investment that's already paid dividends, I can tell you - I got in when the price dropped during the Heth debacle. Like most people I don't have the time to sufficiently educate myself on the issues enough to objectively utilise my votes for the greater good, so I have contracted them over to a professional. They are handled by the Tuulinen Foundation for a Better State, which handles those shares, my charitable interests and also maintains a robust and diversified portfolio of investments.
Until recently those investments have been solely within the State. I briefly explored the idea of investing in Minmatar Infrastructure improvement projects, but Pyre's recent deployment choices have made that more problematic, so those ideas are in abeyance. I have some investments in Empire corporations who were behind the investments in State corporations 15 years ago. Call it counter-battery fire - I at least want foreknowledge if those relationships start going sour.

I tend to invest in technological developments, especially along the lines of high-grade remote electronics and signals systems. Now and then, I'll throw money at up and coming militia pilots if I see them having a run of bad luck, or old colleagues I used to know back in the Navy during my baseliner days.
But my main investment is in the infrastructure and terraforming of my home planet. There is a lot of work that needs to be done, and as one of the very few actual Capsuleers from my homeworld, I am in a position to speed that work along greatly. |

I invest in my little fathers gambling addiction. The requests are getting bigger and bigger by the month, so I can only assume it is a growth industry.
No, but seriously. I own and fund a small charity that assists disenfranchised or unemployable individuals in the State in immigrating to the Gallente Federation. It is fine that State society expects very specific things of people for them to be accepted, but it is unfair that those who are not suited to or are unable to meet those expectations are doomed to short lives of petty crime and painful instability on their homeworlds simply because they cannot even afford travel to a society where they would be better suited. I hope to alleviate the problem. |

I suggest that your efforts might be better spent on retraining the disaffected to rejoin working society. Also, it sounds like there is much work to be done on Achura Prime.
Regarding your father, I understand that supporting him is a non-optional social convention, but have you considered putting him on an allowance? That word. Not stipend, gratuity, per diem or anything else - an allowance. You might find it dries up his requests for financial assistance.

Pieter,
I think you misunderstand what I mean by "unemployable". I don't mean people who have had a bad run of luck and need help to get back on their feet. I'm talking more about the incompatible - Those with mental disorders, fundamentally anti-authoritarian worldviews, and publically outed homosexuals. Not the sort of stuff you could "fix".
Also, I was mostly joking about my father. I come from a very wealthy, old family - He probably has more money than I do, albeit tied up in investments. He doesn't need my income, but he paid for my schooling to begin with and is the only reason I'm here at all, so I send him a little every month just out of goodwill. Also, so he doesn't go into my room and throw out all of my old stuffed animals.
He's going through a bit of a difficult period right now, though, and extra earnings for people in unhappy states of mind tend to be, er, not the most wisely spent.

Let me try and explain the emotional baggage involved in being part of a large, close family in way you'll be familiar with, Pieter. You worked for the Peace and Order unit - You must have been exposed to kidnappings a few times, so you're probably acquainted with the concept of "Capture-bonding", of people forming bizzarely close and usually unhealthy relationships in the context of the extreme intimacy between captor and captee. Now, most kidnappings don't last more then a couple months at most, so those sort of things must happen pretty fast, right?
Now imagine it lasting for twenty years. |
