Gwen Ikiryo wrote:Let me try and explain the emotional baggage involved in being part of a large, close family in way you'll be familiar with, Pieter. You worked for the Peace and Order unit - You must have been exposed to kidnappings a few times, so you're probably acquainted with the concept of "Capture-bonding", of people forming bizzarely close and usually unhealthy relationships in the context of the extreme intimacy between captor and captee. Now, most kidnappings don't last more then a couple months at most, so those sort of things must happen pretty fast, right?
Now imagine it lasting for twenty years.
Well... Yes... Generally we try to resolve issues of unlawful restraint and keeping someone against their will long before mid to long term psychological effects manifest, but I'm familiar with the concepts.
Maker's breath... Is that what families are REALLY like? I have to be honest, this concerns me greatly!
"You let one of them go, but that's nothing new is it? Every now and then a little victim is allowed to escape; because she smiled, because he's got freckles, because they begged. And that's how you live with yourself. That's how you slaughter millions."

I invest in my caravan, of course!
Even a small, off-shoot caravan such as the Katanga needs a substantial amount of food, oxygen, and life-support maintenance to sustain the baseliner population.
Then there is the provision of services, such as healthcare, education and security. A good Master looks after their people.
And on top of those, there are the merchants who deal in basic commodities; although largely self-sufficient, they still need a place to pitch their stalls and station rents covered for their caravanserai.
Finally, the largest investment goes into the buying up of cytoserocin and mykoserocin gases. The products that are derived from these bring enough profits to cover all our needs.

I personally invest in triple-rated Goonswarm Federation bonds. I'm really glad that my financial advisor; also in goonswarm, was able to secure some for me.

My investments vary but I specialise in raw materials, be they basic minerals or advanced salvage from destroyed Sleeper drones. There is plenty of demand on the lower-industries, and this demand makes for good trading if you're comfortable with the ebb and flow of the market in question.
Formerly I have actually invested in capsuleers, specifically their industrial multi-tasking capabilities. By paying a portion of prospective profit to my builders, I was able to greatly increase productivity at a reasonable short-term price. Should I get the time, i may start up again, but it was certainly intensive on my spare hours; I won't be doing it again without additional help and a substantial amount of time to throw at the system.
My holdings outside the capsuleer sphere are negligible, I see no reason to dabble outside my current sphere until I either retire, or legislation makes it desirable or necessary to my continued comfort and wealth.

Commerce is my vocation.
The title of your thread encapsulates what has become the dichotomy of trade.
It is in the end the only thing to which I excel.
After a time when the desire for possessions and power fade, it becomes an end unto itself.

I mainly invest in the family business. Which comprises a good few things aside to military education and services. Like silk spiders. Also caritative endeavours. As the family invested in me becoming a capsuleer, it's my responsibility to reciprocate, in a way.
Next to that, as far as it concerns planetside investments, I did put some money in the building and operation of churches.
In general, I don't bother myself with acquiring wealth I have no use for, though. So I don't have the problem of having money and not knowing what to do with it. |

Most of my excess income is funneled directly back into growing my own corporation. I try to live modestly but admittedly I have a weakness for clothing and end up spending what I budget for food on a nice scarf, or footwear.
I've also recently taken to donating a small part of my own income to a foundation that cares for displaced and disabled Caldari families like those of the Malkalen Tragedy.

Speaking more narrowly about direct fund support to baseline organisations, I support anti-gallentean and Caldari culture preservation organisations, societies and funds. Baseline firms, that are proud that they are 100%-free from gallentean presence and influence could receive my funding as well (if they advertise that they are clean from Gallente), just as organizations, that dedicate themselves to clearing Caldari corporations from gallentean presence and influence. Now it isn't government job anymore, and responsibility lays on shoulders of regular citizens, so I am trying to help them as much as I can. |
