I was hoping to shed some light on my doomed explorer solo mission through the Reyi System.
I was as careful as I noob could be.
On local I was the only one there. I checked the star map to see how had been there the last hour and if anyone met an untimely death. I checked the kill boards as well to see when the last flyer died and by whom. Went through the gate then warped 30k from Reyi 8 moon 3... if I remember correctly. Checked my d-scan before sending probes out changed to solar system map to start my scans then I blew up in less than a minute.
My capsule was left intact or at least no one was shooting to kill me off right after my ship blew. I couldnGÇÖt warp out of the system as I didnGÇÖt know the game keeps you there until timer goes out so I hid in one of the stations..Still no one in local.
What did I do wrong?.. and I know I did a lot of things wrong to veterans. I also knew I would die very quickly in my little Magnate, but what is the point of exploring if you donGÇÖt take chances right? So yeah I went boom with no idea why maybe a GÇ£space mineGÇ¥?
i welcome all sorts of ideas and lessons to this question...

Reyi is a lowsec-system. My guess is that Reyi 8 Moon 3 had a POS with some guns. Usualy they take a bit to lock your ship and start to fire, but when you just sit arround there long enough (for example, because you are scanning), it eventually will happen.
You can check your battle-reports (Charakter-Sheet, lower-end) / Losses, there should be a kill-report wich you can open by double-clicking it. This will tell you some more details ond what did pop your ship. |

If you go to your Character sheet under combat kills and select losses you will see what killed you.
My bet it was POS guns since you warped to a moon.

If you click your character portrait top left, then go to Combat Log > Losses you will see what killed you. If there were no players in local then it was either a POS gun or NPCs.

Thanks guys I will do that. Is it the norm that the game keeps you in the system after your ship blows? I tried to jump back to Bika Sytem, but it bounced me off... |

That should not happen. There is a Weapon-Timer that avoids you to jump for 60 seconds after your last offensive act. However, given what you told, you should not had a weapon-timer (you did not shoot/fire on anything, right?).
So, that might have ben either "lag" (as in; it sometimes takes a few seconds before you realy Jump after you bounced into the gate) or Trafic-Control (No Idea how that one works either, I just know that it happens now and then) |

So thanks to the info above i got details: It was a control Tower from Killer Koalas. would warping to the moon 100k have helped? since I don't have safe spots I am not sure what to do except warp to the sun. |

POSes are always anchored at moons. if you warp to the planet itself, to its customs office or to one of the asteroid belts, you will not get shot by a POS (although there are often hostile NPCs in asteroid belts, so you should look out for them).
some POS guns will hit you even at 100km, the best way to avoid them is to cloak up or quickly warp away.
edit: when your ship gets destroyed, you get a so called session timer(?) which prevents you from docking and jumping through star gates. a common newbie mistake is to try to jump out of the system in their pod when they get caught in a gate camp. instead you should quickly warp away and wait out the timer.
I should buy an Ishtar.

Okay.
Open your character sheet and go to the combat log. Then select "Your losses" from the dropdown menu and you can see all your losses and by double clicking it you can have a killreport.
Now, judging from what you say (Reyi being low-sec and you warping to a moon and your pod not being shot at) I deduce that it will show a control tower on the killreport.
Tip: In low-sec / null-sec / Wormholes NEVER warp to a moon. Always expect that there is a POS on the moon and that said POS is set to shoot you on sight.
This is what likely happened to you. While you were in the star map scanning for sigs, the POS locked you and then shot your ship (by default, a POS only shoots ships, not pods - hence why if you want to scout out a POS, use a capsule or a cloaked ship)

No, 100k would not have helped. POS would have killed you there too.
No, NEVER warp to the sun. It's also one of the most unsafe locations as it's a Lemming spot where most are found.
Where should you warp to:
Warp to a Planet...mid-warp drop bookmark A. Warp to another planet...drop bookmark B. Now warp to either A or B, when you arrive in A or B, warp to the other one.
Now while in from between A and B, drop another bookmark C.
Then...warp to C and start scanning from there (C is called a safespot as it's now on any "normal" warplanes).
*P.s. where I say planet, you can use asteroid belts too or the sun for one of the first bookmarks.
*P.p.s. A very good safespot is something that is "off plane" and / or more then 14.5 AU from anything else or at least from the regular things in system (gates, sun, stations).
EDIT:
Ooh, so Killer Koalas is still around, they once-upon-a-time camped my system in Geminate while I lived there. Had some great conversations with our resident cloaky camper to pass the time

Warping at range to customs offices is a good bet. Sometimes if you warp to the planet itself you will land right on top of the customs office (they orbit planets) and get stuck inside it or decloaked by it. If you warp at range to the customs office you'll be guaranteed not to land inside it.

It takes at least 10 seconds for a POS turret to lock a frigate.
It takes over a minute for a POS warp disruptor. |

And a new player likely needs WAY more time then 1 minute to find out that signatures in system while looking at the star map fiddling with the probes.
As most overviews will not have the POS modules on it + new players don't know that hazards in the first place...it's a "logical" result.

These are the good losses. Much better than the 'oh hell, I did *that* stupid thing *again*' losses.
As a broad rule of thumb - when you enter a lowsec system, warp to a 'safe spot' if you've been to that system often enough to have created one. Otherwise I generally warp to an anomoly ratters don't care about at 100km (and pay attention to what is on grid there). If there isn't one of those anomolies up, I pick a planet (not the top one, not the bottom one) and warp to it at 70km.
En route to that celestial, make a 'basic safe spot' - bookmark a spot that you pass in warp, and warp back to it. You'll be safe for 30 seconds there 99.99% of the time, and for several minutes 95% of the time.

Just an update on my use of all the info above.
IGÇÖve been given on this thread. I used all the tips and so far itGÇÖs paid off. Last night I ventured into -02 and hit some Relic and Data sites. I got 22mil for my efforts and survived as well. I know someone will get me sooner or later, but that is the fun for me. My blood pressure shot up when 4 players warped into the system from 2 different gates and I almost head butted an Astero who was doing a Data site that I scanned, before warping to a safe spot.
Thanks again
