Has it been made 'perfectly clear'? WiS is not on the 'major to-do' list anymore, but I'd be really surprised if they completely abandoned it. Yes, they've said they're not planning on doing anything else WiS-related for the time being, but that's a far cry from 'we're never ever ever going do to anything with WiS again, ever'.
Oh, and:
Eve Incarna multiplayer "this year" (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-07-06-eve-incarna-multiplayer-this-year)
Now, the timeframe may have changed, and the priorities may have changed, but I'm pretty sure they're still working on it. |

It is on ice. Not being worked on, nailed to its perch!
WiS on ice
Even after a very active thread asking CCP for any indication that WiS is still in any plan in the next few years we have only heard silence.
I think the reality is that the engine CCP bet on can't scale to multiple avatars, that is why they killed the vampires and iced WiS.
Now to those that said STFU, I say STFU to you and challenge you to any show any CCP comment post the refocus announcement or the "on ice" comment I linked.

You need to take a realistic review of the history of CCP getting back around to abandoned features. How many years since FW got any love, or even something as basic as mining. How about the SOV mechanism, POSs, smuggling, low sec revamp, moving belts to dynamic rather than static spawns, Cosmos, WHs, the promised T3 frigates or a host of other dead features in Eve. We got the only single player single instance MMORPG in the 'verse, the CQ. And that appears to have taken 4 years and is built on an engine that likely can't scale.
You cite an article that is clearly no longer relevant.
So what makes you think you'll go through that door in your lifetime.
If you really want it (I know I do) you should be posting in the WiS support thread and join the voices that demand CCP clarify the future for WiS.

Quote:Right now our focus will be on classic EVE game play, as we've committed to, so all that is on ice while we figure out what we want to do with it. And more importantly...what you guys want us to do with it.
All that means is that they're not releasing more until they have a solid reason. They haven't 'cancelled' it, they just haven't figured out where to go with it. And again, I point out that CCP has not yet said 'No, we'e never doing more WiS'. All we've heard so far is that they're not prepared to continue with active WiS development until they know where it's going.

They are still working on WoD but with a lot less people, iirc. If I'm not mistaken WoD uses the same stuff to do their avatars. Either way it is being worked on in some way.
Also, I thought that this avatar technology would be able to handle lots of avatars walking arond with little effort (that it'd be the same whether its one or many). Anyone who says that the avatar engine can't handle a mulitple avatars walking around, without stressing the hardware, can I see a link to something that shows an offical answer to this statement? |

Google says
Back Burner
Noun: A state of inaction or suspension; a position of relatively little importance.
or
from the Meriam-Webster online dictionay-
" the condition of being out of active consideration or development GÇöusually used in the phrase on the back burner"
The artists that are still around are there because CCP still wants to flog MT and the NeX store, They didn't reshuffle the community folks, the layed them off (research more about who was fired before you make false claims) and WoD is dead until they have an engine that can support more than one avatar at a time.
I have never stated Dust is dead, in fact I think CCP has increased its focus to get it out the door, they need it to succeed of there is any hope for CCP to survive.
I don't think CCP would delete CQs but I think it is very possible unless we voice our displeasure it may be all we ever see of WiS.
My toes are fine, your research, reading skills and knowledge of CCP's history of delivering unfinished content are in a terrible state.
The fox is not a very smart fox, you have now failed three times to provide an example of something coming back after being abandoned in Eve.
Until you can provide any counter to my proof that CCP has put a stop work on WiS and cite an example of an incomplete feature being completed again after it was abandoned you have lost this debate. For example, where are the other sleepers? Other ranks of T3 ships? What happened to the POSs revamp? The Black Ops revamp? The low sec revamp? Smuggling? Real changes to low sec sov mechanisms? The change from static ore spawns to dynamic ones? (that is over 2 years since it was promised), improvements in mining? (same for the last 5 years)
So until you provide any proof for your position go back to hiding from hunters.

WoD and Eve share the avatar engine. I think you should be able to do some research and you can find it in CCP's announcements. Sadly CCP took a multi-year reset to move to that engine. :-( I think Embrace My Hate is correct. I think CCP found the WoD/WiS engine can't scale with the current state of PC hardware.

Until CCP issues a direct 'Walking in Stations is dead' post, all we've got is half the story. For my part, I don't believe CCP would be so foolish as to abandon something with such potential, especially not after all of the concept art, modelling and design tests that go into such a major task. |

i think CCP has gone about building WiS the wrong way.
The way CCP has done WiS is like if blizzard released a T20 raid with no T15- T19, its use less with out any way to use it just like the CQ is now.
Now if these had added in games to play in station ( poker chess other games ) or minor boot giving items that can only be used in station ( boosters, Quafe ).
THEN added in WiS and made these items that people have grown to love only usable in WIS i think it would have gone over better.
like getting smuggling added in, THEN making booster none traded on the market only face to face booster trades, usable cans of quafe only available by going to a in station bar and buying them.
they could of done WIS in such a better way

I do HOPE that walking in stations is NOT scrapped. I mean the WHOLE point of the 3d avatars, the captions quarters and all of that WAS to make way for walking in stations, otherwise they might as well just pull the plug on the whole captains quarters crap. Which honestly i think if WIS is NOT going to happen then captions quarters is a utterly useless feature in my opinon, i mean you cant even invite people to visit your place! whats the point?
I think maybe it just is on hold for a little while so that they can work out the features better i would hope... because otherwise they went through a lot of stuff just for nothing.
because having 3d avatars and a small 3d space to run around in and NO Walking in stations just to me would seem like a HUGE wasted useless feature. So i honestly think they NEED to do walking in stations soon and i think honestly they should focus on that for the next expansion or soon after.......but they like to take their time i guess. but I think they should make offical statements on this soon to let players know where they stand because having 3d avatars and a small 3d space to walk around with just feels....... tacted on unless WIS is going to happen.
personally im a bit frustrated at the extreamly SLOW progress they are going on it. I mean its been years and years since they talked about it and all honestly think it would have been better if they had just NOT done Dust 514 which sounds cool but come on there are already enough shooters out there as it is......... and just used that effort to focus on Eve Online.........
I want walking in stations and i think others do too otherwise everything with our avatars and CQ will have been a complete waste.
:-(
update:
I dont see where people are saying the CEO has Walking in stations canned. if anything he makes refrence that he feels that having an actual avatar and social interaction is something they should have got on the bandwagon a while back....... so it seems to me that walking in stations is still going to happen it just may be they are going to make sure they get it right. I doubt it will be abandoned. The negitive feedback from incarna is mostly i think from the LACK of things to do with the CQ that it felt less like a real feature so. hopefully they will work on WIS more so that that effort will not be in vein.
we will see. hopefully more news will come after the current expansion is released. the fact they want to make a 3d avatar viewer on people seems to me to show that they ARE planning to do something with it. why would they add more CQ sets and that if they arnt? be patient. |

You guys are really just stating different parts of the same thought.
When you say "on ice" most people take that as nothing is being done with the concept period. But the rest of his post would seem to indicate otherwise. It would appear that they are trying to (much later than they should have) figure out what to do with it.
Planning is work, every bit as important and time consuming (sometimes more so) than actual coding.
So yeah, they don't have teams devoted to it at the moment... so in that sense it is "on ice". But if planning is continuing, especially with a lot of community feed back, that is a very good sign.
In this sense I don't mind it being on ice, as long as the chef is still planning the next meal.
