Hi everyone
I'm looking at starting ammo manufacturing and I was wondering is it cheaper and is it less wastage of minerals to manufacture at a pos or is it better to manufacture at a station? |

Don't make ammo for making money. Make it to learn to the process, and as a bonus to supply yourself with ammo. |

But to answer your question, the initial costs of manufacturing in a POS are lower, but once you factor in the fuel costs and the additional logistics required, it will be probably be cheaper to manufacture in a station.

If you are producing billions of ISK worth of products a POS will pay for itself, assuming you can defend it.
If you are producing smaller amounts, a POS costs too much to merit.
Note that producing billions of ISK worth of ammunition is not a good idea. I used to do for-profit tech 2 ammunition production but the economy has changed since then and it is definitely not worth doing so now.
The main reason to build ammo is to learn the production interface.

With just about all things now - you want to investigate the costs of building and gain a good understanding of the System Indices.
It may well be worth a nomad-style of building. Take the BPO(s) you want to build from and the materials you need and go to the cheapest factory at the time.

If you are just starting out manufacturing I would suggest you attend the DIY School of Manufacturing and Invention. That is to say, I would make ammo, I would research/copy/invent and then do T2 manufacturing all of ammo, modules and ships that you will use and for your consumption. That way you can get a first hand idea of what is involved, what skills are required, what your costs will be (more than just materials) and what sort of scale you can run at.
Most margins will be cut throat, but there is a profit to be had. People will not tell you what is profitable to make because that will essentially make you a competitor of them. Industry isn't as simple as inserting material A and B into a production line and getting item C out and that's why you should mess around making stuff for yourself first to gain an understanding. |

Ships, generally, are not a good place to start. Low margins for most, high costs, relatively low demand. |

Is your question the profitability of POS vs station manufacturing or is your question about manufacturing ammo? There is a difference, the first is easy to answer the second is more of a subjective.
POS manufacturing has the potential to be exponentially more profitable from a strict numbers perspective than station building. A variety of POS assembly arrays will net you a 2% material bonus and typically a 25% time bonus so you will be able to build more in the same time in a POS than in a station and you will realize a modest COG's benefit. Provided your output is sufficient you should be able to make enough product "pay" for your fuel in your material savings. The time savings is where a POS shines over station building and thats because each fully utilized toon can produce 25% more material and the associated profit over a fully utilized station toon. The item being built is irrelevant for the purposes of savings potential and thats where my second question comes to play.
Ammo done right can be very profitable and the beauty of it is, its a product that is always in demand and thus can turn quickly. The challenge isn't making ammo cheaper than everybody its being able to stay ahead of your market competitors and selling your ammo first, getting your investment and profit out quickly for future investment.
So the first question is pretty straightforward the second and more important question is what your decision process should revolve around. Can you dedicate the necessary time to babysit your market orders and turn your isk fast enough? |
