My corp is moving to Providence, so I was thinking of doing some ratting out there. How difficult are these rats compared to the ones found in L3/L4 missions.
Trying to come up with a ship built for the purpose. I have both used active and passive shield tanked canes, but thought that considering the better resists on the armour for EM/Thermal almost makes it obligatory to go with armor for this purpose. I mainly chose the cane because I have been missioning with one for a long time and comfortable with it. Even flying a slightly blinged fleet issue in L4 missions at times.
I do not have any battleships skills so they are not an option, but my cruiser skills are good (although not for T2/T3), I could also fly Cynabal or Stratios, or lesser Minmatar cruisers. I have plenty of isk to spend, but don't want to fly anything that will be a gank magnet out there. Intend to avoid PvP in this thing.
Will this fit work, if not can it be made to work. Willing to go with a couple reasonable faction/deadspace mods if they make a significant difference, but not enough to make the ship too attractive.

It will work just fine for belt ratting. Probably some low end anoms. It doesn't have a ton of DPS and Keep in mind sansha TD will make artillery a pain to use. |

Don't ever use faction/deadspace mods on PVE ships in null. It just makes for shiny loss mails and encourages people to come back for more.
Overall your fit is fine for belts and lower end anoms. Try and move up to a Typhoon at some point as tracking disruption will be an issue. Since you are running an MWD you might give AC's a try, they track better, do more DPS, and will let you drop the fitting rig for something more useful. As long as you melt some loot you should be able to make plenty of ammo in one of the many stations in the area.
Skills being equal, EM drones are slightly better than thermal ones for Sansha due to resists, but not by much. The extra speed is nice though. |

I feel bad to suggest this, but just use an Ishtar.
Other than that Amarr ships are great. T2 Minmatar ships are ok because of the resists, but the dps is generally poor as EMP is spllit between EM Kin & Exp.
Your hurricane will work but it definitely isn't optimal. |

Yeah, I thought AC might be better, think I will try that instead. I'll take your advice and stick to the lower end anomalies unless I have corpmates with me. This is all new to us, so we will figure it out in time, at least wardeccers aren't likely to follow us out here. Figure I'll start with the cane and when I'm more familiar with the area I might bring out a cynabal or stratios. |

You will never see hisec war dec people out in Provi. They stay in their kiddie pool.
However you will see random reds and neutrals that want to kill you. Depending on what system you are in you may see quite a few of them.
Plan to loose a ratting ship every now and then. It happens. |

Yes a cane definately works fine for belt ratting. it's nor the best but it does the job. When I first moved to Provi I also started out belt-ratting in a Hurricane, using a very similar fit to yours except that back then I could only use T1 guns.
Enjoy your time in Providence.

belt ratting is so easy u can do it in a destroyer such as a talwar.
Since it's sansha space if u want to do anoms u will have to deal with td, which means either missiles or drones, a cyclone seems to be the best fit in my opinion (assuming you have appropriate missile skills)
The only other non-battleship solutions i can think of would either be droneboats:

Another option would be to get a Stabber Fleet Issue, it won't do the raw damage of a Hurricane (~200 DPS vs. ~300 DPS at my current skill level) but the difference is smaller when you consider realistic targets with the Stabber Fleet Issue's tracking bonus, Also, due to its higher speed and smaller sig, in my experience, it tanks much better than a Hurricane. In addition, I can often get things done more quickly in a Stabber Fleet, because I don't have to waste a lot of time getting there. A Cynabal could do the same things as a Stabber Fleet, and could do them a little better, but at more than 3 times the price for the hull, I find it hard to justify. |
