I'm only really discussing the argument for the sake of clarification (I can be a pain that way ). Plus I believe that the only way to get the best option in the end is to look at all angles. Personally I'm not bothered either way as I prefer being there with my friends group-mining, hauling and protecting alternately. It gives us all some play in each area and staves off the boredom of mining alone. (Had to point this out before my next comment ).
AFK mining is not fair if done when you're in such a situation where you've gone off for a few hours, IMO. However, there is also the argument that since someone pays for 24hr access (or thereabouts, ignoring server downtime etc) technically you could argue that you have a right to continue the play even if you are not actually at the console - after all, you're paying for the time regardless.
I guess its pretty cut and dried that macros are not allowed - full stop. Its just that some people ARE going to use them, and use the EULA loopholes to allow them to be used or demand recompense unless the EULA is modified to stop such methods.
What we REALLY need in EVE are two things (well, pertaining to the comments that have been made here) - 1. the ability to mine straight to containers or another ship. and 2. an automatic recording on the players machine of the last minute or so of footage (as an option) so people with valid complaints or at the receiving end of an exploitation in action can prove their claims are genuine and valid.
Maybe I should've started another thread for this, but its pertinent to whats been said - sorry.

mann
using a macro to mine is like using autopilot to move.
but i understand the DEV'S when they say NO THIRD PARTY PROGRAMS ALLOWED
if they allowed one macro task. it would just incite more people to other types of macro script.
if your to lazy to play the game without a third party program
then dont play it.
simple as that.

Originally by: csebal To clarify a common misconception: There is no mining macro - best you could achieve is a macro that drags ore from the cargo into the container
somebody posted an avi of a fully automated mining macro on the forums a while back i suppose it could have been fake but at first glance it certainly appeared to be real and if i remember right it had a different right click menu to a normal client
i think macros or fear of them has totally ruined mining in eve and is the reason why miners will never have their skill time justified with a really good mining ship
