Hey all!
New guy here, I decided to jump in and buy a month of eve online in hopes that I can delve in and enjoy the full PVP experience that eve has to offer.
Upon starting, I'll admit I've been rather overwhelmed with all the stuff you need to do before you can jump into PVP.
Right now I'm running level 1 military missions and I'm finding it really hard to get the isk needed for better ships.
Someone mentioned to me that Caldari isn't good for PVP, which is rather dissapointing because that's who I started with.
To the question: is it possible for me to get a good PVP setup with caldari? I can barely afford a basic caldari ship that doesnt come with a level 1 mission, and I feel like I should know what I'm planning on doing before I pay with the little isk I've managed to obtain. With my current ship I'm having trouble surviving run ins with NPC's, so I'm rather scared to even think about PVP, but I'd really love to start it!
Thanks for the help,
Southpaw. |

in regards to whether or not caldari can pvp, all races have the ability to do pvp. each race has ships that are more tailored to do certain roles. i would suggest you join a corp that is able to helpp guide you into what to do and need for pvp. you will find that a lot of corps are willing to even supply you with the ships and items needed free of charge if you intend on going full pvp. |

if you haven't already run the carrer agents. press f12 and near the bottom there is a button that says Show Carrer agents. There are 3 sets per faction so you can run them again if you want or need to. Also you can use the agent finder tool just set the agent type to Career.
The Military and Advanced Military will give you a few ships, and some isk. I think it is a condor, Merlin, and Cormorant for the Caldari. From there I would run the SoE Epic arc, I came out of that with around 20mil isk, and that included replacing a ship loss or two.
Level 1s are really about just getting your feet wet and getting a little experience, I'd say it is worth it to move into lv2s as soon as you can. With a little standings and a bonus from the skill "connections" you should be able to run lv2s very quickly. Connections only has to be at lv 2 or 3 for a pretty big bonus. Connections lv3 brings my 0.03 standing to 1.23. or at lv 2 0.25 standing up to 1.04. Personally I think lv1s could do with a rather large overhaul as with all the changes that have been made to the game they don't really seem to have a large purpose.
I don't know a lot about the pvp meta these days, but it seems that condors and merlins are being used quite a bit in pvp. Sounds like the Moa and its tech 2 variant the Eagle are being used quite a bit. The Caracal and Cerberus are also being used. The caldari is bad at pvp is a rather old idea, that just seems to keep hanging on. Seems to me there are a lot of players who don't even play but complain about everything anyways. And do note most skills will transfer over in some capacity to another race if you do want to switch from caldari.
There are many corps that take new players, Many say the willingness to try pvp overwhelms most other factors. The willingness to pvp is a factor that is unlikely to change, everything else can be taught or acquired with time. All they want is a few levels of propulsion jamming and the ability to fit a MWD. There is however a reason it is called Hero Tackle.
I'll join the chorus asking CCP, don't take my fancy names away from me!
In the name of the Limos, the Malkuth, and the Arbalest, so help me pod

Firstly your character's race does not impact your ability to train ships. A Caldari character can train whatever ships they want.
Secondly, none of the present flavor of the month PVP ships are Caldari, but that doesn't preclude the possibility that in 2 months time the most popular ships might change entirely to Caldari ones.
You'll struggle for ISK early on. This is actually a good thing as it will teach you to be stingy, which is a good trait in a game where spending a lot on a ship can be a big mistake.

Lets dispel some of the poor information you have been told.
1. Caldari are great for PvP.
Merlin, Kestrel, Condor are all great ships- Along with the Caracal, and flycatcher Caldari have a ton of ships that are strong choices for new and old players alike.
The guy posting above me has no idea what he is talking about. RLML caraclas and Flycatchers are very potent in the current meta. Light missiles (a caldari speciality) is the best weapon system in game currently.
2. Making isk as a new player can come in one of four options. - Scam - Try the exploration route (however this can be hit or miss) - Enter Faction Warfare and gain LP by farming FW outposts - Join a corporation that allows you to salvage lv 4 missions
If you have any questions, or want some more details- just PM me in game. |

Caldari are have some extremely strong ships. The RLML Caracal is one of the most effective T1 Cruisers in the game, it has a excellent balance of speed, tank, and DPS. Early on you could jump into a Griffin and be welcome in any PVP fleet. I routinely recruit Griffinbros to roll with my PVP fleets.
I reccomend that you continue to run missions for now and grind your way up to level 3's, the real money will not start coming in until then. Your first few weeks are always a struggle, but learn as much as you can, read as much as you can, a try as many different aspects of the game as you can.
If you need ISK for skill books shoot me a mail in game, and if you train up those ECM skills I could always use you.

To expand upon this, ECM and Logi are two of the roles people usually don't want to play. The necessity of logi scales with fleet size. 50 Zealots is scary. 50 Zealots with half a dozen Logis makes people run away with soiled pants. ECM is another that sorta scales with fleet size, just opposite of Logi. ECM works better in smaller skirmishes. In large fleets, ECM is mostly irrelevant. You'd be useful for jamming Logis but, really, what isn't going to force you to warp off or pod you?
ECM is a relatively short train and doesn't take a lot of time to be decent at. It also has a great impact on a small fleet. It's just not useful for PvE. At all. Thankfully it somewhat coincides with Caldari Cruisers. Just train up Light Missiles, supports, and shield tank. Bam, you're sitting in a decently fit Caracal and also have skills for flying a decent Blackbird. |

Don't neglect other electronic warfare skills! Sensor dampeners and tracking disrupters can be even more powerful than ECM. |

Each of the 4 major factions in empire space can equally well PVP with their ships.
They each have their quirks and similarities, strengths and weaknesses.
You can even PVP with industrial and ORE mining ships.

There really isn't much you need to do before you can jump into PvP. You can leap into Faction Warfare on day 1 and start to earn money from PvP (though it will trash your standings). The Tutorials, Career Agents and SoE Epic Arc in Arnon are worth (as someone avobe said) something like 15-20 mil... enough to buy and fit a whole heap of frigates - get 10 Condors or Merlins, fit them cheaply, insure them and fly around looking for fights, overheating everything until you've lost them all...

The Condor is a good choice to start out, it's cheap and fast; the damage isn't amazing but it does just keep applying. The Merlin, fitted with Blasters, is very solid; it's probably your go-to ship. If you go for Faction Warfare it should be powerful enough to solo offensive complexes and will make serious dents in even the most highly regarded ships of the other factions at its level (The Incursus and Tormentor for example). |

Money is always an issue. It takes the pressure off to have a little in the bank.
Your corp should be willing to help the new guys, but there is still a learning and earning curve to go thru.
I occasionally plant seed money, as you now know.
Play it forward.

Caldari are awesome to start with, condors are awesome hero tackler style of ships for new people, you can have a good T1 fitted one for about 10M (it may sound a lot but its kinda cheap, I may buy one or 2 fitted for you if you want to try PVP but dont have cash)
Seriously, the willingness to try PVP is a great quality and dont be shy to ask corp that you are looking at if they are willing to help you with it.
a suggestion for PVP corp Brave Newbies Inc will let you in and participate in fleets that are really huge in null sec right now (they are challenged by PL for their systems because the russians in the game paid them to lol, rumor rumor...)
CFC alliances are good too for some of them, faction warfare is good too, but still a lot of competition to learn on your own.
Spectre fleet and RVB Ganked public fleets are also AWESOME place to look at, low skill requirements and lots of kills within a few hours (Spectre Fleet took down a Super Carrier 2-3 months ago with PL in backup for DPS)
BTW: Condor: Rigs: Small core defence extender I core defence extender I anti-thermal field I
Low: Balistic control unit II (if you got skills for it) Micro reactor unit I
mids: Warp distuptor II Warp Scrambler II Stasis webbefier (Meta 4) 1MN Meta named MicroWarpDrive
High: Compact Light Missile Launcher I (3x)
have fun with this all gank and no tank thing
TLDR: Brave and a few other corps are recruiting people who are new and they help them with PVP buy getting them free ships and to learn how to PVP Public run fleets are good place to look at also (see above for who) Look at corps that have a lot of experience with PVP and don't be shy of asking more questions everywhere :P and remember that if you die but you had fun because you tried its the whole point of the game! |

I'm also fairly new and am wanting to fly Caldari initially.
Stupid noobie question- I found these fits on the Eve Uni wiki. Any suggestions as to which would be preferred? I'm seven days from the first fit and five from the second. Or is there a better one? So confused.

Missiles are awesome, but three of the game's five weapon systems involve Gunnery skills so prioritizing those will mean you'll be able to fly a wider selection of hulls sooner than if you prioritize missile skills.
There's nothin' like skating away from a fight with the hull on fire, some mods burned out and a cargohold full of loot.
See my terribad blog for stories.
