Fine. I'm going to post here anyway.
What I have learned from playing EVE is that when given the choice between being a good guy or a complete asshat in a sandbox game, most people will take the low road.
Mr Epeen
There are 86,400 seconds in a day. You just saved one of them by typing 'u' instead of 'you'.-á Congratulations, dumbass!

It's a very interesting point and a hot topic in social science at the moment.
I'm not sure if it's due to sandbox games but rather anonymity in general? The past 10 years have seen an explosion in connectivity that has been unprecedented and with that we seem to find accounts of trolling appearing in the news almost weekly. Have a look at this paper about trolling and how it is portrayed and potentially fuelled by the media.
http://jonathanbishop.xxx/Library/Documents/EN/docIJWBCPaper_MoralPanic.pdf
One of the interesting points here is the distinction between classical trolling of the 1990GÇÖs and prior and anonymous trolling of the 2010GÇÖs. It is suggested that classical trolling existed to point out the strengths and weaknesses of a character by a communities GÇÿeldersGÇÖ in a form of initiation so that they might integrate into that community more quickly. However, anonymous trolling as it is today has taken on a darker slant where people will abuse others for morbid personal enjoyment.
This raises a lot of questions about the mentality of internet users today and a shift from adopting others into ones community to pushing people away.

Eve has certainly created a lot of distrust in it's players. But I would agree that it's a valuable life lesson... Not quite sure how we would present this in schools though lol. |

i wouldn't say distrust. just awareness that not everyone has the best intentions. So you have to approach things cautiously.
is it paranoia if they ARE out to get you?

I'd love to hear some more details on this and I'm sure there are people in our community that feel the same. We had a question posted last night about inflation in Eve online. Maybe with your background you could comment on that?

I see it a little differently. Sure, some people are natural pricks, but a lot of very nice people play dirty in Eve.
It's no different than little kids playing "cops and robbers...." somebody has to play the robbers, right? Does that make them an asshat?
I play both. I hang out ina certain pub channel and give away a lot of isk every day on my alt. I also keep this character in the channel. Everyone knowis its the samre person, I tell everyone that. I also tell them that ssab here is my evil incarnation, while said alt is my good guy. They get it, and they dont mind. It's pretend, andi ts fun playing BOTH sides imo.

Nicely said
Adding your own complex narrative is the bread and butter of sandbox and this is an example of it done well. I have to ask the question though, do you draw a line between 'playing the bad guy' and full on trolling as we discussed earlier (what I would call an asshat)?

One of my titles on ssab here used to be "Elite Troll" but we ran out of room on the titles so it's gone now .
I have on occasion trolled deliciously well, as well as played probably the greatest prank of my life, which I will share with you, been wanting to post it for a while anyway.
First, I provoked a certain Spectre Fleet FC into rage. There was a mail sent out on the mailing list detailing a T1 T2T frig free for all. I love frig free for alls! Almost won the last one. Apparently the organizer had to go in to work, so someone else took over. They changed to rules to no T2 frigs, but didnt send that update out on the mailing list, so I didnt know. Nobody going by what was said on the mailing list knew now that the game had changed.
I make 33 jumps to the system the event it is, and wait like 2 freakin hours for the new organizers to get the damn thing started. It's now a 2v2 bracket tournament. OK, whatever. Mine and my partners turn come up, we warp to the organizer and our opponents.. and an opponent says, "hey, thats a T2 frig yuoure in!"
Sooo after making 33 jumps, waiting2 hours, and NOT getting an update on the mailing list, I was pissed. So I told this guy about himself. Here is what it evolved into. No pics but NSFW if u know what I mean. Much mad, so emo.
http://pastebin.com/46jYGx4S
So I am now "That Guy" and omfg EEEEVVVVVVVERRRRRYONE Agrees! boo hoo
I'll make another post about my ultimate prank on my CEO.
Yeah, most ppl know evil ssab here to be a nice guy, but yeah, I do troll in game some. But again, I help a lot of ppl too. It's like Gnostic Dualism, my good deeds match up to my bad. Karma is thus balanced

This is an excellent point and I agree that Eve operating a single shard universe offers a range of lessons. Mixing people from around the world in one place helps to break down boundaries and can be used to develop language skills. |

Exactly, and no game AI can give you much the surprise and laugh a group of human players, with sometime motives far away from yours, can give you. Some AIs can be good but not as unpredictable than a human, at least for now. And yes I'm agree with you on your second part about communication; even if you play solo it is impossible by this way to be isolated from the others, one time or another you always begin to chat with other players and have fun. Like an immense and global chat room you can meet people from any point of the world (out of the Chinese who have their own server). |
