Over the last two years or so that I've been playing this game, the subject of war has both intrigued and confused me. EVE's economy and much of its player base revolves around the touchy subject. I mean, without those belligerent barbarians out there in null sec miners would have no protection, industrialists would have no one to sell to, and daytraders would have nothing to bid on. So, I ask, why is it that whenever I try to find a good source to ask questions about the business of war, the only reliable resources are those who are actually on the battlefield?
My main question is, why is there no defining work on how warfare works in EVE? In a game so steeped with lore, a game so dependent on warfare, shouldn't there be something to explain to new players the art of war?
I submit that we, the players, should compile our knowledge into a compendium of sorts on the subject of tactics, overlaying strategies, and just general fleet organization. Maybe, the work could set a precedent for informal rules which generals would be compelled to follow or risk a blow to their reputation, an EVE Geneva Convention, if you will. Rules would be included like: do not fire upon enemy mining vessels, do not shoot neutral parties that pose no threat to your fleet, or maybe even something about prohibiting certain practices during a siege.
This is just something which doesn't necessarily need to be carried out. But I believe that it would serve to better both the game and the players with its creation. |

If the corp you are in is not doing what you want to do and/or teaching about those things, you are in the wrong corp.

The Mittani has written about leading the conquest of a region in nullsec, something only a handful of people in eve have experience with:

I think there are just too many variables in eve. I haven't read the mittani thing in a few years, but if it's what I recall it has some interesting perspectives (such as never try to take over space owned by an ethinic corp/alliance - they fight to the last based on nationalistic pride making the endeavor much less cost effective than invading a non-ethnic aligned group). It's a good read and gives you some stuff to think about.
There are just so many variables in both the objectives and opponents involved, I would balk at any one person claiming to have all the answers for all situations. |

Sounds like rules me and my buddies had set on each other during the days of RTS over dial-up modem connections and expensive long-distance rates.
You can either use the same principles by Sun Tzu and analyze your battlefield, heaven, and the elements. The rest is each one's own unique strategy. In Eve, you have in your possession only what another has not yet risked to take from you. If you have nothing to take, there's little to fight over but petty visions that cannot be forcibly taken, just slowly corrupted by influence.
Stick your flag somewhere; Claim a home system and let's learn together, hm?
