I played a lot of games over my 2 decades of online gaming but this is the first game i find a community full of people after my own heart. People answering even the most silly questions without mocking in rookie help and then people like you, moving one step further and teaching how to fit ships, giving fitted ships instead of taking advantage of newbies or mocking them.
I know there isn't much i can do in return bu if there is a chance to return favor in any time, please let me know. |

I saw the offer for a free ship in my local yesterday from Mike Azariah but I just thought it was some kind of ploy to lure the greedy out for a gank. Looks like there is some that are generous in this game after all. Props to Mike Azariah ! |

I get accused of skulldeuggery by many folks BEFORE they get the ship. Some never dock and just yell at me, angrily.
I honestly am doing what I say I will do.

The fact that you had to articulate that out loud, rather than accept it as the obvious joke it is (PLEXes in the cargohold?!), is mildly disappointing

Great idea to help out newbros.
I joined your mailing list to check it out - i have a couple of friends joining the game soon.
I noticed that in the welcome letter you put your signature in as simply 'm'. Perhaps it would be an idea to put in your character name (link) it would give members a point of contact so they could send you queries?

I'm actually opposed to the idea of handouts for new players.
It doesn't help in the long run imho, and if anyone is going to survive in Eve, then they need to feel and become accustomed to it's brutality.
This char is new, but I've been floating around New Eden for a couple of months and learning the hard way. This is THE ONLY way to learn and enjoy EVE.
Having a smiling mysterious benefactor turn up with a truck full of goodies like some kind of space themed Santa is not really what Eve is about, and will, at best, only hold players for a short while longer before they inevitably quit because the game is not for them. It only delays the harsh reality of the game universe.
Surely Eve is about perseverance, about learning from your mistakes and slowly making your way up the ranks..it's not about mum and dad holding your hand. |

Yup, I meet a few folks who disagree with what I do. And that is fine. I, personally, don't think that a T1 frigate or dessie is seriously lead to a destruction of the game experience nor do I think I am alone in this opinion.
Holding the players for a short time longer IS part of my goal. Give them more time to interact,to learn, to 'get' the game. The harsh reality is out there but so is SRP, social interaction and the realization that there are many other people playing the game with them.
Oh, Santa is a slacker, only comes around once a year. The Bus does a minimum of one complete lap a week, hitting all 12 career systems.
This week being a slight exception

Anyone playing eve properly can obtain those thing themselves in a matter of a couple of days. If they are so eager to accept them as a gift rather than working for it, I would question why they are playing in the first place.
If they do the career agents then they'll be floating about in their own destroyer all fitted out (possibly not correctly), in no time..AND they will have at least a basic understanding of what the game is about, in fact there's argument there for making the agents obligatory for new players.
I commend the spirit behind what you do, there's no denying that a friendly face or two is sorely needed early on in the universe given how many cold hearted killers there are out there!
Eve is, from what I see in the forums, at a point in it's life where the vets are concerned about it becoming something 'Less' in order to attract new blood...the kind of blood that wants instant gratification like the consoles give, if we encourage this 'quick fix' 'gimmee now' attitude, surely it is detrimental to what many people are trying to preserve.
If we are to assume that many new bloods like to be given a free destroyer and some goodies..then why not just give them one to start with? or a bundle of isk to spend on whatever they like?
It's erosion, all be it unintentional, and will only serve to encourage similar activity by the developers.
Skill injectors and the like are getting bad press, being able to buy yourself into an advantageous position with minimal effort is already out there. Encouraging it is the surest way to dissolve Eve slowly over time into something that would be more at home on a console.
I'm new to the game, but not new to gaming..I was born before ANY of it existed, pre- spectrum, pre zx81 Hell, even pre-Binatone! so although I may not be an Eve expert, I do know 'unique' or 'different' when I see it, and I know how rare these qualities are in today's gaming world.
If you have something truly different like Eve, you protect it fiercely because it will not last long once the babying begins.
By all means...pod a newbro...explain what he did wrong, discuss fittings and skills and perhaps even reimburse him for his/her loss..this goes on now, and is beneficial to the universe.
But direct handouts will never be a benefit in the long run.
IMHO.

I do not question as to why people play, I am just happy to have them join in.
Have you seen the destroyer fits they hit space with after the career missions? Part of the reason why I give fitted ships is so they get some ideas of possible ways to set up a ship. I never give isk for this reason as they learn nothing from it. Give a man a fish etc.
One of the conditions for receiving a ship is social. Speaking up and watching local and rookie chat is, thus rewarded.
As to this being reaction to declining numbers I started the Bus almost 2 years ago. Just about the time of the This Is Eve video influx of players. Do I want people to stay? Hell yes.
I also have a mailing list that points the players in the direction of things that they can do such as NPSI roams,Eve Uni classes or in game events as well as discuss the fitting choices made in Bus fits. Learn, engage, play, don't be afraid to undock because it is the only ship that you have. THIS is what I'm about. THIS is what the Bus is about.

I see Mike in Trossere speaking to new players, answering questions, helping those who want help.
You're a good guy, and for many new players the first person they speak to in EVE. You make a wonderful first impression.

For all the new players out there keep an eye on your local chat in rookie systems and in rookie help. Don't be turned off by the enormous bounty his friends put on him or the creepy portrait his daughter made him (sorry Mike), he's a good guy who will be happy to give you a good ship to get started off right in Eve. |

I've been in a system when the bus comes through and I was utterly amazed at the number of people who completely ignored him and the free stuff he offered. If he was just giving handouts he'd send isk to everyone in local, but instead the new players have to prove they want it, have to prove they're engaged in looking for opportunities and willing to go the extra mile for the deal. That's the lesson that is most important about the bus imo, the fact that there are plenty of great chances to make your fun and fortune in Eve but you have to be willing to extend yourself to find them. |
