hi, im new to this game, slowly learning about things, and i realized i need some source of income. I dont rly like mining or scanning much, i do enjoy battles very much. I like doing missions but as a pause from them, and doing somethnig different, i read about ratting and tried it > loved it. I do have some questions about tactics:
1. AS far i see 2 ways of doing this, long range or up close. I went to 0.2 sec space engaged some pirates in battlecruisers (at least i think they were in that type of ship). Now i tried that with caldari merlin frigate and gallente catalyst as close type of combat and in caldari corax with missiles as long range type of combat. Now i dont have much money yor skill trained since im rly new , but i did have sort of succes to some extent. Now about the tactics:
1.1 Whit catalyst pirate ship almost melted in front of me, couldnt hit me, i almost didnt have any damage even on my shield. The problem, second encounter i was up against 3 pirates. So i approched one of them but while i was orbiting him on 500m the other 2 were around 5-12km from me shooting me without a problem. I barely escaped the encounter, healed back up and tried again. This time i approched them on 35km till one of them locked me, lurked him away from other 2, but all the time i was lurking him away and then when i tried to get close to him he was shooting me from afar. So by the time i got to him i was destroyed. So my question what tactics do you use when encoutering more then 1 pirate and you need to get close ( ratting bigger ships that yourself since they have hard time hitting you) ?
1.2 With corax i had missiles equiped with around 40km range. The first encounter i was in, i approched them, one locked me, lurked him away, tried sort of kitting him, but as soon as i start shooting him i realized he is shooting me back with missiles also. Killed me in no time. Here my question is if i want ratting in this type of ship (corax) sort of mid range (50km) should i just avoid fights whit pirates that also use long range missiles and railguns? or is there some trick. On that note can you see anywhere what max distance of weapons pirate uses is?
Thx for all help |

Hi Mate,
Lots of questions there! I can help with some (maybe) but not all of them.
I assume you are 'belt ratting' - that is, ratting in asteroid belts rather than in cosmic anomolies. The way to make big bucks from ratting is to ultimately end up in the anomolies as they have lots of rats in them, but that might be a bit out of your league at the moment, as you would want a fairly tanky ship to go there!
If you want to rat in a Corax then fit for range, fit an afterburner, and orbit at speed. Try to keep your signature radius minimised (sig radius will increase substantially if you fit too many shield extenders or use a micro warp drive). This will minimise the damage that the rats apply to you. Do not travel towards them directly always try to keep at an angle.
You may actually be better in a T2 frigate in due course, like a Hawk or a Retribution.
Ultimately, you want to be doing this in a cruiser (such as a Vexor (T1) or an Ishtar (T2) - they are drone boats but currently the best for ratting).
Hope this helps. Can I suggest you do some additional research. I have always found the Eve Uni wiki to be a good place to start: http://wiki.eveuniversity.org/Ratting_101
Cheers,

Use the directional scanner to give you warning of impending doom at the hands of the locals.

Any system that you rat in will have a static pirate faction that with very few exceptions will always be the same regardless of belt rat or anom . So you should be fitting a faction specific tank for the rats you are going up against.
http://www.ogrank.com/content/view/698/59/
That link will help with giving you an idea of what resists you should be fitting.
Also the lower the sec status the harder the rats in general there is some RNG variation in the spawns but as a whole this is true so if you are having a rough time in a 0.2 try a 0.3 or maybe even play around in 0.5 if you just want to work out rat tactics until you feel comfortable that you have things worked out then go to low sec.
The kitting thing in general works well as you have seen but not always. High motion is very effective at reducing incoming damage but also reduces the damage that you apply if you are using turrets. So yes if you are using missiles or drones a good tactic is to keep them at range and try to keep your angular / transversal velocity up.
Just a note on operating in low sec. Low sec is probably the most dangerous space in game more so than null even. If you plan on ratting in low sec you will come up against PvP. Other players can tell from the directional scanner what belt you are in and if you have wrecks laying around they will know you are ratting and come after you.
Also if you want to kite the NPCs and you plan on staying the the same few systems you can make tactical bookmarks at the belts. Rats seem to spawn close to the warp in point or WiP for short. So say for example you wanted to keep the rats at 40 Kms you could make a bookmark 40-50 Kms off from the WiP at each belt and instead of warping to the belt directly warp to the bookmark so you are already at your desired range.
Like other's have said you'll want to read up on various ratting guides so you can understand how faction and hauler spawns work also you will eventually come up against rats that will warp off mid combat so at some point you'll have to fit a point to handle that as well.
And if you want to get into the PvP and like belt ratting those can go together well especially if you can find friends that like the same thing. However people that are more PvP minded than myself would be better to advise you on that.
As far as progression goes with faction or T2 cruisers you can easily belt rat in null and some T2 cruisers like the Ishtar can even do high level anoms with no problem so you can do everything without getting into large hulls. |
