Hullo. At approximately 10:14 GMT this morning i almost jumped out of my seat hearing a strange klaxon emanating from my PC speakers which lasted about 10 seconds and was pretty loud. The only things on my computer that were running at the time were EVEmon, the EVE launcher and Firefox with the only tab open was viewig the EVE forums.
Upon being startled i looked around the windows i had up and nothing showed anything out of the ordinary.
After thinking about it for a second or two i thought it must have come from the EVE launcher itself perhaps as some warning about the server coming down shortly.
Please for my sanity can someone confirm this too?
Thanks! |

Did your ship blow up? sounds like a shields/armour/structure is low alert. The launcher shouldn't make any sounds as it doesn't need to. What was the browser windows containing? (lol pron :P)
I don't always have a signature; but when I do, it doesn't say anything at all

I wasn't in EVE, just the launcher was up. The only tab on the browser was the EVE-O forums.
I just want to know what the strange alert sound was about, i've never heard such a thing before. Afterwards i even checked my PC temperatures as perhaps it was some warning about overheating perhaps. Nope that was fine..

Have you ever used Internet Explorer for anything other than downloading another browser?
Have you ever downloaded and run an executable file from an unverified source?

Crazy! Did you have your mobilefone switched on and lying right besides your speakers?
Those things were made by the devil, and the NSA.... probably just the NSA as most of them are stealth bomber black. But nevertheless they make strange sounds in your speakers when they feel like nobody is watching.
Stupidity should be a bannable offense.

Yes, magnetic and electrical disturbances can lead to speaker feedback. It sounds like a loud electrical hum, across a few wavelengths of different octaves. Fairly deep in overall tone usually but can vary.
If your speakers are already within an ion or magnetic field setting them close to feedback levels, you may not notice it until some minor disturbance sets em over the edge. If this is the case, you can usually tell by waving your hand near the speakers while they are on and checking for minor sound disturbances from only your hand. Also you may be able to feel the static. I experienced this with a pair of speakers that apparently had rather lousy electrical insulation.

Reminds me of this gal who was bashful about checking her phone and would try to hide it, but the speakers gave her away every time.

I once had a pair of those little headphones for my mobile phone, you know, those little things you jam right into your ear. And everytime I got to close to a cell tower, I could feel the lots of little electric jolts prickling in my ear canals...

From my 90s IT experience, most repeated warning tones that show up unexpectedly come from the Mobo itself, they are known as the POST beeps. They are a legacy of yesteryear and to my knowledge still used today, though it-¦s been QUITE a while since I heard them.
Most of them come as warnings. Tone sequence usually tells you the error (long tone repeated after short ones, intermittent short ones or intermittent long ones with shorts) and if this happened during a hot use, and here considering it came from the MOBO and not due to other causes (that others have told about in the thread already), they might indicate several things, usually Hot Temps/ Severe Ram Error and assorted malfunctions.
Most modern BIOS firmware have their speaker tones to supplement POST ones , and these can be enabled/disabled from the BIOS MENU.
Hope this helps :)
Cheers!

If so, it's likely your phone, as a lot of them now are required to receive Amber Alerts and other FCC-controlled emergency messages.
If not, possibly your anti-virus (or some scamware pretending to be anti-virus) alerting you to a possible problem (or non-problem in the case of scamware).

low-quality speakers (ergo not shielded) that have long wires (5.1 for example) can actually "tune in" radio signals. I have a 5.1 mitsai set and I can actually listen to radio thru them even when the computer is off

Some speakers can pickup radio signals when they aren't connected to a power supply, such is their sensitivity to the waves and ability to pickup power from their environment. In these cases, sometimes plugging them into proper ground is the only way to silence them, save for removing the magnet.
