Hello,
Back in the 2006 ish 2009 ish area you had alot more pirates that tended to reside in low-sec. It was less about killing ships and more about the ransoming. Since then, I have not seen ransoming as much. Mainly for 2 reasons. I went to live full-time in 0.0 and stopped pirating. Plus I feel that people care more about KB stats these days than isk potential. Now I fully admit that there are probably still some outfits out there that ransom but I definitely do not see it as much or hear about it as much.
I have seen it all in Eve. I have done mining, worm holes, 0.0 alliance PvP, FW, and low-sec PvP. Right now I am at a state in the game where if you come into my system of residence or if I see you . I, my alt, or my alliance will over take your ship and put to good use whatever we find. I don't care who you are or what your agenda is. If I see you running sites I will scan you down and take your site. If I see you in anoms, I will stalk you and pounce when you least expect it.
Although I no longer ransom people, live in low-sec, or have a -10 security status. I do consider myself to be more of a pirate and less of a "PvPer". I guess they are one in the same in the grand scheme of things but I feel a PvPer is more of your typical Eve sov veteran that x's up for fleets and follows the masses. There are also the small scale solo pvpers but again I do not classify those types as pirates.
So I must ask, what defines a pirate in Eve-Online in your opinion? |

Ooooh this is gonna be a good thread. A lot of people will say piracy is dead OP. And it sort of is. Some of us are trying to bring it back, i.e. honoring ransoms, 1v1s, givin dem gfs, and showing mercy every now and then.
Example. Some duder got told by his "friends" that he'd be safe taking his Orca through lowsec.
Yeah..
We rescued him, repped him, and escorted him to highsec while getting his "friends" on comms to yell at them for being ****. My corp doesn't bother killing indies or miners in lowsec cause, well, no sport in it. Nul sec we'll ransom them and anybody else. But the biiiig problem is this.
If you try to ransom, and they buy time, you're likely sitting there as a fleet comes to you to dunk you. Or your target was bait, lights a cyno, or asks a fleet to jump in, etc, etc.
Piracy has changed because of the player base. It's doable, but no where near as straight forward as it used to be.

Well I always think I pirate in Eve, to make ISK. But have fun doing so.
This is either through shooting ships, extortion or ransom. But I will honour whatever deal I make.

What has honoring 1v1 fights, or escorting orcas out of lowsec to do with piracy?
I'd define piracy as attacking other ships with the intend of getting ISK/items from them. Doesn't matter if you do it via ransom or looting their wreckage. If you just do it for the killmail/tears and the loot is only a nice bonus for you, you're not really a pirate.
Ganking industrials/freighters in highsec for profit is a good example for piracy. |

Honorable pvp versus dishonerebu super blobban when you coulda had a good fight, or taking a ransom and killing them anyway. That kinda ****.
Also lol @ ganking in highsec being piracy.

From Websters: Pirate is someone who attacks and steals from a ship at sea (space in this application). Nothing about honor or such. That is up to each pirate. It is the attacking and stealing that defines.
In EVE can really only be practiced in Low or Null. Suicide ganking in High Sec is just terrorism. |

No. Ganking in hi-sec is exactly what you described - "attacks and steals from a ship at sea (space in this application). Nothing about honor or such" that's exactly it.
It's all about fighting ppl to ransom them, or to gather valuable loot/cargo they carry. Also, being a pirate means it's your main source of income.
Thing why piracy almost not exists in eve is that you can get more/easier without such a risk. Easy as it is. |

You're wrong about suicide ganking being terrorism, I've highlighted the part of your own post that proves it to be piracy; although in some instances it could be considered to be an unscrupulous business practice if the suicide gankers are being sponsored by people who produce ships.

High sec ganking can be very profitable. You can make 10s of billions patrolling shipping lanes and ganking fat industrials.
In fact, high sec piracy is the most profitable and prevalent kind. |

I live in low sec, and I consider myself a pirate.
I shoot people for profit, I shoot people for fun, I shoot people who don't want to be shot, I shoot people who do want to be shot, and I'll occasionally shout "Yarr!!!" in local when doing so. While I haven't found a suitable occasion to be yelling "Avast, ye mateys!" yet, I'm pretty sure that cry will come along at some point.
I rarely accept ransoms (offer too low, I just shoot you, offer too high and i start wondering what you're carrying, so I shoot you...) but when I do I honour them. I don't think honouring ransoms (or any kind of honour, or lack thereof) is a defining characteristic of a pirate though. |

Basically if you support yourself by way of taking other's things you are a pirate.
Where it is done is irrelevant.
It has nothing to do with honor or how you conduct your business.

No it isn't. It is a comparison of what I define piracy as given that I experienced it, as opposed to now. It is past experiences critical to identifying what piracy is, as per the OP.

I define it based on how it was. I don't believe the majority of what people consider 'piracy' is piracy. Are you saying that forming opinions of something based on previous experiences and using that as reference to construct a dialogue is wrong? If so, there are a few people who'd like a word with you.

Wrong. The OP asks what defines a pirate in YOUR opinion. Not based on present factors. He simply asks, what. And to me, what defines a pirate in Eve are the values now snuffed by most who call themselves "pirates."

My corp (re)started basically by doing wormhole piracy. We scout out different wormholes and once we find a good target we'll put some cloaky ships inside, watch the residents and kill their ships. When we ask for ransoms people are skeptical but then they see we won't leave. They stop running their sites and we run them instead. They refuse to pay? We start taking out pocos and undefended towers. Still no ransom? We hit their main tower or find someone who can. In the end they either pay the ransom or they lose everything in the wormhole.
