Hi everybody,
The new atmospheric environments for asteroid fields are live on Singularity.
The effect is comprised of 3 components: God rays, fog and particle rocks. The particle rocks are non-minable and available for Medium shader quality and above. There is a difference between DX9 and DX11 so please state if you have chosen to run the DX9 client in your feedback. The Fog gives a sense of distance and is available for High shader quality. The God rays are similar to the effect visible during incursions and is available for High shader quality.
They can be disabled in the Display & Graphics menu under Effects > Asteroid Environments.
Please post feedback on the new asteroid environments here.

The Asteroid Belts look amazing!
The Ice belt felt overdone.

I didn't have much fog or particle rocks in the two belts I checked out but the God rays looked great. I couldn't stay on long and I'll have to check out more later.
You're doing some really good work. The Exequror is beautiful and very Scifi, no need to stop now!
Yesterday's weirdness is tomorrow's reason why.

Is a frame rate of 35-40FPS with a GTX980 running at 4k res and full graphics to be expected?

That does sound a bit low. What is your performance like in incursions?
I forgot to mention that the God rays are off by default and can be enabled in the Display and Graphics menu under Effects > Light Rays.

The incursion light ray effects dissapear if you warp off a grid that has the new belt effects. |

Looks good, I kind of wish they had a bit more dust and less huge rock chunks though. Light rays look very cool, I like that effect
No noticeable performance slowdown for me, still get 100-130 FPS at 1440p with 2x 970s |

What's the intended effect when all asteroids in a belt have been depleted? Will the environment despawn entirely? |

Looks good and works fine with a 1gig card (100 bucks).
Suggestion:
Use for planetary disks.
Similar effect for debrit fields or ruins, allthough you would use wires, shrapnel, remains, and other wreckage. |

I went to a belt, and found it to look about like it did on TQ. I checked the settings, and turned on the asteroid environment. That changed nothing, until I warped to another belt. Remember that for anyone testing this: You may need to warp to another belt to see the effect of a setting change.
In the first belt without the effects my FPS was 30, about normal for my MacBook Pro. (Note: for some reason 30 on a Mac is very smooth with no slide show effect). With the asteroid effects turned on the FPS was 1.7. Yes, less than 2, and thus unusable. I had the settings all set to low or off, except for texture and shader, which were set to medium. I set everything high just to see how bad it would be, but the FPS got no worse.
So for me these new effects are utterly wasted effort. I will need to turn them off.
Other information: The FPS in station, in warp, and near the outside of stations all appear to be 50% to 100% improved. Good job there.
Late 2010 17" MacBook Pro, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, 512 MB, DX9. I run with multithreaded open GL off, interval 4.

I tested quickly on my mac (quad i7 Hackintosh running OSX Mavericks, GTX760 4GB) and framerates were excellent. Does the Mac version use OpenGL equivalents to DirectX 11? I will reboot into the Windows side later today and try to compare. Framerates were 60 - 90 for me.
One thing that I noticed was that the particles seem very large in size, and really dense. I was thinking they would be smaller and more "dust-like". Right now they seem like a procedurally duplicated pattern, rather than a natural phenomena. If you randomized the larger particles with much smaller dust particles, that were so small you only see them in detail if they're close to the ship, then it should look more natural and not too cluttered. Also, on the mac, zoomed out from the belt, the particles look "grey" and don't really blend the scene's color.
I will take some screenshots after work. |

Cool I guess. Can you add a post processing effect like a blur around the 'roids at the levels of detail where you're farther zoomed out to replace the clouds? Looks a bit weird that they're just gone when you zoom out.
The UI is still bad.

I like the new fields a lot, though I kinda expected to see a different fog colour for ice belts compared to ore belts, and possibly have some rotation on the particle rocks, but I would suspect that would grind the framerate to a halt if combined with the volumetric lighting.
Anyway, I'd love to see more variation, such as
- Fog density depending on security status
- Fog colour depending on belt type (ice / ore specific, rarity)
- ..and on top of that some variation range within a single system

The light rays look awesome, but the asteroid sprite blob looks terribad, esp from a distance, just a blob of dots.
Also found out that when I turned off the asteroid sprite blob, the light rays went with them even though it was still turned on.
So for anyone testing this, in order to see the light rays you need to also have asteroid sprite blob turned on... but if you just want to see the asteroid sprite blob, you only need to select asteroid sprite blob and can leave light rays unselected. |

DX 9: Steady 60 FPS through normal travel. When decelerating into a belt it drops to ~55 FPS then rises back to 60. Looking towards the sun and away from the sun stays 60 FPS.
DX11: Steady 60 FPS through normal travel. When decelerating into a belt it drops to ~30 FPS then goes to ~45 FPS. Looking away from the sun in a belt FPS goes to 60. Looking towards the sun in a belt it drops to 30-45 FPS. Never going above 45 FPS. Tested on multiple asteroid belts. Happens in all of them.

With max settings, the effects just look off -- especially the close ones. They objects don't feel like they are correctly lit.
I would also recommend varying the sizes of the objects a bit more and allowing them to be spaced further apart and reducing somewhat the overall number of them.

Unchecking the option mentioned above does not disable the particle rocks

Looks nice, finally CCP did something with effects that didn't shoot my GPU in the head and leave it for dead (thinking mission clouds).
+1 for both ice and rocks.

Unchecking the option mentioned above does not disable the particle rocks. The only way to do it is to reduce the shader quality to low which makes everything else look like cr4p.
u probably will have to leave grid and come back to make the changes work (or restart client)

Any setting change may well require warping to a new belt to see.

Took a quick tour tonight. Posted a few pics here: http://interstellarprivateer.wordpress.com/2015/01/02/sisi-proteus-asteroid-effects/
I like the effects. These were shot with all effects on except for camera shake and Anti-Aliasing. Win 7, 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon 6800/1GB
I think you really missed an opportunity to dress up the Shattered planets! Would be great if you could do this around them as well. It would really add to the feel.

It's my impression or the debris fields at the ice belts are made of dark, rocky bodies? Shouldn't they be made of white stuff, like small chunks of ice?
