Loads of people maxing out skills and setting up queues to be "PVP GODS"....yet will never actually learn to fly well, and only log in to update it all. It's the disease that plagues mmos. The strive to get end game so you can walk around and flaunt it with other elite players who are so much better than the noobs..all the while, never actually enjoying the game for what it's worth.
A waste of money I say. Sp are a means to an end. If you play to queue then you have done it very, very, wrong.
Nothing funnier than a 2005 player asking if they should fly an incursus or Tristan, or if rails are better than blasters. Etc, etc,
Back in 2005, frigates were kind of a joke. And they surely were NOT what people aspired to fly, or an end goal. Many of those players are very sad that EVE, the most exotic game ever built, has evolved into 'Frigates Online'.
It IS A GAME, so when it stops being fun, I think people move on, or quit playing. And Battleships, Frigates, Hulks, or whatever will always attract different player base. I'm not saying one way is right or wrong. There is no right or wrong. 15 bucks a month, 50 cents a day, for any kind of fun (even skilling) is still a good deal.

I just remapped to Intel / Mem on Rain6638, and queued up a bunch of skills that were injected and untrained. I ended up leaving the client open all day, and Aura's "Skill Training Completed" has chimed out of the speakers and my headphones several times an hour.
I'd still rather not suffer through core skills again, but it was kind of nice. Tempting to make new characters. Almost.

What can you say about your addiction to SP?
Being a 6 month old newbie, I'm still climbing that great festering mountain of skillpoints known as "core fitting skills" on both my main and PvP alts, around six months is queued up on each.
My alt might be ready to undock in something slightly more lethal than an Epithal sometime around Christmas.
Maybe. With a few notable exceptions, I've taken that alt down the path of "skill to V only those skills that are prerequisites for something I want to do". The only real exceptions are some of those "really seriously useful to have at V" skills, like Thermodynamics.
My SP addiction seems to come in the form of +3 implants. I really don't like being without them for very long. Even if I just plug in the ones relevant to the skill I'm currently training, it's rare for my main not to have them. Of course, being the newbie, I tend to die a lot and thus spend a lot on +3s.

Another addict to SP checking in. I really want my character to have level V in every single skill. I know that won't happen unless CCP makes huge changes in the training times to skills, but i'm going to keep my accounts subscribed because I know my character is always improving even while I am not playing. |

I like the passive character progression. A long time ago when I didn't have much i was responsible for I would have hated eve. I could have no-life's as much as I wanted but never felt anything different come out of it. I've tried to get friends to play, but they seem to think it's far too passive. I can see that and have even felt that way... Until I started creating my own content. I really love finishing something like racial cruiser 5 as it opens up so much to do. 12d from gallente cruiser and 17d from Caldari. Then I need to go finish all my medium weapon specs for those that I use on a regular basis. At 44m so I'm really happy with my toon. |

I've been giving this subject some thought and I have come to a different conclusion than I first posted (or maybe it's schizofrenia...).
As this toon is nearing the end of its training (still millions of SP to go, but whatever), I find SP gets less interesting. Anything I am training now maybe adds a few percent to the overall stats, but doesn't add experience in a meaningful way; not with my current, casual gameplay.
In other games, I have a tendency start over again, again and again, just because the character or gameplay didn't work out, or because I just feel like it.
I will keep this toon, ofcourse, but I am contemplating rolling a new one and start from scratch, just to see how things work out.

Personally, I am not. I am addicted to being able to fly as many things as possible and enjoy the diversity of the Eve ship line up. This means that while I can fly almost any sub capital ship- I am not really 'perfect' at many.
The real issue with 'all V's' and less than that comes down to fleet planning. Fleet doctrines usually assume all V's not out of 'more is better' but because it allows an FC to plan his tactics accordingly. For example, a kiting fleet will assume you have the speed and agility to keep up with the rest of the fleet- the entire fleet is hobbled by the player with sub-par skills. Another example is in drone fleets, where the range and tracking are critical- and the difference between T1 and T2 drones can spell the difference between hitting a target and being out of range.
An FC (and doctrine developer) will base their decisions more on the potential of a given fleet, assuming all characters have maxed skills- than anything else. "I have a dozen megathrons and four scimitars...I can tank this amount, and deal this amount of damage...at this range". That allows the FC to decide what fights to take, and which to avoid, as well as how to proceed during each encounter.
For the solo pilot, the drive for 'perfect' skills is even more pronounced, since every 2 or 3% of something can literally spell the difference between victory and being podded. When flying alone, you have to squeeze every last ounce of performance from a fitting, and sub-max skills are always an obvious hole in the dyke that needs plugged.
A bit of a double edged sword. FC's and fleets need you to perform at least as well as everyone else- while playing solo means that sub-par skills are a critical liability you can't hide from thru sheer numbers.

Approaching 250 million sp now and i'm also over 200 skills at lvl 5.....Hardly really play much and have the skill queue mapped to the end of the year, with not much left to aim for, so the game has gotten kind of stale for a long while now.
Why do I play?...I don't have a clue anymore, and it's more of a chat channel with graphics where I keep in touch with friends really...:P |

For some years i was addicted to optimize my SP/hour, since the birth of this character i trained only the skills that suited my atributes. Sadly, i lost that feeling arround 2 years ago.
Probably it's because a mix of reasons, less time to play, almost perfect sub-capital character, industrial character and market character, plus a long game stagnation (little xpac content). |

While I do enjoy the occasional level 5 skill pop on my main, I've actually had more fun lately with optimizing a new alt's skill plan to get the most oomph possible out of his low SP.
The goal for my alt is to only fly T1 frigs and destroyers and max out every relevant skill for those.

I used to be addicted to wasted SP, especially when there were clone costs, but now the clone costs have gone away, and clone death means nothing (unless you are carry expensive implants) then I am not as obsessive about my SP. I have queued up about a years worth of stuff to skill up, but I will dip in and move things to the top as I see fit.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain... Time to die.

On my main, I spent 2 years training Gunnery to V. Then after one release, they added Doomsday Devices to Gunnery. So, even though I can't use them, I spent over 60 days training DD to V. The first 4 levels were fine. Level 4 to 5 was 57 days....

About to complete my 4th large gun specialisation to lvl 5 now (1 week away), with 2 more left of these left to go......They're 26 days a pop for a pathetic 2% increase, but that's what I'm left with training wise....Minimal gains and huge training times basically.
Just about to hit 30 million sp in gunnery alone though...:) |

You are totally not alone on that. This char is my third char and she hasn-¦t seen space longer than 15minutes. She is training complete SoE skills before leaving station for real. So far she has 247 days in queue but whenever a skill finishes she gets a full queue again. 7mil SP with 7skills at V sounds a bit stupid to most people but since I don-¦t need her she can just train for another year or so before she is going out. On my two other chars it-¦s not that extreme but I am slowly training stuff up to V some just for the sake of it. There are more efficient ways to train your char for sure but well, I have time and I am patient so no problem. |

and yes, addicted to lvl 5's. Currently training every missile and gunnery skill to 5, which is about 4 months of training left. After that i have no freaking clue what to train as ive pretty much coverd every single combat related skill then.
