Heh, I was on voice-chat once while eating grapes and a living one crawled across my mouth all of a sudden. Needless to say the other person turned down the volume of his headphones. And no, I¦m not an arachnophobic. Just not fond of stuff crawling over my mouth. ________________________________

Well if you'd eaten it it might have come off the total that crawl into your open mouth, and you swallow, whilst you are sleeping. Apparently the average is 3 per person in a lifetime. ___________________________________________________ Serenity Prime Is Recruiting |

The amount-of-spiders-eaten-each-year-thing is a legend, not the truth.
Scientificly, JUST HOW can one determine how much spiders we eat in our sleep each year! How can this be tested? It can't, we can only assume.
Here's the icky part though:
a) that you can add up all the spider parts found in typical foodstuffs (e.g., vegetables, rice, hamburger buns) until you reach the mass of a spider and call that one spider,
b) that all spiders are as large as medium-size tarantulas, when in fact most of the spiders eaten each year are significantly smaller, and
c) that spiders that crawl into your mouth while you are asleep don't count as having been eaten.
But without making such wild assumptions, one can only say that the average person eats 10-12 whole spiders a year, and some two to three pounds of miscellaneous spider parts. goodnight!

I like spiders. They help get rid of those damned annoying insects. There's one in the corner of my wall right now, near the ceiling. Big one. I think I shall call it Shelob --------------------------------------------------------------------

in portugal, supersticion says that having spiders in house = money.
don't care tbh. spiders here are harmless. good to hunt them flys and other insects that are usually a PITA. -------

I think my fear of spiders REALLY started when I was little, I ran into my bedroom all happy about something (can't recall what) and I lept up to switch my light on and sitting over the switch was an ENORMOUS spider, it was too late to stop my hand though and my palm sailed through the air and destroyed the spider, however, it's legs coiled up and around my fingers and it really scared me and I stood there shaking my hand and it just wouldn't come off and I was screaming... I was terrified.. Bloody spider..

Black widows can certainly kill a healthy person, unlike what the pet store owner stated.
I was in Mexico and a woman on my team got bitten by a black widow. She felt flu-ish for the first two days and then developed a lacy red rash on the leg adjoining the foot that got bitten. The doctors in Ensenada did nothing about the venom the following day after they diagnosed the problem. The next night we decided to leave earlier than we had intended because of a lack of improvement in her condition and continued spread of her rash. If we had waited another twelve hours to get back to the US, she would not have lived. Doctors in the US were surprised they did not have to amputate any appendages in the area of the bit. The woman spent several weeks recovering in the hospital from the bite.
Black widows are regarded with much fear here in the US.
Spiders in general, deadly and non-deadly, alike, I regard with a measure of awe. They can be incredibly beautiful in their variety of shapes, sizes and colors. I prefer to remove spiders that pose no threat to me than an irritating bite. -----------------------------------------------
