Ten months ago the ship painting pilot program was introduced (recall the details here), and now is time to look ahead what we have learned, what we want to improve and where we are heading to.
Behold the Super Kerr-Induced Nanocoatings aka SKINS!
We would like to make ship painting more permanent: once your character has purchased a specific SKIN for a ship, you can use that SKIN regardless if you lose ships that have been decorated with that SKIN. A ship loss will not lead to the loss of the ship SKIN being used on that ship.
Read CCP FoxFour's latest dev blog A Glimpse into the Future of Ship Skins for all the interesting details regarding SKINS, why we introduce them and what we can do with them in the future!

Exciting! I really appreciate not having to lose rigs to apply a skin to a current ship. I love my Interbus Moros, but was annoying getting new capital rigs when I put it on.
Keep up the good work!

What is the plan with the NPC dropped BPC eg: Ferox Guristas Edition? Currently those are ~worthless~ and with this change it might led to right click "trash it".

There's more good than bad with this. I'd rather people use them and not fear losing them than have them just to keep in a pos for ship spinning goodness.
This adds more value to their use vs how they are currently used.

So I know the plan is to have this be per character to start with but having option for SKINS to be per account would be nice as well as having to buy something you already have over and over again is least than appealing really. Maybe have it that you can get them for just one char but have a per ship class license kit to expand it to the whole account might work well. That way you can try with one character and if you decide you don't really like it it was less costly. Also ability to transfer a licensed skin from one char to another on the same account might be useful. The idea of SKINS based on what corp or alliance you are in are also something I think might be popular. Just some thoughts I had.

It's a real great and long missing idea. So please make it happen, that corporation can buy/rent a license to use their colors and signs/icons at BPOs for corp-built ships.
You predefined the usable colors and symbols for corp-signs. So you could be able to create ship SKINs for that too.
One of the next steps could be to allow a set of skins for each visible module outside of ships. So corp-built modules could be SKINned too. I know, this will need another kind of saving modules in databases like done for ships too. |

I have been pondering the implication of a more advanced and highly customizable ship skin system. I would Love to see it grow to the point of every ship having a range of skin design options with a large color pallet. I feel in this respect players would feel more depth to the game with having their ships reflect them personally.
In this regard I would love to see the skin system become an Open paint option in which players can redo the ships look entirely and even import certain images like corp logos and symbols. I know I would have a Forest green and black Yin-yan on all my ships.
Of course Its up to the devs what they want to add onto the game. |

So, if you say direct trade with a person a skinned ship, when they get the ship it'll have the default skin if they don't have the license? How does this apply to ships left unoccupied in a POS and someone without a license for the skin boards it?
I sometimes trade ships between alts so thought I'd ask. |

Here is my feedback: Its awesome and its everything I could dream of, coming from a skin system.
The deciding factor is the fact that they are not destroyed with the ship. I don't want to invest any real money into something destructible, but if its permanent then you have my wallet \o/
Now we're waiting on corporation-made skins and logos on ships! :D

When we will be able do add racing stripes? Or just colorize the ship?

If you can sell them - as stated in the DevBlog - you can just contract them to your other char.

What about the immersion of painting the ship? The old system made more sense, you would have to buy the skin and use the industry tab to paint the ship.
With the new system you buy the license, press apply and and this will magically paint your ship? |

Lore ish stuff:
You have a coat of paint on your ship. This paint is made up of nanoparticles, which can be charged to turn different colours, in different patterns.
The license you buy is to activate these particles in a particular pattern.
Big government has stepped in and said 'only these people are allowed to create patterns' and enforced it in hardware.

We are still compiling a list of what ships will be converted over to the new system and what will be left as unique ships. We will let you know more once we have had time to finish thinking about it.

As soon as you get out of the ship it reverts to its original design. So if you get out and put it in an SMA or trade it then whoever gets in it next will have the original SKIN or the one they have selected that they own for that ship.
