While this tech is indeed very exciting it is about Augmented Reality more than Virtual Reality (full immersion).
I'm still a bit sceptical about the tech, but very excited about the possibilities!
While we had heard rumours this was news to us as well.

The tech is designed toward augmented reality, but it seems to me that with a few tweaks, (knowing nothing of its limitations or plans) it could support blackout conditions - put a hood over your head, rely on a Kinect sensor for user positional data, and presto! - Full immersion ;) |

A lot of this tech relies on "inside out" sensors scanning the world around you :) Based on what I've seen the device is 3d mapping the environment around you in real time, and using that to pin the augmented "holograms". So.. a hood would not work ;)

I think if it didn't detect the world, or you've activated a hypothetical software feature to enable this, it should be able to project a full image at a default distance in "space" that you could focus on. As presented, I think the device potentially offers MORE capability than the Rift. (If paired with an external sensor like Kinect. Which may not be in their plans.) |

That is not their plan no. The whole idea behind this is it being standalone and "untethered" (wireless)

From what I have seen with Hololens is that it requires a 3 dimensional space to work with; it won't be able to project an image onto the inside of a hood as it would be too close for it to focus at (and it being made of cloth, tends to move). Its designed to augment what we see around us with extra information, rather than completely replacing it.
Pairing up the Hololens with a Kinect system would be a bit pointless - it is from appearance designed to be mobile and used outside the home, and Microsoft aren't going to stick a Kinect sensor every 30 feet or so...
Blessed are those that carry the Empress' Light; with it they destroy the shadows

What I am thinking, is, all the elements are there and they could "dumb it down." A cloth hood is a jokey kind of hypothetical. If they wanted to design for a Rift-like experience, it could include a face-hugging blackout shield accessory, that does not block other needed sensors.
I have read here in this excellent lengthy article about all things Microsoft, that it includes a forward-looking Kinect-technology depth camera with 120 degrees field of view, so it can dynamically map images to your environment. Midway down they describe how it creates the image on the lenses, and it is much more complex than projecting onto angled glass that you also look through, like in heads-up displays.
Sigh. This thing is going to be expensive. |

I've seen the TV ads for Windows Holowhatsit. It will not live up to the hype. |

Frankly there should be no hype, it's a wearable touch-screen computer monitor, and looks as ridiculous as it sounds. Practically speaking I realize that this isn't quite accurate, but that may as well be what it is. The fact they are even allowed to get away with calling it holographic is laughable. |
