I have a few questions for you null sec explorers out there. My explorer character (personal corp) has been practicing scanning / hacking in high sec and some low sec and is ready to take the plunge into null sec exploration. He is flying this:
[Helios, Explore] Warp Core Stabilizer I Nanofiber Internal Structure II Nanofiber Internal Structure II
Upgraded 1MN Microwarpdrive I Cargo Scanner I Scan Rangefinding Array I Data Analyzer I Relic Analyzer I
Covert Ops Cloaking Device II Core Probe Launcher I, Sisters Core Scanner Probe
Small Hyperspatial Velocity Optimizer I Small Gravity Capacitor Upgrade I
Sisters Core Scanner Probe x8
At 25m replacement cost I am not worried about risk to ship loss. But I am worried about "time loss". So the less often I have to be dodging people hunting me the better so I can concentrate on scanning and hacking.
But I have spent hours pouring over the star map and dotlan looking for the type of null sec to explore. This is what I am finding:
- NPC null is not as large as I was hoping. Pretty small clusters with a lot of dead end systems and pipe systems. Not to mention 4-5 jump through per hour by other characters. Which would equate to constant interruption. - Soverign null space seems very busy as well. Each time I research the owners I come away with a feeling that they are pretty good at hunting down any neuts in their control. I have another character that is in a corp that rents 3 null sec systems and I know their intel is great and explorer neuts are tracked and either run out or killed. They never have time to scan and hack. Looking at dotlan for explore ships killed in different parts of sovereign space seems to show this as common.
So where is this "vast, quiet and empty" null space I hear about? I don't mind occasionally handing a run-in with someone. But when the rule is "never hack with someone in the system" then it is a tad difficult when as soon as anyone sees you in local they don't leave... they just bring in more people.
I have also tried C1-C2 workhole space but every one I jump into is very well occupied.
Any suggestions are welcome! |

It depends on where you go in null sec.
The further away you are from a trade hub like Jita, the quieter it'll be. But don't let that fool you.
If you are seen and reported, and there's no way you will know if you are reported, expect one or two pilots to come looking for you.
Check the eve map for pilots recently killed and look for a place in null that is either empty or is highlighted only slightly.
News sources like evenews24.com and themittani.com can let you know of where to steer clear of.
Your fit looks good, but you may have trouble with the harder hacks on cans, some of them can have a resist of 90.
You can still hack a site with others in system, just be aware of them warping in on top of you whilst you hack a can.
D-Scan is your best friend in null sec!!
Good luck. |

Good luck.
and the mwd cloak trick, learn that, your fit might benefit with a sister prob launcher, pricey but does help you scan faster

I used high sec wormholes to get to nullsec, and never had any real issues. I would load up a couple hundred million worth of stuff (which was incredibly quickly done in places like Catch) and then I would just wormhole it back. Either through the chain I came in, or just finding a new chain. You can also make the run from null to high. Especially if you wait until just after downtime.
Anyway, most alliances are actually terrible at hunting you down. The bulk of the people safe up, and the handful that actually do bother coming out looking for you are not going to cause any real problems. Unless you attack someone, or you are going back and forth between systems, they wont bother camping gates or anything. The worst I ever had to deal with was with Afterlife, and that was due to a guy in a Sabre trying to catch me in a site. 5 months, no ships lost. |

I liked catch, because they are (or at least were) perma camped, and very afraid of being hotdropped. So basically no one ever came after you. On top of that, you could chain hit Relic sites for 50mil+ a piece due to all of the armor plates. |

I did my runs through the SS side of Catch, since it was a quick shot to and from high sec, but yes. |

the reason why all those wormholes were occupied is most likely because you're scanning for them in high sec.
Start finding entrances in low sec and I'll guarantee before long you'll end up in a hole with tons of untouched sites. |

i tried to do the wh-0.0 chain. it just takes to much time to find a 0.0 exit. just look at your pilots in system last 30 min.. if its none try your luck at a 0.0 choke point. most of the time you are fine. especially after downtime. most of the gate campers are also not that skilled so its easy to escape even if they bubble you. you need quite quick reaction to decloack a covops frig.
one more thing once in 0.0 people are shitting themselves if a neutral shows up in local and dock up. was running sites in a outpost system the whole day. nobody even tried to scann me down. tbh.. its just not fun to hunt a covops. just needs to much of an effort for a lousy kill mail:)

On local traffic, carebearium has a filter for seclusion, so you can sort systems by jumps per hour.
The low end of sov nullsec is more deserted then the built up -1 areas and NPC. Just look for areas on the border of lowsec and null sec. Tribute into Venal is the deadest area I've roamed around, CO2/TNT territory. The low to null systems are patrolled, and they have bubbles set up on gate to gate warp lanes 24/7, but it's easy to bypass. There's really nothing they can do if you try.
When a gate camp traps you in a warp disruption bubble. After you hit the cov-ops cloak they'll try and break the cloak with proximity. If you maximize your relative angular velocity, in the usual way, you really lower the probability of them breaking the cloak.
You might also think about using an interceptor instead of a helios. Personally I'd keep the cargo space.
I've found Thera is a good starting spot to get into null via wormholes, but the highsec entrance holes are frequently camped hard. Look for a null/low entrance on evescout.
Let's see, working in tribute with a Stratios I made about 750mil over a week. That included time spent setting up gate over watches, safe spots, and just logging off when pestered. There's a loop around J-GAMP (I think) that was pretty profitable. |
