Hi there,
I've been playing EVE for over 7 years now and have loved every moment, the good and the bad. However, over the past 6 months I've become increasingly bored of the game. Nothing seems to excite me any more and I really have tried every avenue and scenario I can think of to rekindle my interest.
I'm considering mothballing my high sp accounts and characters and starting over, to see if I can get that 'new player' feeling again and maybe re-ignite my interest in the game.
I was wondering if anyone else had done this, and what your experiences were. Good, or bad? |

I had a kind of forced restart.
Left the game for a while when I moved overseas and din't have the time to play. When I moved back I couldn't (and still can't) remember my old accounts, credit card details, email address. Nothing.
So I just rolled Scipio and started again. Wouldn't change it for anything. Have had a blast the last year and a half.

It really depends how desperate you are to train all the fitting skills again. A better option if you are bored is to set a few months of skills going and do something else until the EVE bug returns.

When I get bored, I stop playing. Luckily I'm able to continue to fund my accounts, but I just log in slightly for an evening or so. Then, one day, I get the urge to come back big time :) |

Odd you should bring this up, OP. I've been playing the same amount of time, and all this week I've been thinking the same thing. I attribute it to the fact that the playerbase has changed as CCP has puckered-up to certain kinds of people, and blown off others, who have left. (Read my sig.) This is all about who you play with, no?
Play to the lowest common denominator you may get paid, but something else comes along with it. When folks like us go, we take our credit cards with us. How long can CCP survive on in-game generated PLEX? I asked an economist that, and he choked on his Cheerios.
C'est la vie. C'est la guerre. C'est la achat.
PS Oh yes, and...when I go I'm going to put this toon on the market, consolidate all my holdings to ISK then send it to a noob I find on rookie chat. Should amount to a few billion.
Anyone with any sense has already left town.

I've done this a few times and while it kept me in game for a month or two more, it also added more accounts to my play style. I'd leave anyway because it was just time but when I came back I'd load all accounts up.
If you really are feeling burn out, you might be better off just playing something else. We are for the most part, all MMO gamers here so 'taking a break' from EVE means just that. Finding something else and it's not always negative to EVE. I am in the process of doing it right now and in my "other" game I immediately saw that one great thing in EVE that I find in no other MMO.
You want to craft and you see that it's a layered affair, lots of skills sets, lots of recipes. That's true in EVE too but in EVE I never need to deal with one thing. here do I put all the damn junk! I'm sure you will see those redeeming qualities that are more to you but they are there. |

yeah I get bored and take breaks mostly because of the society that has changed over the years. Im a 05 and have also done many things. The math and science of industry with the occasional blasting of npc I do from time to time, I have found my first option rather limited. I keep training my skills and all but that's about it

What I did. Hence FC 3 and all other leadership skills are maxed... I would have been bored out of my mind waiting for all that when active =) I blame "This is Eve" for being here again ... |

I found that to break myself out of the rut I kept getting in, I needed to sell my main just to get a fresh perspective. Otherwise I kept trying to do the same things that were boring the life out of me. I'm not sure why.

One of the biggest barriers to older players joining in new player activities used to be clone upgrade costs, but since those have been removed there's nothing stopping people using their high SP alts in rookie organisations. You could join RVB, E-Uni, Brave, CVA or Spectre Fleet with your old alts and just explain that you are trying something new. It's sometimes obvious when new players re-roll and start again anyway, especially if they are condescending to actual rookies and can't really abandon the vet mentality.
Having said that I've re-rolled a few times and despite having significantly less SP my later alts are much more focused. The unlimited skillqueue is awesome for tearing through the early core skills. If you can afford to set one of these up as a side project it's worth doing during the Power of Two offer. If you are fairly attached to your original characters I would be very careful about selling them. 20-40 billion sounds like a lot, but it's not that much, especially if you regret selling your main later and can't get it back. One thing that seems to detach people even faster from the game is when they sell their main, regret it, then engage in a rebuying cycle - they seem to lose their sense of identity along the way. Although it's not true for everyone, as some of the earlier posters have remarked.
It sounds like you need to have a think about whether you want to try some new avenues solo (which is fairly easy, just make a list of things you haven't done - try this) or find a new group to play with. If you want to get a feel for what new players are doing, start monitoring reddit. Their enthusiasm is fairly infectious, and unlike most of the player run forums it has a definite rookie friendly tone.

Give a noob some ISK, and he will simply play for a week until he loses the faction fit mining battleship he bought with it to a gang in lowsec and then quits.
Convert the ISK into packs of core fitting skill books, fitted ships with all the skillbooks to fly them, maybe some implants, a wee bit of ISK to play with (20mil each), and watch a whole herd of noobs go out and create content and learn to love the game. .
Since the cessation of their usefulness is imminent, may I appropriate your belongings?

If you sell your high-SP characters to start over, and end up with few dozen billion ISK, you will have no need to put effort into any activity.
When you start a new character, it can't fly the ships you're used to, and it doesn't have access to ancillary stuff like the ability to transport your junk around, jump clones, reprocessing or trading skills, etc. But you still know all the ins and outs of the game, so a big part of the newbie experience is missing.
So my recommendation is keep your current characters. Just park them in training queues or interrupt the subscription for a bit, if you feel like starting anew.

I have done that. I put my main on mothballs and start a new guy with a different "personality" as it were. However after a few months I start missing my old guy and go back.
I now simply stop playing altogether for awhile.

I was wondering if anyone else had done this, and what your experiences were. Good, or bad? Why reroll? Simply refuse to fly anything larger than a frig or desty and have at it. I started a new account about a year ago, figured I'd let the existing ones lapse and just play in it. That lasted all of a week before I got frustrated with not being able to fly/fit t2, and ended up reactivating my other accounts.
EvE is hard. It's harder if you're stupid.

I recently did the tutorial again. I sometimes feel I have to as punishment for a rather obvious mistake. In this case going after a random frig in a totally untanked travel interceptor. Web, scram, talk to you later Yarda. Even lost my pod. But if anyone asks; I was speedtanking.
As for the tutorial:
Aura: "approach your target"
Yarda: "What?" "Approach?" "Do you know what happens when you approach a turret ship?"
DO YOU?
I finished it, including all the career agents in 500K SP character, injecting skillbooks and training up etc. Wasn't the same. Never has been.
Starting over wont get you back that feeling of being totally out of your depth. Which I actually miss sometimes. |
