My scandalous and almost-seriousish suggestion is that almost all ships in eve are visually extremely phallic, with Throax being just the worst of the bunch. I can imagine that the visual design of internet spaceships does not appeal to women the same way it appeals to us men who get awfully excited about collecting bigger and bigger and shinier and shinier phalluses. |

Eve doesn't give a damn about your gender so why should I? I care in the sense that we are probably missing out on a lot of good players because EVE, for whatever reason, does not seem to appeal to even the large number of women who enjoy science fiction.
I suspect that this lack of appeal is mostly because of eve's visual style or lack thereof, instead of any game mechanics.
It's not that we'd need to make EVE appeal to your stereotypical highschool girl, no. The problem is that even the women who are enthusiastic fangirls of Asimov, Star Trek, Frank Herbert, Sci-Fi TTRPG:s etc. go "meh" and move on when they see EVE. We fail to reach even the core demographic of science fiction geeks. |

How you look when you're done? Really. You don't want that. Don't you think it's a bit ironic to generalise all men as prejudiced? This thread is really fun when you play "spot the feminist". To be honest, the posts by Celestia and Legetus were quite pointless stereotyping and unlikely to reflect any real reasons why women are so underrepresented in EVE. Women do not seem to find EVE attractive even in the cultures were gender roles about violent and competitive masculinity and nurturing femininity are not as strongly taught to children as they are in Anglo-American and Mediterranean cultures, so those are insufficient to explain the lack of female players.
I live in a culture that has very flexible gender roles and A LOT of female gamers and female sci-fi nerds, but very few women play EVE even in here. |

I'm saying that these things are true in aggregate, statistically speaking, because of our biology. I am unaware of any relevant scientific evidence that points towards these particular traits being significant parts of our sexual dimorphism.
Some bias might be found, sure, since excessive amounts of testosterone really does lead to aggressive and violent behiaviour for example, but any genetic effect is definitely so small it vanishes under the MASSIVE impact culture has on our behiaviour. The way men and women behave is quite different in between Italy and Scandinavia for example with italy having a very classic Macho culture and Scandinavia being traditionally more egalitarian. There is definitely not enough genetic difference between northern and southern europe to explain the difference, but plenty of cultural differences. |

Celestia Via wrote:What do you think the reasons are for EVE being overrun with males? EVE's ships and visuals are basically just huge phallic symbols. I like collecting big dongs. They make me feel like I have a big dong too.
I suspect women don't get that appeal. |

Celestia Via wrote:I believe CCP artists have taken great pain in achieving the opposite This is the part where I disagree. EVE is a very visually bland game, especially in the core game play of purple boxes, red boxes and red crosses that we spend most of our time interacting with. Walking in stations and modernized ship designs might help some, maybe. |

Serene Repose wrote:Yeah. AND, I think we're underplaying the notion that corporate endorsement of sociopathic behavior tends to appeal to sociopaths. We're actually invaded by some pretty imbalanced people at this point.
I don't think I have ever met or heard of an EVE player who has been officially diagnosed as a sociopath.
Sociopath is a BIG word. Don't use it lightly. |

Or, provide examples of male groups that have achieved enlightment. One solid example will do. The majority of scientific research groups are all-male sausage fests and they manage to do research just fine without having to wrestle or measure dicks to figure out whose results are the best. |

Why do so many people here think of "EVE Players" as some sort of monolithic and uniform culture?
Players of different ages have different cultures within EVE. Players of different nationalities have different cultures within EVE. Players of different play styles have different cultures within eve. Players of different alliances have different cultures within EVE. Players of different corporations have different cultures within EVE.
Many of these internal cultures of EVE I enjoy, many I do not enjoy and some I loathe. None of them give any reason to speak of a dominant culture that all players share.
There is no "this is how we EVE players are" in a game this vast. |

The world isn't a pretty place, its not sunshine and rainbows. The world is exactly as pretty as we make it.
Luckily, most people are pretty good at filling the world with sunshine and rainbows. Its a beautiful place indeed. |

Frostys Virpio wrote:Primary This Rifter wrote: He's not joking. And it's a good thing, of course. But notice how GSF did it without losing its overall cultural identity. A lot of what you people are suggesting is the reason EVE isn't popular with women is the same **** that we're known for, and yet we've got quite a few female players.
That's because any issue pushing women away from EVE are more likely to be out of game than in game with GSF being a example of that. The game didn't have to change one bit for them to implement some sort of moderation on their comms/boards and I'd guess the male to female ratio grew closer to other game's "standard" of population ratio. Yeah, GSF is a good example that all it takes to improve your culture is a single mute or kick command or a single press of F1.
Not so strangely, the majority of female EVE players who do not hide their gender that I know of are Goons. |
