Hello, I have one simple question.. Is dropping cargo containers at a gate camp in order to decloak cloaky outgoing ships an exploit or not? Amount of containers, 50-200 per say.. If so, is it punishable or will the containers just be removed? Judging by what this GM said, it is completely legal but I just want to make sure: http://www.eve-search.com/thread/1555366-0/page/1#6
P.S. Do not answer if you are not 100% sure, preferably awaiting answer from DEV, CCP, or GM.
Thank you! |

CCP frowns on anything that massively affects server load. I suspect ejecting 200 cans falls in that category.

It's only an exploit if the intent is to cause lag.
So my condolences on whatever it was that you lost. Now you know another trick that you have to avoid. A good way to avoid landing in bubbles full of cargo cans is to prepare ahead of time with many (many) "perch" bookmarks. These should be far away but still on-grid. Typically 250-300km will still be on-grid with a star gate.
If you have the time, set up perches like this around every celestial in a system: planets, gates, stars, POCOs, outposts, etc.
I don't know of any convenient way to avoid being decloaked (or being cloak-denied) by cans 15km from the gate where you'll be arriving when jumping through. Having eyes on the other side of the gate and convenient access to a covert ops jump bridge is all that comes to mind.
edit: you are very unlikely to get a response from a GM or Dev, seeing as you referenced a GM post and are still questioning the ruling.

CCP also frowns on tactics specifically designed to disrupt other player's clients. Thus the reference to GMs all running the same kind of hardware when checking reports of can-spam.
But you are right that OP should in the first instance request a GM ruling through a ticket. 50 cans isn't going to be an issue, I can see that 200 would be pushing the envelope.

Submit a ticket. It has been in use as long as I have played.

This is a "grey area" issue so GMs won't be very consistent with it.
In my experience... as long at the cans do not cause lag issues it is legal. Generally speaking, cans won't start causing lag until after 25 to 50 have been littered about. Any more than that and you might run afoul of the "don't cause lag rule."
USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT.
Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

PSA: the word "lag" cannot be used to describe graphical performance as it is impossible to force your machine to draw graphics in a delayed mode.
As for the cans, you will learn the rough limit after the first time they erase them, I've found that littering space with less than 20 cans has never caused any issues and that is usually enough to cover all warpins from planets and gates + the moons from the nearby planet. |

We do this in our gate camps.. Well we did when we did them. But we restricted it to 1 can per person and about 10 cans total. When other FC have spammed it a bit, we have been told off.
Also spamming bubbles is considered not nice. If you see it, report it and it gets cleared at DT.
None of these things are considered serious by GMs. You just get a "don't do that dude... its not cool, we could get you in trouble" sort of warning.
Death and Glory!
Well fun is also good.

Comes to a COMMUNITY forum to ask for official answer.
When it has been said at least 5000 times that if you want official answer from a GM, use a petition.

I dont understand where you get the idea that spamming bubbles is "not nice." Null dwellers will frequently completely bubble gates as well as set up drags off of them, which is perfectly legit although annoying. GMs wont, in general, get involved which is perfectly fine - since you can kill the bubbles if you want.
As for spiking a gate with debris - that is also perfectly legit, as long as you dont do so much that you cause lag. How much causes lag is a fuzzy issue and will vary from gm to gm. My understanding is that it is about 100 drones, or other items. I have seen other folk spread substantially more then that around a gate but they were all cleared up after a while - now whether that was by other players or gms I dont know.
I don't play, I just fourm warrior.

Personally, if I thought it was excessive (200 seems so), I'd petition for them to be removed.
I have managed to get stuff removed, but it really depends on the judgment of the GM. |
