I've been enjoying running missions and the occasional PVP with my little 'rox. A while back I went head to head w/ another Ferox who was set up more for ratting and I for pirating/PVP. I had things like a warp disruptor, stabilizer where he had some extra hardeners, etc...
So I thought I'd just get some nice rail guns and boost my max range to around 55km, which I did. The problem is, my DPS is sooooo much less than with missiles, it doesn't really feel worth it. Last night I came accross a little Kestrel ratting and by the time I got a couple of shots off he was able to warp out before I could get w/i 20km range for warp disrupt. I'm 100% confident that five heavy missiles would have toasted him instantly.
Input / advice appreciated. I'm moving back to missiles in the meantime.

With GOOD gunnery skills you can put 200mm's on a ferox, use AM or thorium ammo, and have a pretty good gunship with a decent tank. Most pilots use missiles, because, as we all know, missiles are about 3x as effective skillpoint for skillpoint. You do reach a point where turrets climb ahead, but its a pretty big skillpoint gap. __________________________________ Vale Heavy Industries "We'll Haul Your Stuff For Free"(Because you didnt pay us not to.)

2006.10.04 04:25:34 Combat Your 250mm Compressed Coil Gun I perfectly strikes Serpentis Guard, wrecking for 214.8 damage. <- w/ n00b skills :D
I use 5x heavy missile launchers, 1x 250mm rail, and 1x small tractor beam :D The railgun is awesome! I am thinking of switching to rails in a bit, but I am going mostly into missiles right now so it probably will not happen soon.

I do 65 to 250 damage per shot about every 5 sec per gun 4 or five guns. so I can do double the damage of a missile rox.
The catch is I use tech 2 guns and 2 T2 damage mods and have good allround gunery skills.
So yes a gunboat is better than the missile boat but only after you have the skills to make it work.

I find a blasterrox to be a lot more fun, it's like a mini-blasterthron. :) As a bonus, you don't have to move as far to pick up the cans after a kill with blasters. Just remember to use "Keep at Range" instead of Orbit when fighting ships with a high transversal, and a web is pretty much imperative as well.
I tend to orbit bigger ships to help mitigate the damage I'm taking in and use keep at range smaller ships since their damage tends to be laughable and I can't hit them worth a damn when we're both trying to orbit each other. Drones 5 with a swarm of light drones is pretty handy for the smaller ships as well.

You're using weapon with a long range, on a ship with gives a bonus to weapon range; then you are upset that when you are at a close range and your weapon doesn't work?
Remember one thing, Ferox also gives a bonus to Blaster range.

Edited by: Praxor on 04/10/2006 14:23:00 Yes, I shouldn't have said "sucks." But the DPS differential between 5 x heavy missile launchers and 5 x 250mm rails was tremendous. The extra 20km in range is really not worth it for me at this point it seems.
Granted, I have slightly more skills in missiles, but even if I ramp up my med turret skill to the same, I think it will still be the case.
I wonder if a 4 x heavy launcher and 3 x 250mm rails would work or something like that? My hope was to "grind down" other cruisers from 50km+ (assuming the other guy is a missile boat). Then move in for the kill.

The problem with that is that if while you're grinding them down, unless you have a tackler partner with you, there is nothing stopping them from warping off on you.

Not sure if this would work, taking a guess so sorry if this all wrong:
How would this work?
5 û 200mm T2 (donÆt think you could fit 5 û 250s) 2 û rockets
2 x EW mods (not sure) 1 x Web 1 x Jammer AB T2
2 Armor Hardner armor 1 Repair (T2)
5 û light drones
This would be more of a support ship / patrol boat. Might be able to handle frigs and hope (prey) that it could hold off a BS till help arrived. Making it an armor tank (unorthodox for a ferox) would be both a surprise once they go thru your shields but more effective for PVP.
Maybe still use for ratting to?

No, I can fit 5 250s. I guess part of the problem is that I was hitting from max range with Iron charges. So the dmg was really low. I bet with Antimatter or something along those lines (w/ 20km optimal range) my DPS would go up quite a bit.

electronic warfare - weapon jammers, target painters - still new not sur if those are mids or lows or both - think they are mids.
also, without large shield extenders, it would reduce your sig (and with AB II you could get speeds of up to 400, again, not sure if any of this matter)

What did you expect?
Missiles are the more versatile and steadier weapons.
Due to the skill differences 250mm rails with uranium and skills at lvl5 do about the same hp damage like heavy missiles. And that gives a range of 40km (including ship bonus at lvl5).
Turrets are the better weapons if you can create ideal conditions to max their damage by using long range or with webifiers.
Otherwise missiles are always better because they do insane damage at range (compared to ranged turret ammo) and don¦t depend on tracking.

Well, I thought I'd get some massive range boost (eg., 55km) which I did ... along with so-so damage. But what I found was that with the extra 20km of range (Iron + 250mm) my damage went way below so-so to downright lame. It took me 10x longer to kill rats and mission NPCs. Sure, I could do so w/o a scratch from 55km ... but it just took too darn long. Also, when up against fast frigs that extra time hurts.
Anyhow, it was an interesting experiment that I'm sure I'll repeat as my gun skills improve. I was just surprised at how poorly they behaved in my current setup / skill level.
I look forward to revisiting the issue with heavy rails on a BS.

Ehm a good Rail Ferox has almost double the dps than a Missile one.
I can instapop any ever Tech I frig with 5 250mm Rail II and antimatter.
Which ammo did you choose? If you are going for PvP just use Antimatter. Even with Antimatter you get 25km optimal or even more with 250s which is fairly enough for every PvP Situation. Take a couple of Spike Charges with you for sniping. Javelin Ammo is completly useless on the Ferox btw.
Anyway, the Ferox is a very bad Battlecruiser for solo PvP get at least an Inty or Assault Frig for tackling support. Every other BC is better for solo PvP than the Ferox.

Compomise and use tungsten or iridium if you want good range.
I get decent damage with 250 carbide rails and iridium ammo (+20% range) from 55km on down. ---------------------------------------------- "Violence is the last refuge of the incompetent." ---------------------------------------------- |

Ferox is also pretty good for gangs because its probably the easiest one to use gang modules on without gimping your setup.

What is your range with heavies? My range is only limited by my targeting distance at ~73k.

For PVE use antimatter and nothing else. The people(including me) who say the ferox rocks with guns use antimatter.

Anti-matter all the way...
In pvp, hitting with Iron is useless since the damage is too low to be noticeable and is outside the warp disruptor range.
With 250mm and basic skills, you can reach up to 30-35 km counting falloff.
Plenty to deal the scrambling zone and enjoy better damage.
