Hello all!
I would like to get my alt to produce some iks "on the side". I will spend 20$ to allow him to train at the same time as my main...
Whould it be better to make him a amnufacturer, a scientist or a station trader to help with my isk generation?
I am looking for a trade that does not require a lot of "live" time...

A station trader is probably a good option, since having someone set up to haul, sell and buy things for you will be useful if you ever find yourself in a situation where you have trouble travelling in highsec because of wars, security status or faction standings. A month of training should be easily enough to get you the necessary trading skills and some skills towards a transport ship.
In addition to dedicated market alts, a lot of people train off-corp scouts and ganker alts. I find covert ops scouts extremely useful, since I live in a wormhole.
Training skills for Planetary Interaction for several characters is a popular way to make idle ISK if you have access to 0% tax customs offices, but personally I find it too much of a chore to manage. |

Your profit will depend on effort; other than getting lucky stealing or suicide ganking a big score, you're not going to make a lot of money with a character that doesn't log in much. The game is designed this way; they're giving you skillpoints (the equivalent of xp) for free whether you log in or not, they're not going to give you the ISK too.
In fact, converting that $20 to a PLEX and selling it for 800 million ISK will get you more ISK than you can probably make in several months with a new (alt) character. |

Losec Pi is the exception but it is rather droll and boring stuff and a bit of a clickfest.

If you're going the multi-character training route to train an alt on account I agree that getting a station trader up and running is the best use.
Manufacturing, research and development, and T2 invention would require a lot more training and an actual alt account would probably be better for that, since subscription time is much cheaper than the $20 for MCT. Once trained-up if you'd not want to continue the alt account you could do a character transfer (a $20 fee if I recall correctly), so you'd want to calculate the amount of account subscription savings to offset the transfer fee. For example, if you subbed using the current "deal" for 3 months, you'd save $21.00 (cost breaks down to $12.95 per month so you save $7 per month against having to pay the $20 per month for the MCT) and you at least break even if you did transfer.

look at research and manufacturing and do the both , will take some time to do I can on me others now have 10 slots so I done wads of mining to buy ores and quite a few plex the plex is better than mining but mining if limited on funds .
then you can make bpcs and manufacture opens the game up and gives you plenty more choice can also research the bpos and sell them , all these don't take up much time ,then you have the time to go murder a few players.
there are some good guides out there that point you in the right direction |

Ditto on station trading first, I've been reading on numerous posts (points at signature) about indy tips. After a while, station traders get a 'feel' of what items are profitable and what aren't. (Note that good station traders spread out their items).
A common tip among them: after a while, they look for manufacturers to sell bulk of the items they want, or start manufacturing themselves.
Eve's market is very dynamic, theres seasons, patch day speculations, manipulation, bubbles, blockades, etc.

Station trading is by far the easiest to get into with low skills, which is perfect for an alt character which you may or not continue training. I recently made a station trading alt turned 4 million into 4 billion in three months, just checking orders a few times a day. Don't get discouraged if your profits are a bit slow at first. There's some finesse to it and you'll get better as you learn the tricks of the trade.

Not only that, but using that alt to buy and sell the ships and goods you need is very handy. Need to buy a ship + fittings? Buy it on the alt, contract to main (or even haul it to location and then contract). Need to sell lot or redundant gear? Use alt to sell it. Having an alt like that with cloaky hauler (either T1 with cloak/mwd or actually a BR) is very handy. |

Well, with all 3 options (and actually, pretty much all options you can think about), the more time you put into it, the more you get out of it.
A trader that only updates his orders once a week, will make much lower profits then someone who updates them 10 times a day.
A manufacturer that only updates his industry jobs every 3 days is wasting "production time" over someone who maximizes their time.
Yes, all 3 you listed can be used for a "semi passive" ISK generation system. Which is best, it also depends on your interest a bit, but when you know how the market works, like to be a market-warrior, then I would say (station-)trader would top it, EVENTUALLY.
With traders, it takes money, to make money. So when your trader has little capital, don't expect huge profits straight away. Give your trader time to grow, both in actually wealth, but also into the market (you can't just expect to control a market on day 1).
