Hi,
I just heard in an ingame channel that certain race ships does better in certain parts of space. Is this correct? Does it mean that Gallente Ships would be more effective doing missions for a Gallente Faction NPC? |

Yes and no.
Let us start with the basics.
There are 4 damage types in the game: EM, Thermal, Kinetic, and Explosive.
Nearly all ships in the game are geared towards using certain types of weapons... which in turn deal between 1 to 3 types of damage at any given time.
For example: The Atron, a Gallente Frigate, is bonused towards using Hybrid weapons... which deal Thermal and Kinetic type damage. The Punisher, an Amarr Frigate, is bonused towards using Laser weapons... which deal EM and Thermal type damage.
Now... this is where it gets interesting...
Certain NPC factions inhabit certain parts of space. Each NPC faction (and their offshoots) tend to be weak against certain damage types.
For example: NPC Gallente ships deal AND are weak against Thermal and Kinetic type damage. This also applies to the Serpentis faction (a pirate "offshoot" of the Gallente).
To answer your question directly...
You can use any ship you want in any area of space without penalty or restriction. But, certain ships will perform better in certain areas of space because they can deal the damage types the local NPCs are weakest against.
This does NOT mean you should only use ____ faction's ships against ____ faction. Again, there are only 4 damage types... which means that it rather hard to find an NPC whose weakness you have no answer for.
Two things that I should strongly point out though;
- this ONLY applies to "normal" NPCs. With certain "special" NPCs (like Wormhole Sleepers, Incursion Sansha, and Drifters) they do not have a damage-type weakness.
- ignore any and all of the above in PvP. Player ships tend to be "omni-tanked" (see: they try to get all the resistances as high and even as possible). The reason for this is that you can never know what weapon a potential target/hostile might bring... so you must be prepared to tank any kind of damage-type.
Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

Cool, thanks for the answer. I think I understand it a little bit better now. So for clarity's sake, if I wanted to do missions in a Megathron it would probably be (slightly) better to run missions for a Gallente corp? Up to now I havent really had a problem because I was running missions in a Dominix, and for that I could always just switch drone types. |

Again, yes and no.
Missions will typically send you out against the local pirate faction but sometimes will change things up a bit (read the mission briefing!!!).
The Megathron will probably do very well in Gallente space... but it would also do equally well in Caldari space (as they and their local pirate factions have pretty much the same weakness).
On that note... let me post the various NPC factions and their damage profiles (primary and secondary).
Amarr, Blood Raiders, Sansha, Rogue Drones: EM and Thermal damage. Gallente, Serpentis, EoM, "generic mercenaries": Thermal and Kinetic damage. Caldari, Guristas, Mordu's Legion: Kinetic and Thermal Damage. Minmatar, Angels: Explosive and Kinetic.
I might be missing some... but you should get a clear picture here.
Thermal damage makes up either the primary or secondary weakness of almost all factions. Kinetic damage comes in second place as the most "optimal choice."
One way or another you should be able to punch through most NPCs of any faction... though you may have a hard time with "elite" NPCs of a faction you are not "optimal" for.
On those cases... keep your Dominix on standby. With the right setup it can be min/maxed for any faction (because of drones as you correctly pointed out).
Change isn't bad, but it isn't always good. Sometimes, the oldest and most simple of things can be the most elegant and effective.

Thank you! In my Dominix I didnt really worry about these kinds of things, I could just switch out drone types, but I really dont enjoy depending on Drones as my primary damage type so made the decision to train up for a Megathron (gunnery skills mostly). I will however keep the Dominix for certain missions as you suggest. |

Missions won't always send you against Serpentis, for example, they may send you against mercenaries, against Caldari Navy, rogue drones, etc. They have different resistance weaknesses. It's not the ship that you fly, but the weapons that you use (you could put artillery or lasers on the Megathron if you really wanted to).
And it's only "harder" rather than "impossible". If you like the Megathron, fly the Megathron. Just do slightly less damage but still win the mission. |

E-war also matters a little bit.
For example: Amarr and their pirates (esp. Blood Raiders) will use energy neutralizers and tracking disruptors. This may mean it is advantageous to use a Minmatar or Caldari ship against them (since projectiles and missiles don't require capacitor, and neither one is greatly affected by TD).
Gallente and Serpentis use sensor dampeners, which reduce your lock range. This would create a problem for any kind of sniper ship, however, it wouldn't bother your Megathron much because you're going to be engaging at very short ranges anyway.
Caldari/Gurista use ECM, which may give an advantage to drone users as your DPS is not interrupted when you're jammed.
I'm not sure but I'd like to think that the Minmatar/Angel rats using target painters helps to eliminate some of the advantage of using a HAC or T3 to run high-level missions, by making signature tanking harder.
TLDR: Use whatever you like. Acquire multiple mission ships and switch them around when you need a change. Or use a Rattlesnake for everything, just like everyone else. |

Drones do get boring...fast. For me at least. But I do keep a Domi in the garage.

All very good information so far, here iare a few links that will help. http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=missionreports https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Missions_guide
When starting out and your ISK is low drones ships or missile ships have some advantages over the others since it is easier and usually less expensive to select the proper damage type to shoot at your targets for each mission. But in reality you can run any mission with just about any race ship you want to use.

Don't forget to consider standings when you are picking a region to run missions in. You may be willing to run missions slightly slower to retain access to Jita for example. Running enough mission for Gallente will eventually make it difficult to travel in Caldari space (in anything slow at least). Depends on your goals but is something to think about.

This is not quite the whole truth. It is not running missions that gets you into standings problems it is running the faction missions. I ran missions in Gallente space for many years and still have barely positive standings towards the Caldari and therefore have no trouble moving around in Caldari space.
Every agent for every NPC will give you what is called a faction mission on occasion and that includes the story line missions. These faction mission have you fighting against the Amarr, Caldari, Gallente or Minmatar depending on which NPC you are running missions for. It is these faction missions that will get you into standing trouble and they can do so very quickly. To determine if a mission is a faction mission or not you need to read the mission brief very carefully and you can consult sites like this for further information. http://eve-survival.org/wikka.php?wakka=missionreports |

The Domi is a pretty versatile ship and can be use nearly equally well in many situations. Pretty much the only thing that will give you a lot of problems is if you are getting shot at by Angels or Minmatar faction as they do explosive damage and you have a huge explosive hole if you are armor tanking.
I understand you can passive shield tank the Domi and it does fairly well but you'd have to use different rigs which would likely mean either choosing one or the other (shield or armor tank) or having 2 Domis one set up each way.
Other than that as you have noticed the Domi can switch drones to change damage types also since it has no gun bonus you can switch guns to suit the local rats. Also with the drones they can still attack when you are ECM jammed and when you get tracking disrupted your drones and to me more importantly your sentry drones do not. Of course drones are not instant win as they can take aggro and cause lots of dps down time by having to constantly recall them.
Other than how great the Domi is if you were flying a hybrid turret based ship and could only do Kinetic and thermal damage you'd also do great in caldari space as most of the missions that I get there are guristas or serpentis.
Again like others have said you can do just fine killing sansha and blood raiders in caldari ships and also do fine in Amarr ships killing guristas or serpentis we are just talking ideal situations here so don't let this keep you from moving to where some friends are just because you don't have an ideal ship. Eve is not a min / max game like most others. It's often about doing more with less. |
