I dunno, maybe I'm the only one, maybe I'm part of a minority. Been flying Gallente for years now (I have a freaggin tattoo) and honestly, after the PBR update dropped... I sort of bit my tongue. I waited, thinking maybe it'd grow on me, but it never did.
Even after Tiamat something about Gallente ships just looks off. The colors seem washed out and lifeless and the shaders are just too damn glossy for my tastes. It's like driving a really terribly colored sports car with one too many layers of wax coating.
I hate to say it but I really preferred the way the ships looked before PBR.
EDIT: As an addendum, I just want to say that the textures on the Hyperion are really starting to show their age as of late.

Could be worse, you could fly Caldari. The only Caldari ship that looks noticeably better after PBR is the Buzzard, at least that I've noticed. |

The issue of rust on Gallente ship skins (as well as the texture quality) was brought up repeatedly both before and after the release of PBR.....I've heard rumors the skins are being worked on though (although that's clearly hearsay), but they are in need of some serious work..... |

There are those who would disagree with you and the OP on this, I know many Gallente pilots that like the new looks. Personally I don't really care one way or the other the ships will be what CCP makes them so why worry about it. |

PBR is nice buy tends to bias towards glossy due to the problems or reproducing some effects with todays tech without overdoing the specular light :S

I too was hoping for a post about cheap beer... Maybe Quafe should release a new booster - Quafe PBR? Has no actual effect in game, costs a paltry 100,000 ISK but the description states, "Makes everything look better in the right lighting. Best served ice cold. Please be responsible, don't drink and fly."
On a semi-serious note, the only Gallente ship I have really looked at closely is the Kronos and I think it looks pretty good.

Back on-topic, I got a new laptop after PBR was released, and before that I was playing on bare minimum graphics settings. I think all the ships look pretty darned good, but I'm clearly biased.

The whole thing is a work in progress. CCP plans on slowly updating everything as they go. So Gal ships will probably lose most of the
"Pimpmobile' chrome look they have.
The Caldari should lose it's plastic look,
And so on and so forth.
Currently the Amarr ships I think are the best looking after PBR. And the Gnosis should be kept as is, just because it now make sense why it's so slow.
It's plated in ******* Gold man. XD

Right. CCP has a way of saying "WIP" when they really mean "We'll come back to it in five years when we need an excuse not to implement high level features"

By still "WIP" you mean they thought they were done and were telling all of us that were telling them half the ships looked terribad that we just didn't like change.
But then the masses finally got the notice to sink in a little bit that the whole system needed more work, and they acknowledged that it did. Kinda like a few other things they forced out that weren't finished yet, which of course still haven't been completed either. |

I sort of bit my tongue. I waited, thinking maybe it'd grow on me, but it never did. We're working on going through all the races, all the ships, to get to where we'd like to be in terms of their look, and to rework how we're delivering textures. This reworking is a project that we're referring to internally, and which was mentioned in the CSM minutes, as V5++.
This update did not make it into Tiamat, but the new Gallente look should be a significant improvement. Surfaces will be more varied, and the mirror-shininess will be toned way down. All the other races are getting the same attention.
This is not a speculative, hypothetical future improvement. This work is going on today, and is the focus of most of our art team.
Hope that helps.

Note that "low" shaders do not use PBR. If you set your shaders to "low" quality, you get a simple diffuse-only shader with the albedo map applied to it as a color map. After V5++, there may be some modest improvement in the look of "low" quality, but it will never be particularly visually attractive. The purpose of the "low" shader setting is to use the minimum resource load possible while allowing you to see the ship clearly.

Quoting CCP Huskarl, our art director, from December 5:
Quote:However there are some issues that we are fully aware of and are working hard to fix. The textures we are using were not made for PBR and it was a massive undertaking for the art team in a relatively short time to convert the textures and we will need to revisit a lot of them in the future. I-¦m aware of a lot of issues with some of the factions like for instance Sansha that was tweaked before we got the oil part of the PBR shader working properly. We plan to revisit all of them in the future and will look for feedback on the forums. I think you may be remembering my comment (made later in that same thread) that we did not feel that look issues were game-breaking or worthy of delaying the feature, but that's not the same as saying that further work wasn't needed.
What your energetic feedback in earlier PBR-related threads did do was ensure that we placed the highest priority on getting this work finished, so that we could make good on that promise promptly. This is why this work is our main focus today.

I would just to say that the Art team is doing amazing work with PBR. There are a few rough edges, but it seems those are in the process of being ironed out, and over all, the new updates are well worth it.

Would it be a safe assumption that this 'look' is similar to the solid, single, shiny look you have going for the incursus model? |

Cheers Darwin :) I had a conversation with corebloodbrothers about the PBR changes a while back and the effect on gallente skins etc. - I'm very happy to hear from you that this is a priority for the art team atm |
