Does this game encourage alts?
Is there some guy multiboxing a mini-fleet?

There are game mechanics that cater to alts. With the right number of alts in the right place doing the right thing, you can plex an account per hour. Everything after that is just padding the wallet of your main.
Alts are a Faustian feature. A deal between CCP and us. Alts are a pay to win feature that make the game worse, but without them CCP never would have had the capital to build the game into what it is today.

A. Cause some things are easier done with multiple characters (this can be your own alts OR friends). Cause some things do scale nice with alts (P.I. for instance). Cause some things NEED mulitple characters to be done (again, alts OR friends - for instance jump-drive travel).
B. Yes and no. Yes, there are things that kind of means you must have an alt (like for instance a capital ship + cyno alt for that needed cyno when you don't trust your friends or don't want to depend on your friends). No, you NEVER need an alt, you can perfectly play with just 1 character in the sandbox if you want that.
C. Plenty of Multi-boxers in EVE, though I guess that NYE the number went down now that command-broadcasting is deemed illegal (under same rule as botting).
D. Having multiple accounts CAN stress you out (Or not, it's something personal). If you mean, are people annoyed by others running more accounts, sure...but never ever listen to those people...your game, your money, your choice.

Alts are definitely a thing in eve. You can play eve without alts if you want, but you certainly handicap yourself if you do. For instance, you cant see outside of stations while docked, so why not keep a cloaked alt outside to tell you what's going on? You cant tell what is on the other side of that gate or wh that you want to jump your expensive ship through, so why not scout it in a disposable alt? Camping a gate or station can be boring, why not box another account making isk while waiting for something to happen? Then there are hauler alts, research/manufacture/mining alts, booster alts, cyno alts; the list is endless. Sure, like with most mmos, you can get friends/corpmates to fill the roles of your alts, but then you are beholden to the whims and timetables of others.
I don't play, I just fourm warrior.

Some reasons:
- travel across the map is somewhat cumbersome, so it's an advantage to have alts placed at the trade hubs or in empire space while your main is out in a nullsec war zone.
- you make enemies in this game and they won't stop shooting you when you "need a break" so it helps to have alts for shopping or to play a little bit more relaxed for a few weekends
- there are limits to how many industry slots any character can have, and how many market orders; more alts = more slots more profits
- posting crap or getting into a flame war on the forums may get you a lot of hate mail or harassment, better to do it with an alt (female, ok looking, to best appease the readers)
- some ships are designed to help others or function well only a group, but it's just easier to "find a group" at odd hours in the night or in a war zone or remote wormhole space, when they're all your alts |

Let's say I'm sitting in a belt mining for 10 million ISK an hour. Do that 20 hours a week, and I have my PLEX to let me play for free. Do that 30 hours a week, and I have my PLEX plus my 400 million ISK. AND, it is very non-attention intensive.
So, I create an alt. With 2 accounts, same 30 hours a week mining, I have 2 PLEX and 800 million ISK extra.
Then I realize my 2 toons are spending a lot of time warping to and from station to unload. So I start a 3rd toon just to haul for the 2 miners (51 days free with buddy invite yourself to game). But end up training that toon to be a miner also. So now I'm mining on 3 accounts, same 30 hours a week. Making enough to PLEX all 3 accounts and have 1.2B a month ISK left over.
So I start a 4th account (51 days free) to be a hauler, but instead of taking that one the mining route, I take it the booster route and put it in the belt boosting and hauling. Now I'm PLEXing all 4 accounts with 1.6B a month extra ISK, from the same 30 hours a week play time.
Then you're in null, and all those toons are not only mining, but also have alts on each account, so you have 12 toons doing PI, running manufacturing jobs, cranking out super capitals and inventing T2 ships, and running 1000 market buy and sell orders and....
Then you get burned out, unsub all your old accounts, and start a new trial account to remember how simple the game was when you had 1 toon on 1 account, and skills took 8 mins to train instead of 80 days. |

Many reasons: 1) Specialisation: PI, Trade, Pvp... You have practically 1 alt for every job 2) War avoidance: Still be able to earn ISK while being wardecd 3) Forum posting 4) Spying 5) Ganking
Lao Lazuli wrote: Does this game encourage alts?
A little bit since it takes ages to learn a skill it is always better to have an alt that is specialized in Industry while your main do other stuff.
Lao Lazuli wrote: Is there some guy multiboxing a mini-fleet?
Yes. There is a guy who multiboxes a lots of bombers and multiple guys who multiboxes a fleet of miners.

The game does not just encourage alts a little bit, it does it a lot. The power of two is directly promoting alts, and supers are pretty impossible without them, and capitols in general to a lesser extent.
For some of us its a way to play in our respected TZ with our friends with some flexibility. My main can fly dreads, and minmatar recons, my other account can fly cald HACs and HICs. Sometimes i just need cloaky eyes. Othertimes i am fully multiboxing. It permits our smaller corp to do what we could not do otherwise. Then there are always links. Links are pretty fantastic.
Oh sure there is the more friends things. And believe me we would prefer it. Multiboxing a carrier, dread and webs on a botched double escal spawn in a C5 is less fun than it sounds.
In fact that is my number one objection to people that complain about multiboxing. IT is far far less effective than the same number of real players. 2 ships are flown with a good multiboxer at about 80% effective and a normal boxer at something like 60%. 5 accounts is much less.
And i also totally reject the premise that it is pay to win. First of all please define win? win what? a carrot? 1B isk? a banana? Oh you mean someone blew up your internet space pixels and you have defined that as losing?
I know people that are strictly one account and love the game and don't care about multiboxers. I know one guy that is -10 and doesn't even have a 2nd character and is loving the game. He is also a dam good PvPer.
Death and Glory!
Well fun is also good.

I actually strongly dislike this part of the game. I wish I could do everything I wanted with just one account (and until very recently, I did). Unfortunately there are a lot of things that pretty much require multiple accounts. The main one for me is being -10 sec status but still living in highsec. It's just too tedious to not have a scout/hauler/scooper for ganks.
Examples: I need an alt on a second account to scan miners' fittings and get me a warp-in so I can get to them before faction police blaps me. (Concord only shows up after I shoot, but faction police follow me around wherever I go, so I can't stay in one grid for too long)
It's just not worthwhile trying to haul catalysts and modules in a -10 char, so that also has to be done with an alt.
Sometimes I like to participate in other activities in high sec than just ganking. Most of these are nigh-impossible to do with -10 sec status, so again I need an alt.
So currently I have 3 characters actively training across 2 accounts. One of them (my scout) will probably not require any more training once he can fly covert ops frigs and use combat probes effectively.

There is absolutely no need for alts. I would say that most of the things that people use alts for is most of the less fun things.
Alts are often used for: Lighting cynos when moving stuff around. Hauling ore for a mining toon scouting ahead. cloaky boosting recon. |

An alt is a really great thing for skilling.
If you have 1 avatar and you want it to be a miner + pve + pvp + industry + trader and all with perfect skills, it just gonna takes ages and by the time your main is trained to do that, you left EVE a long time ago by boredom or burn-out.
Why not skill 1 avatar for pve + pvp + scanning and another for mining + industry + trading or maybe 3 avatars (1 trader with perfect refining and building skills where you can contract your mined ore to with your 2nd avatar and in the meantime join some FW of incursions with your 3rd?). After a time you can dismantle 1 avatar (by the time your miner is skilled enough to a perfect trader and refiner for instance). It safes time, you make more isk with it, and have more time to play EVE then looking at an asteroid for ages..
If you want to play the game and have fun, decide what you want to do. But don't make it a jack of all trade (it can do everything but is not good at everything) I lost months of training to skills things i never use and need. |

How many friends do you have that would be willing to actively play a single account as just an off-grid booster for your PvP activities? Personally I wouldn't ask that of my friends.
A lot of activities in this game do encourage alts. It doesn't mean that they cannot be done without alts. Just that alts are far more convenient.

I can actually name a few.
Why, because I would do the same for them if needed (it helps if you can offer something in return when asked).
Hell, I had friends that dropped their gametime for that day, just to help me move my capitals around when needed. Which was about 1.5 - 2 hours work BEFORE the jump changes. Knowing that if they ever needed my help, I would be there for them.
If you haven't got people like that, they aren't friends.

I don't really form those kinds of relationships with people I only interact with online. Friendship is not binary to me, so I can consider someone a friend even if I wouldn't ask them to do boring crap for me. It's a game, and if I can't spend my playtime doing something fun, I'd rather play something else or go for a swim.

Then, presuming PvP, battle fit him and fly as a battle pair. Or set him up for hauling in an orca on grid as its almost as boring as mining.

Of course not. The alts have to be on separate accounts. The definition of "alts" that we use is "not my primary character", regardless of which account the alts are on.
CCP published some statistics in the past saying that the average number of accounts per player in this game is 2. That means a few people are running 3, 4, 15 accounts, and others are running just 1.
Personally, trying to control more than one character feels too much like work for me, so I tend to only play 1. But I do have a website posting alt (Hi). |

Spying and scouting are also part of EVE. The Local chat channel is really a game-breaking problem for anyone who is interested in covert operations "in character" on their main account. It tells your targets immediately when you are in the system stalking or scouting them, and no cloaking device or stealth tactic can escape it. For some people this is seen as a good part of the game -- no enemy can take you by surprise ever. But for those new players thinking of training up for a covert ops frigate, a recon cruiser, and someday a black ops battleship, this may come as a shocking disappointment: wherever you go, no matter how sneaky you are, the enemy will always know you're there. Wormholes are the exception, but they're also kind of a message from CCP: "you PVPer jerks, go to the PVP zone and leave the rest of us alone".
So if you want to spy or scout, you do so on a second character. He should have an average looking avatar, be in a legit-looking corp with a plausible but not flashy corp history, no obvious ties to your main character or corporation, name should start with a letter somewhere in the middle of the alphabet, boring bio with the NPC damage types or something no one will spend much time looking at. If alts break the roleplaying for you, you can pretend he's an agent who you've turned. Your main can transfer money for your alt via dead-letter box: you drop valuable blueprints or implants in an anchored cargo container somewhere, the alt picks them up, and you both have clean wallet histories. |

This is the first MMO (of many) that ive ever owned an ALT account with. They are invaluable in EVE IMO. Its so nice to have an account that can scout hot spots for you, or web you across a system camped with gankers or bumpers. Or even lets say you're mining, you can have Orca support with your alt, or somethig scanning down systems. Its really great in EVE, compared to other MMOs. |

But that's another topic! I agree with what's said before, your money your game. Alts aren't required but some players identities ingame require anonymous hauling and scanning alts. |

for PvP ,having a scout alt is invaluable.
Mine is frequently the fleet booster for the evenings roam , can combat scan, And is out of alliance so can be used to find Wartargets in space without spooking them. I always have it one or two jumps ahead of myself/the fleet following someone else alt who will be in a covops (also out of alliance) scouting further ahead.
What this means is I never have to jump a gate blind, I usually know what I'm engaging well before I choose to engage, I can land on them immediately (position alt 10k behind target away from gate, warp to alt at 10...."surprise mother******") And I can provide fleet boosts after I have moved the alt.
It also means I can carry extra ammo, paste and modules for myself or anyone that needs it.
It's also worth noting that with a second monitor it gets much easier to Operate two accounts at once.

Personally I do not think I will ever use an alt. First, I don't have the money for it. Second, to me, it loses the roleplaying aspect by having an alt and essentially would turn EVE into a job. Sure I can be more efficient, but if I am not having fun what's the point? And as J'Poll points out, most of the reasons to get an alt can be done on one account with friends. |
